Here it is, the new project Mini. I found it on Facebook Marketplace. The plan is to do a budget restoration and get it back to solid and roadworthy condition with a new MOT and fresh bill of health.

Sounds good to me.i normally 8 turns is enough. The only other thing I would mention is check the value clearance first then do a compression test..Kevin.

Its always difficult to discuss specific parts as we have no idea of their history but a couple of points can be made: The fact the head was yellow before it was black shows it was originally a factory fitted head on an A series engine. Maybe not on that one but for sure all 998 A Series were painted in that infamous Putrid Yellow. Later A+ 998s were painted black. Following on from that the factory introduced A+ parts in a very random way. For example you will find A+ parts on ADO16 (1100 / 1300) cars that were never fitted with A+ engines. Like the timing chain cover with the crank sensor bracket is an obvious one. The factory also used that casting as a way to introduce 'lead free' engines and they were indeed all 'lead free'. When you strip it down it should have the triple collet grooves in the valves. But you definitely had a right result there Keith and well diagnosed on the head gasket! Those compressions would be good on a new engine. I would stick some oil additive in when you refill it to first fire it up just to help the compression and oil rings. Might help the auto as well but it all looks like the makings of another fine Mini.

Thank you again Kieth. I have fitted a 12G295 to my 81 mini 998. The exhaust valve seats have been replaced & the engine overhauled by Thomas Classic. I don’t use my left leg very well ‘cos of a problem I have. If it came to needing an automatic gearbox, is replacing the gearbox straightforward or, do I have to obtain an engine/gearbox unit complete?

You will need an auto engine and gearbox as the engine oil ways are different on an auto unfortunately

Great timeing,about to take off my 998 twin carb head for a head gasket water leak.What do you do to clean up head and the pistons.

I don't really clean the pistons, I just use good old brake cleaner on the head

Good compressions, did my head gasket a few miles ago, tappets could do with resetting, would you retorque head studs? (MG metro engine) cheers Keith
