How Do I Pick The Right Compressor? [FET, VCA, Opto, Vari-Mu]

Compression is incredibly simple, conceptually. However, in practice, it can be the most frustrating part of the mixing process. Additionally, one compression mistake can ruin what was otherwise a solid mix. In order to fully master the art of compression, we NEED to learn the differences between the four main types (or categories) of compressors. Today, I'll be giving you the basics on the four most common compressors in most studios, which include FET, VCA, Optical (Opto), and Variable Mu (Vari-Mu) compressors, along with what their strengths and weaknesses are. Let's do it!

There's no "dbx style", that's just the company that makes them and both 160 and 165 are VCAs.

Opto is faster. It uses light. If you are just using plugins, all you are using is a FET, due to the computer hardware. RAMs, CPUs, SDs, all made from FETransistors.
