Did I forget anything? LOL ;) What are some problems you come across while using your compost toilet?

I can't find one single video talking about having an upset tummy. Diarrhoea? What happens then. I want a composting toilet but I'm wondering what happens when it doesn't go in the bucket all in a tidy poop. Haha please help let me know what to expect 🙏
@TinyDreamer3 жыл бұрын
@@missmangleHi! That's absolutely understandable 😊 I do mention diarrhea in the video...you can do a couple things. Go in a separate bag, tie up and throw out or go in the back and cover with Diatomaceous earth or something else...I end up taking it out sooner because liquidy waste dies attract fruit flies.

If every time you stand up the blue panel covers the solid waste bucket. How do you wipe your bum and throw the tissue in the solid waste bin. Do you need to press on the toilet seat with your knee or hand to open the blue panel every time you stand up, wipe your bum and throw your used tissue into the solid waste container. Or is there something that holds it open when you stand up and wipe? Thank you so much for reading :) I’m building a tiny home and and thinking about installing the separett villa 9020 but I’m wondering if it might be too complicated for guests who will stay.
@TinyDreamer3 жыл бұрын
@@MattHutton Great question! Yes, every time you stand up the blue panel covers the waste so you can do a couple things; wipe while sitting down and drop in solid waste bucket, wipe and then stand using a knee or hand to press down to open. I know others who own this toilet and have made a manual for it to use as a guide. I think I'll be doing the same! There have been a few people who have used it, mostly women, and I had to explain to each. If I had a manual, it'd be much easier! 😊

It is worth the effort.

