Fitting that the Vikings would honor their former QB Fran Tarkenton at this game, since he played for New York also.

1986 was the Giants’s year. Minnesota had a strong team in ‘86, but they came up just short of making the playoffs. This team was the nucleus, though, of the 1987 Vikings team that very nearly went to the Super Bowl.

Giants first trip to the Metrodome and last until 2001, also their only game in Minnesota between 1976 and 2001

This game was huge. Minnesota would have an epic playoff upset of the 49ers the following year. Vikings GM Mike Lynn was one of the NFLs rising front office stars. That roster hadn’t been so stacked with talent since the mid 70s and the Vikes we’re about to take some late 80s runs at the SB. Lynn is most famous for the Herschel Walker trade that built the Dallas dynasty. The Giants are 8-2 at this point, impressive on defense. LT is the league MVP, an award usually given to quarterbacks. Carl Banks, Gary Reasons, Pepper Johnson, George Martin, and Leonard Marshall. The defense was stacked but Simms was struggling. The Redskins were nipping at the Giants heels so a Giant loss here could’ve cost NY the division and maybe Phil Simms his job. Simms was great in 1984 and 85 but was slumping, something the Gmen could not afford if they wanted home field advantage in the playoffs. There was no margin for error so this game was critical for the fortunes of both teams

It looked like the play that Simms was stacked, that he threw a lateral, but I believe that the refs ruled him down..

How can a defense allow a 1st down to occur if you got 4th down and 17? Playing conservative, prevent defense, that's how. The bane of NFL football. Give me a D-Coordinator with some guts, there! Yet, this B.S. philosophy has kept teams from winning for several decades. There's absolutely no logic. Browns did the same thing with Denver in 1986 AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. Knew it was gonna happen! Elway had been mediocre entire game, but given ample time to throw medium route passes over the middle, Elway carved Browns secondary like a Thanksgiving Day Butterball!

So true. I could see that drive unfolding almost like it was inevitable. Prevent- Defense is a way to lose, time after time.
