How to generate a Stoner Doom name, (size related adjective/ marijuana related word/ fantasy title or creature/expletive), although usually names will only contain 2-3 of these, personal favourites are Green Druid (who released a legitimately fantastic album based on a Lovecraftian lyrical concept, At The Maw of Ruin), Goblin Cock and Acid Mammoth EDIT: also funny you should touch on not being afraid to spend alot of time with the same concept, it’s kind of a hallmark of the genre, along with a very specific style of bluesy riffing and fuzzed out guitar tones. The whole genre is built around kind of putting the listener into this meditative state that I find very much akin to the feeling of dissociating while high, and it certainly does its job, if the bands are to be believed, much of the material is written while high.

Not the song i'd chosen off the album as a showcase but the whole album is pretty dope and an absolute trip it was actually a discovery for me in 2019 when this album came out and was quite a novel combination of ethereal vocals, space-y electronic and stoner doom guitarwork but it somehow works

I had not listened to this one but I am really liking the sound of it. The female vocals give it a soft loud sound that works really well

Sludge is a combination of doom metal and hardcore punk, while stoner metal/rock is a combination of doom metal and acid/psychedelic rock. So, both of them feel doom-like but push the original "clean," classic heavy-metally sound (of Black Sabbath) into a more thick, dense, dirty territory, especially since sludge got an injection of Southern sound. The key differences are sludge being heavier, grittier, more extreme and chaotic, and includes some faster, punk passages and abrupt tempo changes in general. The vocals are usually gritty or harsh, and the guitars are detuned and with lots of feedback. (The godfathers of the genre, Melvins, which is a huge band by any measure, are said to have influenced both grunge and sludge in the '80s, so there's that connection. One can say grunge is pop sludge.) In contrast, stoner leans toward less heavy but more rhythmic, monotonous, longer, trippy songs with lots of layering and effects. It tends to have clean, ethereal, even female vocals. No wonder those two genres so well that it's often hard to draw a line between the two. Electric Wizard and Weedeater might be examples of a perfect crossover, but MWWB also mixes those two and many more. (I like their tags on Bandcamp - you'll find there shoegaze, space rock, psychedelic rock and __doomgaze__.)

Breaking down Sludge and Stoner into combinations of other genres greatly helps. Thanks

that's exactly how i'd explain doom metal to someone, think of black sabbath but make it dirtier, the fuzzy, muffleness of being pushed into a mud pit.

Pretty damn cool! I'd label this stoner/psych/space rock (those electronic sounds are space rock signatures)

In defense of the person who picked this song, they did get their band name from a random word generator

Definitely sludgy, but also very stoner-doomish with some psychedelic elements. The oddest element here are those high dream-pop-ish vocals, which is a really odd/unusual fit with the genre! Can't think of another band with that combination of genre/vocals. Musically it does get a bit too repetitive, but that's kinda stoner-doom's thing; just wallowing in the hazy wall-of-sound for long periods. There's just enough changes here to keep my attention, but it's generally the kind of metal I'd like to put on when I'm doing something else.