This video is very informative and honestly, something needs to be done to make composting toilets with women in mind. I like the idea of just getting in the shower but it also can be inconvenient during the middle of the night. I am really trying to think about a future where everyone is responsible for their own waste and I want to be more responsible and be able to live off grid. There are some women saying that this toilet is easy to use when it comes to menstrual cycles and I highly disagree....or even the other problems one can face. There ARE challenges. Thank you for this video. I need a simple toilet system. This is a lot and I had been wondering about it and if this was the route for me. I'm going to try the cassette toilet.
@TinyDreamer4 жыл бұрын
Interesting! I've never heard of the cassette toilet. I've gotten pretty used to using this toilet and I'll admit I love it! Challenges and all! I even just added a stronger fan for the odors since my pipe is up 10 ft.
@wtrgypsy45334 жыл бұрын
@TrustNotMyHeart Fwiw, I changed my cassette toilet for a Separett a few days ago. I had the older version of the Dometic CTW4110. (Oh, I should also mention that I live on a boat and am on my own. It does make a difference.) Compared to my previous 'pump out' toilet, the cassette toilet was wonderful and has served me very well for more than 8 years. But, being on a boat, the cassette access point was at floor level and, since the door needed a bit of pressure behind it, I had to get flat out to close it properly. This was all fine, until I developed arthritis. Getting on the floor is no problem, getting back up..... well that has become a whole different story, now! lol. Even so, I would have happily replaced my old cassette toilet with a new one, IF I hadn't found the Separett AND this video. Other composting toilets, like the Airhead, were just not an option for me. From what I can see, they require you to lift the whole top off the toilet, put it aside (somewhere) and empty the contents into a bag by upending the box in which it is collected. That's a complete no-go for me. Apart from the heavy lifting, the whole process has me WEARING partly composted human waste written all over it! A cassette toilet IS a simple toilet system, and a great off-grid solution, for sure. But it is not without challenges of its own. Here's what I would tell you about living with a cassette toilet 24x7: * You will need a spare cassette. Unfortunately, these are expensive but at least one spare is an absolute must. Non off-grid visitors who are used to a domestic flushing toilet will have a 'moment' about your facilities, whatever you ohoose! But be aware that they WILL flush the living daylights out of any toilet, if a flush facility is available, and most cassette toilets have them. No matter what you tell people, they will fill a cassette in a heart beat! They can't help themselves, they just have no concept of a finite and limited capacity in that regard. Bless 'em. * Be prepared to empty/rinse the cassette every 2/3 days at least. Come rain or shine. Possibly even daily if there are two of you using it round the clock. This is not a particularly onerous task (although some disposal points can be a bit grim). Generally speaking it is a quick, simple and relatively clean(ish) job. It's also really easy to get into a routine. Note that your cassette will be mainly filled with urine/water, so they can get bloomin heavy! Imagine a pack of 6x2-litre bottles of water. Your cassette might weigh half as much again, they can be the equivalent of 17-19 litres, when full. Its another reason to empty it regularly. The more you empty your cassette, the more chemicals you will use. You can't get away without using them, when you combine wee and poop. They are necessary for breaking down the waste and stopping smells. If you are doing a comparison of running costs, you should factor this in. * You will have to be mindful about toilet paper too. This is another biggie for non off-grid visitors. WRT putting it into the cassette, I can tell you that the 'marine' type of paper really does break down very quickly and makes disposal/rinsing a significantly easier job. But, again, this is expensive. Happily, for once, the best alternative is to use the cheapest toilet paper you can get. Avoid the thick multi-ply stuff. It just clogs everything up and makes emptying a real pain. You'll be rinsing for ever! Whichever paper you go for, you have to be careful how much you use. There's a float mechanism inside the cassette which works with the toilet to indicate when it is full. It can be quite delicate. I have just disposed of three cassettes and this mechanism was broken in every single one of them. It's not the end of the world, it's just the end of being alerted when your cassette is getting full (until you fix/replace the part). Overfilled cassettes get a bit messy. The basic message is to use the right toilet paper, sparingly, and only when really necessary. A wee certainly isn't worth it, put the paper in a bin. Again, non off-grid visitors will need education in this regard. Not only do they use paper by the forest, they put EVERYTHING down the toilet. Baby and face wipes are a cassette nightmare. * You can help prevent 'skid marks' by putting a sheet of toilet paper over the drop hole. It isn't fool proof, though. You will end up getting 'down and dirty' to clean it some times. And it must BE kept clean to avoid stray poop catching in the closure mechanism and popping up again where you don't want it and least expect it! General cleaning of the toilet isn't too much of a problem though. Just use tank-friendly stuff - ie not bleach. * Finally, it really is worth regularly maintaining the cassette and toilet, especially the seals, to keep it all working properly and well. Most parts are easily available, although I found Dometic's Customer Support a bit hopeless. Personally, I would say that the cassette toilet and the Separett are both simple toilet systems. The challenges are just different. You can't be sick in either, for the same reasons and, while separation might cause a few issues with using the Separett, the combination causes different issues for the cassette. Its early days for me with mine. Right now I am just really happy that I don't have to go crawling on the floor any more, and am looking forward to not having to do the 'poo run' three times a week. I have invested in a small (telescopic) she-wee which seems to be doing the trick if/when I need it, but I appear to be a reasonably accurate 'tinkler' not a 'sprinkler' LOL. Otherwise I am not getting too bothered by the odd stray bit of wee in the poop bucket. Not yet, anyhow. I hope this helped. Good luck with whatever you choose.

@@wtrgypsy4533 Holy wow! Thank YOU for your cassette toilet review. I personally did not want to have to empty any liquids. It's one of the reasons why I didn't go with the natures head toilet. The other reason is like you said when you empty it you have to take it outside and dump it into a bag and I don't have the strength to do that nor do I want to clean all that up. I'm excited for you having a new Separett!!! You're going to love it! 😉❤

