Hi ΛΤLΛS, thank you for the thoughtful analysis! I think you hit the nail on the head with focusing on texture, form (something very few people talk about) and the transformation aspect. I'm very happy you liked piece and the lead synth in particular! I'm really proud of it and it's pretty much the signature sound of the soundtrack :) For the record the "electric guitar" pad is indeed a saturated synth as you suspected ;) And thank you Emerald for requesting the piece!

Woah wasn’t expecting Coalescence! You should *really* listen to “...con lentitud poderosa”. It’s the spiritual successor to this song by the same composer for risk of rain 2, and it’s my favourite out of all of risk of rain
@johan45883 жыл бұрын
Yeah the new one is better
@emerald36163 жыл бұрын
I personally am against him listening to "...con lentitud poderosa". I did give thought to recommending that song to him instead of Coalescence, but I decided against it. The reason I did this is that the song very much requires the context of Coalescence to get the full experience, even Chris Christodoulou describes the song as a "satellite" to Coalescence because it depends on you having listened to it. The issue with this is now that he's listened to Coalescence is that there isn't enough material to get a video analysis out of. Half of it is just a rearrangement of Coalescence which means he would just be rehashing old material. Combine that with a portion of the song being a bridge which doesn't have much interesting to analyze and you're left with only roughly 1 minute 30 seconds of material that is worth making an entirely new video for. Don't get me wrong, that is the best 1 minute 30 seconds Chris has ever made in my opinion which is why it's my favorite song in that OST, but it's just not enough to make a video on when there are many other songs from this soundtrack and various other soundtracks he can listen to instead and would make for a more interesting analysis.
@tokyobassist3 жыл бұрын
Ok but that's Chris' feelings on the song not yours lol. Doesn't mean people can't appreciate the song especially when Coalescence is here with no context when it actually plays in game.
@grahg3 жыл бұрын
@@emerald3616 I agree, though if he were to react and analyze a track from Risk of Rain 2, it would make sense to do a boss theme like Koppen, Antarctic Oscillation, or You're Gonna Need a Bigger Ukulele to get a feel of the heavy boss-fight portions of the Risk of Rain games, not just another level track. Basically it would make sense to do a boss theme over a level theme because they're a big part of the games, too. I just can't decide between the three.

What the heck! I was the one who kept asking for this video and youtube didn't even give me the notification for it! KZbin is messed up sometimes. I don't really have anything else to comment anymore because my purpose in life has been fulfilled. I guess I'll say that the reason I recommended this song over other songs by this composer was because you said in one video that you like it when songs develop on a single motif and also because it's so much more popular than the other songs that I figured it would have a better chance of being analyzed with the OST being an indie game. Anyways, I have finally reached inner peace and can move on from this mortal realm. Ok, I know I said I have nothing else to comment on but I lied; I keep editing this comment adding more stuff I want to talk about lol. One thing that I hoped you would notice was the title of the piece. Chris Christodoulou is very good with his titles and puts a decent amount of thought into them, with the titles of the Risk of Rain OSTs all being related to weather or water in some form (because rain) while also being related to the piece itself. In this one's case, it's called "Coalescence" because it, well, "coalesces" instruments as time goes on and the word comes from the term for the property of water droplets to combine into a single water droplet when they contact each other, which is the relation to rain.

