In this episode I talk about the hard to find E28 that is the 533i. Inspired by Hoovie's Garage and the Doug Demuro style of reviewing!
Made for only two short years and delivered to the USA and Japan only. This was the fastest production sedan at the time in 1984. The 535i and 535is came later and took the E28 production through 1988.
As E30 prices have sky-rocketed in the past several years it looks like the big brother E28 is having it's year. Earlier this year a restored 535i in Bronzit sold for $50,000 on bring a trailer. See it here: bringatrailer.com/listing/198...
In this video is also a short clip referencing Planes Trains and Automobiles from 1987.

Fun to watch. I bought one brand new in 1984, back when I was a salesman making way too much money for someone my age and you could write all your business miles off of my taxes and the depreciation credit you got was based on the price I paid for the car! It got soooo expensive to maintain over the years. I finally had to donate it to charity. But owning it and driving it was a blast. My favorite thing was taking it through mountains. Invariably, a Saab Turbo would get on my tail and tailgate me, a situation the 533i LIVED for!. When I got tired of looking at that cheap-ass Saab logo in my mirror, I would drop that 533's 5 speed into second or third and take off. In third gear, I could get it up to 110 mph and still only be cranking 4500 rpm. What REALLY set the 533i apart was the handling. Loved watching Saabs body rolling and crossing the double yellow line as they attempted to give chase. But alas, the poor Saabs always had to throw up the white flag when chasing that Bimmer. Mostly I would see them in the next town where I definitely would slow down for. That car was a cop magnet. Oh and it was also scary as hell to drive in snow. Always filled up the tank and threw two bags of sackrete into the back before a snowstorm.

Nice 533i. I had a gold one with tan leather, automatic. Bought it in 2002 with 250K miles, off of eBay (for $1,500) and in 2010 had it up over 500K miles. So many repairs, upgrades, and maintenance over those eight plus years. Was still running when I sold it. What I miss most is that huge sunroof. Consider the Saab glass sunroof to turn yours into a moonroof, they swap out. And the rear headrests from the 7 series slip right in. 👍 Best regards.

Car looks beautiful. The E28 is the first car I recognized as a BMW when growing up. Interestingly enough, for some weird reason that has been lost to history, Malaysian spec versions of the E28 also had the USDM bumpers. So I grew up thinking that's the default appearance of the E28! And those iconic headrests!

The OBC was standard on the 533i. The only option was a LSD. The OBC is actually pretty simple to use.

I've read about the nightmares people have had on the early m30 starter replacements. Fortunately they made access easier in the B35 like on my e34. I haven't had the liberty of needing to replace the one in my 533i yet. Aside from that I'd argue that m30s are one of the more simple engines to work on.

Awesome car, love it. Had a e23 with the aforementioned engine. Regret I sold it and regret it was auto .. PS. Presenter looks and sounds like Tyler Hoover & Doug Demuro offspring (like Jaden Smith version :/). Too many guys rolling the same script at YouT. He needs to find his own style and originality. Car gets a thumbs up!!! ..but present, a fat thumbs down.. Change the copycat script and maybe next time I’ll watch you again.. Ciau.

Back then BMW wasn't perceived as a luxury car but merely a pricey quality car - similar to Volvo and Saab (sorry VW, you were garbage). The two 5 Series that followed, mainly the E39, were far more stylish and comparable to Jaguar and Mercedes, character-wise, than this generation 5 Series. Then again, the valve cover of the E39 is indeed made of plastic and it breaks with the years.