@@TinyDreamer Oh dear, I did go on, didn't I? And I do appear to have a downer on visitors. I like em..... honestly! I've just had 15 years of explaining a variety of toilet 'rules' to confused people and I am not looking forward to telling my brothers they will now have to sit down to pee. Lol. I hope it helps, though. Cassette toilets are fine, really they are. A great alternative especially if space is an issue, and better than other composting toilets, imho. Unless of course, you really ARE looking to properly compost the waste, dig it into the land etc. which I totally support. But, if you are just looking for convenience (pardon the pun), being aware of all aspects like the long term running costs (chemicals, replacement cassettes) and the weight of a full cassette, might help in making a decision. Like your video helped me. I think the comments here really show how great your information is. I could have kissed you when I found it! I LOVE this loo, too. It's only been a few days, but already I am SO happy I did this. It's an unusual solution for someone in my situation, too. It's caused alot of discussion here. Unfortunately, I do have to collect and dispose of liquids as you would with a Natures/Air Head. But this is not proving to be a problem. I have lots of land nearby to throw it on (I won't throw it in the marina/river). After all, I have spent 8 years hauling full cassettes almost half a mile, 3 times a week, it is nothing by comparison. You bring up a great point about the Nature/Air Head . They have to be taken *outside* to dump the contents in a bag. It's got to be a consideration, especially if you live close to others. Who wants to watch their neighbours doing that!? I am on an inland waterway in the UK. Not only would I have the weather to contend with (dodging around on a frozen deck doesn't appeal), any spillages can only end up on me or in the water. Probably both. Its just not for me. Anyhow. Am going on again. THANKYOU. (I have no idea how to get an emoji into this... but I'd do a heart for SURE and a big old smiley face)

The separett is GREAT! I think these things will happen with each toilet and there are different challenges to overcome. Theres a video on the natures head toilet that I watched recently, and I watched the man lift this big ol toilet, take it outside, dump the contents into another bag....imho, that seemed like such a chore especially because I have restrictions with lifting due to surgeries, pain, injuries...so I am blessed I chose the separett! I'd get another one if I had to do it all over again! There are even so many people who had the natures head and switched to the separett. But if you dont mind all the nuances that will come also with the natures head, go for it! Tiny Dreamer i was going with Incredible Tiny homes in 2018 and that funding company didn’t have their shit together to fund any of the homes. I put the build on hold. Then I watched your video about the little things they did wrong on your home and now I have reservations about using them. I’m shopping around for a great builder to make sure I get a good one.

Check them out!! Their prices are very similar to ITH but their builds come with SO Much in the price. Most of their builds INCLUDE a TV, a refrigerator, a couch bed storage with an 8" memory foam mattress, a built in bookcase, a toilet, a shower curtain and liner, an electric stove top burner, I microwave, a many split and a couple even come with main sleeping beds with storage, downstairs bedroom options! I was floored..all in $50'sK. If you are still thinking about using ITH and you want my "mistake list" to know what to watch out for and make sure they do the things right, you can pm me on fb and I can send it. I own this toilet. Have had my girlfriend and multiple female guests use our separate composting toilet, and never had an issue with separating urine. I’ve never heard of needing to use a funnel.
@TinyDreamer3 жыл бұрын
Well, some people, like me and others I'm finding out, DO need the funnel. When you're a woman, there are just things that happen to where it doesnt work out the way it's supposed to. We have 3 holes doing three different things. A hole for Urine, a hole for waste and a hole for blood. When a woman is doing #2 and peeing at the same time only one occurs...while delivering the waste into the back and needing to go pee at the same time, urine will trickle out too. It doesn't shoot forward, it trickles back because of the pressure of a full waste coming out.... that stops the stream of the urine and it all just trickles together. There are other incidents where it also happens. Another incident was when a 14 year old autistic girl wanted to use my toilet. She was scared and fidgety and crying. We ended up taking her elsewhere. She wouldn't have been ...calm...allowing her urine to fall into the correct hole. She didnt know any better. She would have been jumping around, not sitting still and just plain confused at why there wasn't "normal" water in a toilet. So. Many. incidents that can happen. Same with diarrhea. No you're not supposed to put the liquidy waste back there but..sometimes we have to. When that happens, same thing...your bowels release and sometimes there is no control on where the bodily liquids that are shooting out go. I'm glad your gf and the multiple women guests that use it have no problems. That has not been the case with me. As we grow older there are just things that happens to a womans body. When one is drunk and you're slouched on the toilet, no one wants to sit up correctly to have it flow right, people just want to..release their bowels or just go pee. And when those who drink are using your toilet they arent thinking about where to direct what comes out each hole. Women can also develop cysts which can close their hole and the urine isnt directed into the front, its forced into the back. There are men who have had sex changes and maybe the doctor didnt form the hole in the exact place a womens is and urine will trickle in the back. I can add other stuff that could happen with women as we get older but I hope you see the point. 🙏