Something to note about Coalescence is that the composer, Chris Christoudoulou, did not compose it with the intent of it being a climactic part of the game. Hopoo, the developer, had Christoudoulou compose tracks as he willed and used them as he saw fit. Coalescence would not have worked as well as it did in any other application, its strength is attributed not only to Christoudoulou making an incredible track, but also Hopoo's incredible sense of how and where to best utilize it. For additional context for Risk of Rain itself; The loose story of the game is that you are someone on a cargo ship that got attacked while passing by a planet and ended up crash landing there. Following it in an escape pod, you make your way across the planet, using the mysterious teleportation technology found there, before finally arriving at the wreckage of the ship and Coalescence begins to play as you make your way through the downed ship and towards the bridge. The initial melancholic feel to the track can then be attributed to a feeling of "Oh god, everyone on this ship died" and the progression and layering of the track could reflect an emotional progression in the player character. Risk of Rain's writing is, for better or for worse, too minimalistic to really tell, but there are certainly themes of transformation as you detailed, although it's ambiguous whether they reflect physical or mental translations with he ending text for each character being things like "...and so he left, with everything but his humanity." and "...and so it left, entirely forgetting its original purpose."
@saacattaac0072 жыл бұрын
Well I think that Commando’s playthrough is considered the *most* canon run in the games, and he absolutely is all about transformation. His character in the first game is that he’s just trying to survive and get off that planet, but he massacres thousands in the process. His character in the second game is him grasping at the fact that maybe he didn’t kill to survive and rather that he liked it, after all he went back. The killing he did at first was necessary for his survival, but the second time around, not at all. He is a monster, in a symbolic sense of the word. And so he left, with everything but his humanity. He could have gathered every single piece of cargo, but he would have lost himself in the process.
@haezelroche2 жыл бұрын
@@saacattaac007 unfortunately hopoo essentially myth busted this for us, the commando we see in the second game is not the same as the first (this was a direct statement from Hopoo themselves), instead the DLC "Survivors Of The Void." character Void Fiend, is considered the commando from the first game (as far as I know Hopoo themselves haven't discredited this, correct me if I'm wrong), corrupted by the void having survived within it for so long, and now is solely focused on killing. (How? We have to go off the partially confirmed theory that both games take place within a time loop created by the Void Reavers so there's that.)

You should listen to Riks of Rain 2's "…con lentitud poderosa" A worthy parellel to this one as 2's final level, where after pure chaos and difficulty, you're greeted by a serene, white walkway, on your way to the final fight of the game. "...and so he left, with everything but his humanity"
@ArtofCrimms3 жыл бұрын
Very much so this one! Where in Risk of Rain you had chaos blowing up while you had this chill snazzy piece in the background, in Risk of Rain 2 you are leaving chaos to find yourself in, quite literally, the "tantrum land" of an angry, lonely 'god', a shattered moon above a maddened planet, with nothing but rain, silence and a walkway to your destiny. Hundreds of them. At this point, you've gone numb to it. All the action happens around you and you barely even recognize it anymore, because it's all you've been seeing. I LOVE this piece, and your breakdown is amazing as usual! What I love about this piece is that, for some, it's a sad song that seems to evoke the disfiguration and "monsterification" of the player character, since you have to use items that you find on the planet to survive, ranging from steroid-laced adrenaline shots, to animal legs, to cursed masks; while for others it's a very energetic piece (the author, Chris Christodoulou, says it's all about the crescendo that is the game, made into one piece). For me it's the former, since it encapsulates the idea of Coalescence, the way molecules of the same element tend to unite to form a greater "body", just like the items become a part of the character. The song builds up little by little, molecule by molecule, until you are left with a body greater than the sum of its parts.

Risk of Rain is a 2d roguelike where you play as a survivor of the crashed transport ship the UES Contact Light. Each level you search for a teleporter while killing the local inhavitants before they kill you. As you go, you will collect loot from the crashed ship in order to make yourself stronger. But be careful, difficulty rises as time goes on, and efficient use of your time can make the difference between becoming an unkillable god or getting crushed like an insect. My belief with the transition is kinda like a realization that the player and character both get lost in the systematic killing that as it builds up and intensifies during the interlude, the floodgates of the final act really drives the humanity and fear of the character in the midst of all this chaos. Gone is the soldier/composed mindset as the aliens push harder and the chaos just tips over. This is a human trying to survive this situation The overall feeling of the game never left the foreign/dystopian feel. The world itself is alien and that feeling of wrongness never left. With this track, as the ending seems near the human emotion threatens and eventually breaks the mask the character puts on which as you explained exposed the human sound through the change in drums and synths to a more 'live' accoustic feel. The composition is honestly some of the best translation of whats going on in the current scene. Very good world building to fit an amazing game.

