I am curious to see if the exam objectives change for the "SecurityX" vs the current CASP+. I didn't take the CASP+, but instead went the CISSP route since it was a more established and industry recognized certification. The rebrand doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. Only time will tell if it pays off or not.

I honestly don't see any issue with this rebranding. CompTIA already has advanced certs like the Pentest, CySA, and CASP(now the SecurityX). Them adding a few more doesn't seem bad to me...plus they deal with a lot of Government agencies and maybe those agencies are requesting advanced certificates in the place of degrees or other credentials. Also about the price...I agree, who would pay for an advanced cert if you are advanced...but you could apply that thinking to the A+ and Net+...who would pay for it when they are outclassed by the CCNA and Cloud certs...which are cheaper than both and more valuable

Another great video, Zach!! I love all of your videos because you offer real-life, real experience, no BS Advice based on your many, many years of IT and Tech experience. I'm not a big fan of Comptia Certifications because they have lot of pros and cons! I have A+, Network+ and ITIL Certifications from CompTia, and they worked when I first got in. Now, they aren't very useful after 8+ years in IT!! I'm taking a CCNA and AWS course at my local technical college, so my next progression is Network Engineering and Cloud Technologies.

Totally agree, from being an entry level certifier to being a competitor in the big leagues. I believe that this new moment of cybersecurity is a supply/demand business and certifications as well.

While I understand what you're saying, I don't think it's necessarily fair to criticize CompTIA for attempting to compete with other companies in the "expert" level certifications like ISC2. Specifically because ISC2 is competing directly with CompTIA with their new CC certification, and their SSCP which directly takes a shot at Security+ and says its the more advanced version, which is honestly debatable. At the end of the day, I think its just them exploring a new avenue of business. Someday, if CASP+, or I guess SecurityX now, catches on the same way CISSP has, its a success for them. If it doesnt, they'll still always have A+, Network+, and Security+ to fall back on.

CompTIA is supposed to be for 1. who is new and 2. what is new. For 1, it's the A+, N+, S+. . . For what's new it's like when something is hot in the field and people who have been working in the field want a primer on it before jumping into it (right now like cloud and cybersecurity with Cloud+ and CySa/Pentest+ respectively). . . the certs under my number 2, usually disappear with time and have their content being pushed into other certs (for example mobility+ which is now spread out in the A+ and Net+). . . my opinion on the Xpert series. . . it says it's for advanced people, it's more than likely going to be taken by beginner folks (like me) trying to "prove" more advanced level skill despite not having the years required.

This is because you still have HR people and those in charge of hiring and reviewing hiring that still struggles with not having a piece of paper from an "institution" saying yeah, he/she knows what they are doing. Not to mention there have been some people who have been caught "fudging" their resume. And yeah a bit of a money grab. But at the same time I understand your frustration.

CompTIA needs to fix their current certs, exams, and study material so they're lined up and apply to the real world better. I'm trying to get Net+, it's grossly bloated, and the PBQs are messy. No one subnets from memory in the field.

The Network+ was interesting because they mentioned subnetting but very few people, myself included, have seen it in any form on the exam. My complaints about bloat and unnecessary information is with the Security+. It's so broad and has so much information that I struggle to grasp all of the information even with 2+ years of experience and my A+ and Network+

If comptia wants to really compete as a vendor neutral cert provider, they need to provide affordable sandbox learning environments like an acloudguru, cybrary, etc. Otherwise I see no value in a majority of their certifications when there are vendor specific competitors with similar or cheaper priced exams that also provide ways for you to get hands on with the technology.

I dunno man. Honda & Toyota started out being pretty good for entry level generic cars. Then they both expanded their lines. MSSQL Server was the same. Why not for the IT Cert industry too?

Yeah dude, reminds me of all the new "expert" SANS courses that rolled put this year. I'm tired of the money grabs. I love what CompTIA did for 8570, but no one generally cares DoD side outside of Sec+, and CySA+. GCIH and CISSP have a lot more visibility and respect than CASP+ because of everyone who brain dumps that test.

If they continue offering the original high-level-entry-level certs, then I don't see why not introduce other certs. Who knows, maybe they'll be of use. Many people can use them as refreshers. Others may actually learn something new. Education is always a good thing. That being said, I respect your opinion. Looking forward to more discussions on this!

I do like that they are adding more certifications. All businesses are incetivized to make money so to me its not that big of a deal. I will say that im not too big of a fan of the securityx certification. That rebranding to me, seems it will make the names of certifications confusing to myself and also employers.

I genuinely don’t understand why this is anything to be upset about.. let them try to compete in that market. What if they end up putting out a great cert despite being known for entry level certs? What if the cert is useless and nobody cares for it? What does it matter, they clearly have some vision , why not let them try without popping a blood vessel ?

After completing the Google Cybersecurity Professional cert, I wish COMPTIA would do a similar approach. I walked away from that cert with a portfolio, something I didn't even know I needed. I'd pay $50-75 a month for a course that would eventually lead me to a DoD 8570 approved cert. If cybersecurity needs more people, help us break into it from an entry-level, THEN we'll go after the Xtra Xperience. X.X.X.