I live in California wine country & I'm converting a nice shed into a studio apartment. I'm planning on renting it out as a vacation rental. I would like to install a Separett and I'm wondering if this is the best composting toilet to install for a situation where I will be cleaning the toilet after each guest
@TinyDreamer2 жыл бұрын
This is a great concern. And truth us, I'll be renting out my tiny house airbnb and will be doing the same exact thing and have the same exact concern. I used to ise plastic garbage bags but now that I have my own land, I bought a compost tumbler to dispose of the waste. The problem I have with it, is that with the compostable bags they send you or that you buy last for 3 weeks before you need to change it out. If I'm renting out the tiny house airbnb nightly, that's around 30 compost bags (that hasnt started the compost process yet) that I'll have to put in that tumbler which will take longer to compost. It's also that many more compost bags that I'll have to buy. The other problem I have is that when I got to my land, they installed a 1.5 inch pipe for septic because they knew only grey water material would be going through the pipe. At the time, I hadnt thought about renting my tiny house out airbnb so they installed the smaller pipe. They also made mention that toilet paper would get stuck in the pipes if they were to be used as waste pipes. I'm not sure how to remedy this. Your question/concern raises a bigger concern for me now because I didnt realize exactly how much it would be used if used daily. And I doubt I'll be able to leave each persons waste in the toilet per guest. I'm sure they'd want the experience of a clean toilet each stay. 😔

Hahah I think you covered most of it, graciously too. So many of the worries I had having Menorrhagia which is heavy bleeding with clots. I was wondering if you can try to dissolve it with hot water with vinegar. I appreciate the real truth as I consider this toilet. The good thing is I am so close to menopause but when my daughters come to visit I need to tell them how to take care of it. Honestly I am more worried about my husband's splatter and his massive dumps, and to be honest when he throws up it's insanity and never expected. I will probably just buy some of those medical emesis bags and keep them on the wall or in a little basket in the bathroom in case of emergency.
@TinyDreamer4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! :) I'm sorry about your blood clot problem. I have them too but not every time. I wouldnt know what to do for them other than rinsing down. I think I will research it though. You could always make a How To Guide on how to use the toilet for when your daughters come to visit. I have heard of others doing that and I have considered it for guests, as well. If you do get this toilet please do not have your husband throw up in the toilet. I highly suggest bags of some sort or going outside. And personally, when I cannot rush to a bathroom or dont have a bag around I would throw up in my shirt and carry it to the sink so I didnt get anything messed up around me. It doesnt always work out that way. Lol. As far as your husbands massive dumps and splatter...that will happen, too. Keep the Diatomaceous Earth nearby or even some pete moss. I have to be honest I just ran into a serious fly problem due to moisture in the back may it be diarrhea or water from rinsing. About 40 flies flew out and I went on a killing rampage in my house and so did the cats! So please make sure to absorb it in some way. Some would tell you NOT to go diarrhea in the back of one of these toilets but I say cover it the best you can because sometimes we dont have time to rush to a gas station or a neighbors house. I agree about keeping those bags nearby! Great idea!!