You're in a very difficult game with increasing difficulty as time passes by and when you reach the final level this songs kicks it very gently at first and you're like "waw this is surprising" and then layers are being added one after another and it represents very well the whole spirit of the game. I'm glad you reviewed it. If I may ask for it again (I did on FF6 Dancing Mad react): "Roar of Departing Souls" from Lost Odyssey. This is a VERY unique song and I think you will love it. If you want context I'll put it below after some space (so you don't read it by accident if you don't want any spoiler): -- - - - - - - - - - Basically the antagonist somehow transforms into the equivalent of a god of death for the final fight of the game. The first 30 seconds of the song is pretty much the loading time of the fight with some light effects. The composer is Nobuo Uematsu who composed the Final Fantasy musics.

I think Apex of the World (rain) from Fire Emblem would be a good one. They really made the best drop like 3 times in an orchestrated type of music, and it sounds great

You probably know this but this music signifies or questions if we are the bad guys instead of the monsters.

I would LOVE it if you reacted to "The Rain Formerly Known as Purple" and "...con lentitud poderosa" from Risk of Rain 2, they are 100% gold (or purple heh)

If you enjoyed this song, there are some other in the OST of both games that you could like too. Some of my faves would be: Into the doldrums Terra pluviam Moisture deficit The raindrop that fell to the sky The rain formerly known as purple Arxtic oscillation Hope you enjoy these

You should check "Con lentitud poderosa" from Risk of Rain 2 Same composer and is the music for the final level like Coalescence

You should also try The Rain Formerly Known as Purple from Risk of Rain 2. Same composer. It's my favourite song.

Ironically, I found Coalescence due to it sharing the name with the most chaotic song I’ve heard in a long time by ExileLord. It’s part 1 of a 2 parter song, with part 2 being called Segmentation. It’s a very loud song, and it almost sounds like an unbeatable boss battle with small flashbacks to the enemy’s past. I might be a little biased, since I love underdog tracks, but I highly recommend the listen, even if it is a more acquired taste.

You should react to Chanson d'Automne.. which is another ost from risk of rain and Rain formerly known as purple Which is a callback to the former in Risk of Rain 2

Still pushing for the Dark Souls 3 Epilogue. It was such an amazing way to wrap up the journey that was that game.

You gotta react to DeadBolt ost, same composer. It is a whole other world i swear.

While Deadbolt is good, I believe the Risk of Rain series is better
@mayonnaise23963 жыл бұрын
@@temesis09 they’re different. Deadbolt is an amazing game, but not necessarily meant to be replayed. And it’s unfair to compare a franchise to a single game. Deadbolt has frankly groovier music, better, crisper gunplay, and a better state of iterative gameplay and flow compared to risk of rain.

Very good Video about an amazing piece, didnt expect Risk of Rain at all. I definetly shoot my shot and suggest a piece of the Vinland Saga sountrack and specifically "Somewhere else" from Yutaka Yamada. Keep up the great work!

Curious how he mentions someone becoming more human, when the underlying narrative is that commando is losing his empathy and humanity through the game.
@buntado63 жыл бұрын
Well, one of the robot characters seemed to have awakened something in it's ending. But even applying to the commando I always imagined it was like a last scream of anger, cursing existence and wondering why fate had taught him to live empathically if it would eventually force him into a situation where he would need to become a monster to survive.

One thing I liked about Tartarus from Persona 3 is that the dungeon has one core theme that has more layers the higher you go up until the intensity is max at the top.

I think it's awesome how the song gets crazier and crazier until it fades into nothing, Cristodoulou had one job, NAILED IT.

One of the key aspects of this song is that it's an overture of the entire game's score, which you've been exposed to on failed attempt after failed attempt. You've finally made it, good luck. It all coalesces here. Leitmotif is a powerful tool.

Wonderful breakdown of an indie game song. I love the wistful tone of this whole song, only one other indie title captured that feeling without lyrics in its soundtrack for me. Check out a song called Noir Sequin - The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa
