Especially with gloves on too, you're almost always better off using bare hands because you might feel the danger before it's too late. Gloves can catch in pulleys and drill presses, etc. and then your whole hand follows it in.

No surprise he made it as far as he did! The best vehicle I've ever had in the snow was my '06 STI with Blizzaks. It was truly unstoppable and would just plow through snow. I've never even come close to driving anything else through 2.5 feet of snow like I did in that Scoob. The only reason I got stuck was because I backed in my driveway and it jacked up the rear end and sat it up on the underbody. Man, I miss that freakin car! 🤣

To be fair to Fred, any small truck with a decent amount of power and good tires is going to out-do a one-ton dually in the snow. Duallies are notoriously bad in the snow since you have four fat tires in the back trying to plow through the deep stuff. Plus Fred probably weighs twice as much as Hillbilly's truck so it wants to sink in rather than float on top. As to getting stuck: We always had two categories for this back in my off-roading days. You were either stuck or you were temporarily immobilized. Stuck is when you need to get outside assistance to get moving again. Temporarily immobilized is when you stop moving, but are able to get back on the trail without getting pulled out. You might have to dig or rock back and forth for a while but if you can get yourself out you're not stuck.

Much like where you live, I live in an area that typically gets quite a bit of snow every winter. Once the snow starts flyin, I lock in the hubs and leave them locked in until I know I won't need them. That way I don't have to get out and turn them in if I spin out. Just pull the lever and keep goin. Makes life much easier.

If it is getting dark and you are stuck and don't know what to do call 911 and tell them you are stuck and it is getting dark. Came pretty close to being pulley food. Since you weren't working the winch things could have gone badly for your right hand between your yell and Robbie's stopping the winch. That would have left a mark. Though KZbinrs joke about it, attention to safety needs to job one.

How come you don't use the recovery points on the front of that vehicle. Isn't there some type of device or the spare tire is that you screw into the front bumper for towing?

As a Colorado native who's been stuck many times in much deeper snow, here's my advice for the kids; A set of tire chains costs less than a single mountain recovery. A lowered car with wide tires is a poor snow vehicle. Don't travel alone. Bring friends who can get out and push.

Chains work fine on Subarus you just have to run smaller tires so you have clearance and if you saw the Forest Service sign then you should know that chains are required to be kept in the vehicle all the time.

Funny that you pointed that out. In 1999 Christmas Eve I saw someone who slid off road and stuck on highway going south from Bloomington IL. I turned around and offered to help him in my XJ, he didn't want to be pulled out because my vehicle had GA tags. It was my rock crawler lifted, lockers and setup. My response was Merry Christmas and I turned around in front of his stuck car drove through the snow in the ditch and left, heading back to hospital where my mother was.

But after watching this, If there is ever a time my old 2006 is trapped on a mountain by snow? I'll wait for the spring thaw or whatever; before I'd ask for him to do the rescue. Just Say'n.

My god, look at the vehicles they use for their recoveries. If that motley crew showed up with those junk vehicles, I’d make another call. It’s no wonder insurance companies don’t recommend them.
@DB-yj3qc

@@scottmichaels6854 The vehicles they are using are for non-standard recoveries. Robbie Layton's has rollback for regular recoveries the rollback wouldn't be the vehicle for this job unless it was to haul the wrecker to the snow line. That's a "off-road recovery" being the road is closed due to weather conditions.

No actually I’m going to keep doing exactly what I’m doing mainly because I can and it sure upsets you “professionals” 🤷‍♂️

My thoughts are Snow Skids that can be attached to the front wheels. Carry a low profile jack to lift the front end of the vehicle attach the skids under the wheels. Attach ropes to through the wheel spokes and pull it out from there. I would keep a snow shovel on the truck instead of a regular garden shovel. Put together a snow environment kit and mount it on top of Fred's cab. 'Ready to go for snow recoveries. '

Hopefully they learned a lesson on the limits of offroading WRXs in deep snow! I love Hillbilly's little Toy, but I wonder what he could really do with a full size Ford off road wrecker that he built himself!
