the chip tune sounds were used in the beginning of the band to cut through the wall of sound, and they adopted it as a characteristic, which they have been able to explore in obvious, subtle, heavy and beautiful ways. Just another dynamic HTB use on their chosen pallet. They like to challenge themselves and their audience. Also, the lyrics really are poetry all on their own.

This band was way ahead of their time, way more serious about their artistic craft as musicians, and they were smarter than the majority of their peers in the core/emo scene. They conquered the world on their own terms, and no other band from that area can say the same.

At the beginning he says "activate, initiate, instruments set to yesterday" then they do that crazy intro, where they start their instruments and travel back through time! It's also like the whole album itself in one song, A Natural Death for the album.

these dudes are super cool. they did a world tour that they self funded and played a lot of obscure countries. their keyboard player is really unique to have in a hardcore band. suggestions with long song titles - save us from the archon - you dont recall our house near the ocean. red sparowes - "And by Our Own Hand Did Every Last Bird Lie Silent in Their Puddles, the Air Barren of Song as the Clouds Drifted Away. For Killing Their Greatest Enemy, the Locusts Noisily Thanked Us and Turned Their Jaws Toward Our Crops, Swallowing Our Greed Whole."

I still can't believe out of all the tracks in the poll that this one had the most votes, but I love it lol. HORSE the band is often referred to as Nintendocore, for better or worse. Their keyboardist uses a variety of tones but a lot of them are chiptune sounds. The chiptune sounds were apparent in the tracks you checked out previously (more so in the first of the two songs, as you did a two track video because the songs were short). I don't blame you for not remembering though as it was a long time ago and you check out so many songs. Here's a track where it's very apparent: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIu1Y4J6eK2iars. Obviously they use some samples too like the level up/game over sounds a few minutes into this track (which I find really cool that they start separate and then end up overlapping each other at the end of the section). These guys will always hold a soft spot in my heart for being so unique and the Earth Tour they did with the 10 1/2 hour movie/documentary they released for it. Also, they did an entire EP about Pizza, which even includes a cover of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song!

This is my favorite Horse the Band song because it captures so much range in just a few minutes. The music alone tells a story and just sounds awesome. I'm still hoping they start making full albums again. "Your Fault" EP came out recently but it's kind of a tease. I'm excited to hear more.

HORSE the band is legendary! The early albums R.Borlax and The Mechanical Hand were a lot heavier in the video game samples, a lot of the greatest hits like Cutsman, Birdo, and Pol's Voice that very heavily sample the games they reference. Their newer albums A Natural Death and Desperate Living have a lot more musically experimental sections like the second half of this song but they've always had those sudden wild style and tempo changes on a dime. Definitely a whole discography that needs a second listen because the first listen just blasts you numb with density! I'd love to see your take on Manateen and Science Police. You'd be the first on youtube to do those!

As a metal drummer, glad you noticed the drummer pretty early on. He is legitimately a machine. I mean that both metaphorically and in a more literal sense. That's just his style, sorta like Matt Greiner or the dude from HEALTH. He's not always doing the most groovy or flashy shit but he's always just a-GOING, ya know? It's the kind of thing where it sneaks up on you. You're listening to a groove and all of a sudden it's like "wait WTF is the drummer doing right now????" He never stops. Edit: Also, friends and I have speculated that the song is supposed to resemble something similar to the experience of smoking DMT or, given the sinister undertones, more accurately Salvia. The beginning of the song (everything before "time after time") would be blasting off and coming up, followed by complete dissociation, followed by the onset of panic, followed by a false confidence as the trip first starts to fade and a semblance of control is reestablished, and ending with coming to terms with and accepting that truly there was no control to begin with, so really nothing was lost. And that's ok.
@SmashAtoms
@SmashAtoms Жыл бұрын
The whole song is about time travel. They took the phrase “Time after time” from Cyndi Lauper and used it in the literal sense. Is there time after time ends? It all plays into the neverending cycle of life and death that is the theme of the album.

Awesome to have you back, man! Things have been weird without you every day and Critical Role every week. Anyway, only other Horse the Band I've heard is last time you had them on the channel. I think last time I said I found them pretty cool, but more a novelty rather than something I'd sit down and listen to. I liked this better. It's definitely lacking in coherency, definitely very chaotic, but I think I like all the individual parts enough to make up for it. I also think the "chiptune" stuff was better integrated here, more of an interesting spice than the main dish. Really, really loved the "chill, atmospheric" section, and a lot of the riffs were really killer. So, yeah, this may inspire me to check out the band more.

They aparently represent something called "Nintendocore" - Hardcore, Metalcore and Chiptune (more specifically older Video Game 8-bit music, hence the name!) fused together. I have to admit, it definitely creates an interesting sound, I do appreciate that. While I may be used to these kind of weird genre mixes, some may not be and they will just cast it off as novelty. From what I've read about it, this genre remains pretty niche (even after it peaked in late 2000's and HORSE the Band is supposed to be bigger band in this movement. Let's hope that we will see more of these obscure genres!
@CriticalReactions
@CriticalReactions 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, I love hearing these obscure genres and seeing how bands incorporate odd elements into more traditonal ideas and sounds. I'll have to look more into this Nintendocore. The idea sounds fun but this specific song was a bit too chaotic. Maybe I can find a tamer song that incorporates the chiptune sounds.
@xFuzzyxPicklesx

not really a genre, just a bunch of bands trying to sound like horse the bands first album lol. HORSE the band IS the movement, no one else really even toured or released full albums. Its a tongue in cheek thing that spiraled out of control

That's the thing, Horse the Band is both sort of gimmicky but also really good songwriters. Like, the whole Nintendo thing would be a negative for me (it's not in actuality because they do it so well) but they're still one of my favorite bands. Also, like the other guy said, they are the "movement." They are the originators and pre-date the term Nintendocore.
