I just did the same comparison and found both have a completely different character, so that you can't actually say one is "better" than the other. The VSC has a "tighter grip" and shines on transient rich programs, the Vari-Mu has a "broader grip" and is great for softer styles...both "hugging" the music their own way if you like ;)

Great walkthrough of these compressors :-) I have the VSC2, and like it a lot. Now I want the Manley... they are so different, but both very musical. The horns example was very telling, widened the stereo image a lot in mid side mode on the Manley. Keep doing these great videos :-)

Both are excellent compressors. I do prefer the Vari-MU in most situations, but given that the VSC-2 is available as a native plugin and is very CPU friendly it's much more cost effective if it's going to be used a lot in a mix.

why are the gr meters on the vertigo more reactive with a lower ratio ? you would think there would be more gain reduction with a higher ratio but the meters are way more active all else being equal the closer you get to the soft knee.

No, they are the same. The UAD version takes less CPU.

The UAD version upsamples and oversamples, you have to do this manually when using the PA version via using 96khz rate and oversampling via Metaplugin. Hence CPU is much better with UAD.

@@RJ1J not true. PA oversamples internally when needed. They are EXACTLY the same plugins, same code, same oversampling...just native has better GUI. .. That is how it is.

The Vertigo VSC2 is still after some Years still my absolute favorite Software Compressor for about anything. The Manley Eq is far better then the Compressor - I would rather see Soft Tube/Tube Tech CL1B go against the Vertigo...

Around 9 mins when you were comparing them, that wasn't a good comparison, you had the attack as fast as it could go on the UAD, but you had the attack as slow as it could go on the Brainworx compressor......those were 2 very different settings.

Fiasco Seven42 minutes ago (edited) You talk way too much for demonstrating a simple tool like a compressor ! The Manley had quite some pumping artifacts in the bass region. And the transients sounded very contricted comparable to cheap free pugins. The MS option is the only thing that saves the Manley from being rated total trash. The term 'm sical' means that the single notes along with it's harmonics are conveyed without obvious disruptions. Simply not the case with the Manley. The VSC-2 sounded more open and musical. The limiting of dynamic range was much more subtle and invisible as if the compressor had a higher gain tolerance or in the digital world more bit depth. In respect to the sonic quality of the harmonics which each hardware unit would usually exhibit - these software plugins are not close to the real thing. When people repeatedly talk about 'warmth' I rather here 'muffle'. But in this case very little colouration seemed to have been imparted. So the term 'warmth' wouldn't even cross my mind. Or otherwise it would have been very unwise to apply 'colour' over a stereo mix, since transparency is one of the mastering obectives. After the careful microphone selection process I wouldn't dare to wipe a sponge over the stero mix.