Thank you so much for all of this information!! So helpful! Two things I still have questions about: Do you actually pour your blood in the toilet, and if so which compartment do you pour it in? How do you clean up any waste splatter or mess that happens in the bowl and maybe doesn't make it all the way into the compartment? I've heard you shouldn't use water, so I'm wondering how to keep a tidy looking bowl? Thanks!!
@TinyDreamer2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment! Personally I was putting my blood in the sink because it was easier to wash it away with water. You can put it in the urine drain holes, too. The last 2 places I stated had their gray water running on the ground so the more diluted, the better. Now that I have property and had utilities dug underground to my tiny house, all the blood and gray water go into the sewer.. As far as waste splatter, everything should splatter into the bag on the inside because there is no exposed parts inside the toilet. Just the bag. If you happen to splatter in the outside in the bowl, I would just use paper towel and cleaner and sanitizer or wet wipes. Then toss those in the regular garbage can.

@TinyDreamer2 жыл бұрын
The liquid part is stubbed out of the bottom of the tiny house which can then be handled multiple different ways. You can create a french latrine by digging out a pit and put rocks and such in it then diverting the urine into it. You can divert it into a sewer or septic, you can have it drain into a holding tank and that would beed to be emptied.

Hey everyone - First off I appreciate the context in which this video was made and why, but I don't think it's a fair depiction of how our bathroom habits work on a daily basis or how horrific a waterless toilet really is. This is Lornel from FRC Tiny Homes Ltd. We too utilize the Separett Toilet. This is a WATERLESS toilet. It isn't a full composting toilet. There is an interior fan on the inside of this unit which dehydrates the poop and draws the moisture and odours outside the tiny home through proper ventilation. This interior fan will dehydrate the poop enough to remove odours and some of the 'ick factor' before you dispose of it. The composting continues in the composting pile you toss the bag into, or in the trash bin. You can burn or bury it too. It doesn't 'compost' in your toilet so to speak. The poop and the pee are kept separate. (pee exits out along with your grey water with most people's tiny homes) There is a bucket on a rotating mechanism which prevents a poop pile from forming. Every time you sit on the toilet (yes men sit to pee) the bucket rotates (or it's supposed to) and the concealment blue lid opens to a biodegradable bagged bucket. The info in this video is really the worse case scenarios and goodness gracious; the menstrual information is over-the-top and rare instances indeed. How often is a blood clot gonna plug your urine exit hole? I don't imagine very often. Sheesh....and for gawd sake, it's up to you if you choose to sleep with a tampon in. Very difficult to hold that in as you bolt to the bathroom without a feminine product in place. I'm not sure I'd follow any of that advice. It's your business if you leave a tampon in for several hours or not and just follow instructions on the box. We shouldn't be advising folks on how to handle their bodily functions in my opinion. Yikes....shoulder shrug. We all have some horrific experiences with our bodily functions and these happen with or without a waterless toilet. You have to clean your darn toilet no matter what. Yes these are real life circumstances that MAY arise, but rare and not every time you use the toilet. Please DON'T BE ALARMED BY THIS INFORMATION because it isn't every day we have diarrhea, it isn't every day we vomit or vomit & have diarrhea at the same time, or have diarrhea & the menstrual cycle from hell. So please don't let this video deter you from what we feel is the best waterless toilet on the market. There is NO reason to have to pee into a funnel or a paper plate to re-route your pee stream. No you don't want to get pee into the poop bin, so sit yourself on that seat properly and you shouldn't have too much trouble. Again, worse case scenarios being disclosed in this video. Yup, you might have to vomit at some point...I do agree with that scenario; vomit into a properly prepped waste-basket or if you have no choice and time, into the toilet and just remove it afterwards to dispose. It's one more biodegradable bag you get rid of a little earlier than normal is all. For the most part I enjoy this channel, but this over-the-top information really is deterring people from an amazing waterless toilet that has been on the market for over 30 years folks. www.separett.ca/villa-9220-ca

