I love your proud mama vibes. I used to live in Vancouver as well, and started a collective house with some friends there. We had a reasonably priced run down place with a landlord that footed the material bill (as long as we did the work), and it was SO MUCH FUN. The feeling of getting it just how you want it, and the pride in having done in yourself is the best! I also had really handy parents with tools and it was definitely the only way it was possible. I live in Montreal now, and am not able/don't need to do renovation projects at the same capacity, but making things and nesting is still my favourite! I love being on this journey, reminiscing, and living vicariously through you!

Love what you did with the closet! I feel you with the coathangers. I hate crammed hanging clothes! I was thinking, with the part of the closet where the pipe is; you could get a small chest or something to put in that corner for your mittens and hats and stuff; or to put away like big bulky sweaters and stuff in the summer to free up space on the shelves.

Ariel: talks about the price of what she's doing. WE LOVE A TRANSPARENT QUEEN. Thanks for being realistic and honest. I love artsy shots as much as the next person, but it's nice to have things balanced out with actual information about what goes into things like this. The big shelf.... I would use it for totes (lidded to keep out dust and labeled so you know what is in it) that you put out of season stuff in. During the winter, summer stuff (shorts, tank tops) would get put in there. Then during the summer, use the tote for your scarves, gloves/mittens and other winter stuff. That way you only have on your easily accessible shelves only what you would be using during that season.

I just hung things because that's the fittings the builder put in my closet. One quarter long things rod, one quarter shelves. And two quarters with double rods for shorter things. I would suggest on top of the coats, put in some woven baskets (more breathable and aesthetically pleasing than plastic tubs and you can thrift them often for pretty cheap) and have one for the board games, and another for the accessories you mentioned (I would put all the wintry stuff there like hats, gloves/mittens, and scarves). I also would recommend folding the cardigans instead of hanging them (protects the shoulders from becoming misshapen and also adds more space on the hanging rack). The pink flooring is really cute!

The only little suggestion I would make is to paint the screws (holding the brackets) white. Great closet remake! Only a cautionary comment -- whenever pulling up any lino and breaking it into pieces, you should wear a mask -- it might have asbestos in it. I'm renovating an 1867 farmhouse and the hallway, kitchen and pantry all had lino (with oak floors beneath) --we had it tested and it all had asbestos. The flooring in the pantry was not glued down so I took it up much as you did -- but wore a mask and gloves. We are having a company take up the rest as it is glued down. The cost for the amount being removed we felt was reasonable ($2000). I could have done it following parameters outlined in "how to" spaces but they will be in and do it all in one day so seemed a better use of time.
