WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I can’t remember what it’s call but there’s a nerve in most animals that starts at the base of the brain goes and wraps around the heart and goes back up to the voice box. Now in most issues it’s not that much of an issue but when you look at say a giraffe the nerve it’s several metres long when it could easily be a coupe of inches and still do the same job, that doesn’t seek to be a very ‘intelligent’ design to me.

Then point out that the male elephant has their testicles located safely in their body cavity. The mouse has testicles that can be moved inside their body when they are not needed for reproduction.

Spermatozoa cannot survive at body temperature. It's absolutely NEEDED to reproduce but apparently not all that important to God. So the testicles have to be placed outside of the body using a complex system to keep them cool enough but not too cool except they are pretty much always too cool or too hot to function optimally. And then there is the placement, right in the place where they are likely to get constantly hammered.

"Random chance seems so slim" Think of sediment going through a sieve. You can have all kinds of small pieces of rocks and minerals going into the sieve but only the smallest grains will be sifted out. The rocks and minerals are the organisms in this case while the sieve is the selection pressures, such as predators, local climate and food availability.

Hey it's Mike from Ohio, lol, I am that caller. I have to agree with you. When I left christianity I still believed in the divine, I just knew that christianity was not the only path, so I did all my own personal research in only theology and history as I was seeking the divine, and another path, long story short, which is why I became a pagan/heathen, Germanic polytheist, or norse pagan. You know, I never thought about researching science for answers to questions I had. So, like I promised Lloyd and Katy, I got a book titled "Human Evolution" by Charles Rivers Publishers. Should be a quick read, only 55 pages, so then I should have a base understanding when I go researching the resources, references, and further reading recommendations listed in this book. I watch Talk Heathen because, it may sound strange, but I find community with atheist because I too deny we need jesus for any type of salvation due to a myth about a talking snake, and I deny the bible as the word of the one true god. I have always been a seeker of truth, I just never thought about finding truth in science. : )

@@scambammer5940 The word pagan comes from the latin word paganus which was used around 4th century by early christians for people in the Roman empire who lived in rural areas and still practiced polytheistic ethnic religions, or the "old ways. Today the word pagan has become very eclectic to include faiths other than abrahamic, ie wicca. The word Heathen refers to someone who practices one specific ethnic belief. Germanic polytheism and Norse Paganism are the same belief as the religion of the Germanic peoples, prior to the forced conversion of the roman catholic church. Here's something to consider if you want to get a grip on how long life has been evolving on Earth. It's about 3.5 billion years but that's just a number to most people; it's nearly impossible to grasp. Think of it this way (I've done the math): If you started counting at a rate of 3 numbers per second and did nothing else; no sleeping, eating or anything, 24 hours a day it would take a bit more than *_35 years to get the number 3.5 billion!_* Now think of *_EVERY ONE_* of those numbers that you spent half of your life counting as a *_whole year!_* That's how long life has been evolving. And a lot can happen when offspring are slightly different to their parents and everything is competing for limited resources for that mind blowing amount of time. Keep that in mind when you try to say life couldn't get this complex without a designer. Class dismissed. 8^)

I don't understand how any moderately intelligent or educated person could utter these words without being aware of how illiterate, ignorant, and mind-numbingly stupid they sound. In any debate about matters of fact (as opposed to mere opinions) then the statement "it just seems to me" is completely irrelevant as it would only be said by someone who was unable to martial any actual evidence to support their position. It sure didn't, it took trillions of smaller mutations and that's not to mention the trillions that just killed the organism, to get to our ape like ancestor, then about the same amount to get to us. Mutations is the random thingy (but not really as any biochemist, wait... I'm a biochemist, will tell you) and natural selection is the determining factor of whether a mutation survives. If it's beneficial or at the very least not detrimental to a point where it hinders procreation, it will be passed on. Now, all of these mutations, all of this changing environment all plays a part in this, now give it 3.5 BILLION YEARS and it's pretty much inevitable.

I really hate the word 'complexity' when brought up in these conversations. It's such a ill-defined term and the only unifying concept that I see different creationists apply is "That which appears intelligently made." So, to me, arguing that things are naturally complex is a pointless struggle. Creationists (of all beliefs), I have a question. Have you considered that humans don't inherently know something is nature? Is it maybe we can only compare airplanes to birds that we can see a difference? And thus, maybe examples of uncreated things are necessary to establish the idea of a created one?