Thanks so much for your response. To address some of your assumptions: There ARE reasons why one should have to use a funnel, I'm just not listing my personal reason here. The other reason could be the person has autism and they have no clue how to divert their urine and they just GO. NNo, not everyone goes to the bathroom the same but these are things that most people experience multiple times in their lives. Next, I LOVE my Separett Compost Toilet and I completely vouch for it. I do a spearett review in another video and highly recommend it. But having this kind of toilet doesnt take away the fact that there are going to be issues when using this toilet as opposed to a flush toilet. No these things don't happen everyday. The purpose of this video was to get people who are interested in going tiny prepared for a composting toilet in more ways than just how to put together the toilet oir to clean it. It's not a negative video and more people than not have appreciated the info for one reason or another. Some people DO have a diarrhea problem daily (IBS, Lactose intolerant), some people ARE constipated more often than not (depending on what you're eating..dairy, bread, gummy candies), some people DO bleed more than one week a month (endometriosis, mennorrhagia, fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease). So maybe let's let others decide for themselves. I'm not trying to deter anyone from buying this toilet and I'm certainly not bashing the business. I will vouch for Separett over any other toilet any day of the week! In fact, I agree with you...these things arent always that bad BUT they happen and can happen and I want people to know and be prepared. There''s nothing wrong with that. Thank you for enjoying my channel for the most part. Stay safe!

Most of this info is absolute nonsense. The funnel and paper plate thing...simply must be a silly joke for relevancy or something. She seems focused on small amounts of liquids getting into the solids containment, which would make zero difference if it did. The fan system is the real key to any composting toilet system. Every toilet on earth should have it. You will never smell anyone's bowel movement again, including yourself. It dries the waste while working as an exhaust for odor. Fyi, these actually are not "composting" at all, as it takes far longer for thermal and creature breakdown to take place than the time that waste would be in any toilet. This gets the waste to a good composting bin to make natural fertilizer or to the trash, nothing more. Don't let this lady's review lead you in any direction. Even without the clear eco-advantages of composting waste and saving drinking water, I would rather use a Separret any day of the week and twice on Sunday over those disgusting, nasty, foul RV toilet and black tank systems. Gross.
@TinyDreamer4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your support! Lololol. I completely disagree with your comments. Especially about the funnel being a "silly" joke. Lol. First of all...if someone doesn't use a funnel or plate..urine gets in the back every single time, in my experience, and causes mold to start growing due to the bacteria that forms when solids and liquids are together. Since the guests dont know what they're doing on my toilet, especially when they've had a few drinks, and they indeed tinkle in the back. Days later I'm noticing a large amount of fruit flies, flies and odor..I go to check and sure enough...waste, toilet paper, to with stains on it from drying urine and mold all around that specific area as well as flies eating off the mold. This has happened with each female guest. So you're damn right I'm going to use a funnel and encourage my guests to use paper plates. I'm not sure if you have a vagina but with women we are all shaped differently down there. There are also certain situations that cause one to pee in the back. If I had your email I would email and tell you MY personal reason it happens but my viewers dont need to know what's going on with MY vagina. Every single time waste AND urine happens..as one is pushing, a small amount of urine can dribble out. It doesnt go in the front because it's not a stream. It's a dribble and dribbles dribble down and out with the waste. If i dont have the funnel it never fails, it dribbles in the back. The point if this video is NOT to deter people away from Separett compost toilet...the point of the video is to share my experiences and tips in what could happen when using the bathroom and ways to prevent it from happening. 95 percent of people have found this video useful. But thanks for your criticisms. 😉🏡
@TinyDreamer4 жыл бұрын
Also with the pipes being up 10 ft in the air the small fan that separett provides was not strong enough to vent out odors and the waste was not drying fast enough allowing fruit flies to gather around the lingering odor. When I got a stronger fan ...problem solved. I had a guest this past week and flies are back. I look in toilet ..urine all in the back. So to prevent all that bacteria from forming it's best to be changed right away. This incident has happened each time with each guest. I should make a toilet use guide. Lol.