"Why did you create everything?" What is the purpose of life?" Me. My question is easy. Didn't take long to come up with this. "God, why did you create mosquitoes, bedbugs, fleas, ticks, parasites, flesh eating bacteria, viruses. The whole gambit of things that want to drink our blood and infect us with disease. What was the thinking there? Were you trying to F#%& with us? The only thing we can take from this thought experiment is that our world is not perfect. The universe is not perfect. All life on this planet dies everyday thru no fault of its own. 99% of all life to ever appear on this planet has went extinct. Died off. Died out. If life is as precious as religion claims. Is that why you are afraid to use your own name ? Or are you using librarians name because you can't really counter what he says so you have to resort to making him look stupid by saying stupid stuff and pretending you're him ? "Not that I mind because it takes me less time to come back then it does for someone to try and keep reporting me to their fellow communist comrades because they can't stand getting destroyed in a debate." Ooh, I can cook a year's worth of meal with that much salt. "I had to keep my word I told him after he told me repeatedly he reported me for hate thought for example the idea that I didn't agree with his Faith based belief in transgenderism being proven by the scientific method. " Oh so you mean you can't actually prove that transgenderism isn't real so you had to go with "I didn't agree" instead. And then just because you were so salty that you couldn't prove it you had to strawman it as "faith based". LOL, the salt is real. "Or maybe he reports me for hate if I don't agree with his white supremacist position that indigenous people of color should be thrown off of their indigenous land because white people in Israel make the claim that God told Moses the land belongs to them, kind of strange that atheists are so overwhelmingly Zionist when they reject the only claim zionists have for Israel and that claim is God told Moses the land belongs to them. Otherwise, if he really said something stupid you could've just said that using your own name, or some other random name. You didn't really need his name just to say the truth. But trying to slander him does require that. But I really wouldn't put it past christians to try and approach any issue dishonestly. As I had said before, lying is your kinds bread and butter.

If complexity of life means it was created - then what does it say about the Creator? I mean if he is more complex than life - then he was created, if he is less complex then you’re proving evolution as that’s basically what evolution is all about - less complex things create more complex things!

maybe if you wouldve resetted the universe simulator a few more thousand times, life would spontaneously result from one the constitutions? aka that would mean you just need lotsa potential tries at a universe n somewhen stuff would come along. how you prove life comin upon by non chance is the way more groundbreaking thing to note tho. also, sorry my slurry tune i have atm, still in the process of realizin dealin with whats sorta gods of recreation creation in lab conditions.

creationists strike me as people who WANT to be stupid. if you look back through history every single instance of something that has been attributed to the supernatural has been show to have a natural explanation, life might be a bit weird, but no one can deny we are made of atoms, molecules, organic matter, we are not some supernatural ghostly material no one can explain. the old favourite lightning was once thought of as special, now we now it's the same stuff as in that light bulb over my head, rain - it's just water. making sacrifices to - whatever - we have stopped doing that, most people in the west wouldn't sacrifice their kids for a better corn flakes crop. EVERY flipping instance demonstrates that there is no superpower, no sky daddy, directing things, everything so far has been a part of nature, why do the nit wits insist on making themselves look and sound like they were dropped on their head, recently??

Hey John, its Mike from Ohio, I am that caller, lol.: ) I am a pagan/heathen, meaning I don't have a bible, and I deny the bible as the word of a holy god, and I dont believe we need jesus for any type of salvation based on a desert myth about a talking snake. But you are correct, I have only done my own individual research in theology and history, and never in science/biology. But like I promised Lloyd and Katy I did get a book titled Human Evolution by Charles Rivers Editors. Should be a quick read, only 55 pages, so that should give me a base understanding when I go into researching the references and further reading suggestions in this book. I have always been a seeker of truth, just never thought about searching for truth in science. Thank you for the suggestion : )

It's a pity Katy is not up to date with research and isn't aware of the use of the appendix in humans. I suppose it's easy to state that something is made wrong and she (Katy) could do a better job of designing it, when that statement is never going to be put to the test. Even protozoa, single celled organisms were considered to be simple but with the advent of technology scientists know how complex they are. DNA is amazingly complex and is the best information storage system known to mankind. We cannot make it ourselves. The list of examples of complexity too advanced to be accidental is overwhelming

The Bible explains quite clearly why we see a creation groaning for its' Creator and Katy's teeth being a problem. The world was made perfect and man corrupted it. If anyone wants to find out why read the book of Genesis in the Bible. (only not The New World version put out by Watch Tower Press). Bible Society Bibles, Nelson and Zondervan publishers should give a person good quality translations

Well if you had something anything changing into something else you might have something . But you don't have that . Yes intelligent designed . And we might be the first design in which would not be the best design . Your mind needs to understand that nothing is turning into something totally different. This is millions of years ( acording to you ) we are in right now and nothing is turning or changing . .

What Katy is saying is she can think of *improvements* on the human animal. She would have a mouth that doesn't bite it's tongue. That's not a design, it's an improvement on an existing structure. And this only exists in her mind. If she were to try to actually design and build it she would fail miserably.
