I read My 1st Conan story "Red Nails" when I was 12 back in 1973 and was HOOKED, I Still have Every Comic, Savage Sword, and All the Paperbacks , was Disappointed with Decamp and Carter's stories but read them because Hey, It's Conan and have Every One, Conan was the Start of one of the Greatest Literary Genres Ever, Sword and Sorcery!

Robert Jordan actually wrote a Conan story if I remember correctly long before the Wheel of Time and it was actually pretty good. But no one has ever bested the originals. I have the unabridged compendium and still read it all the time. Nobody described sword play as well as REH…

Arnold’s Conan film doesn’t “dumb down” the character imo. He is a flawed character that tried, and sometimes failed, to survive in his chaotic world. But I think Arnold’s presence and acting, yes I said acting 😆, were good in Conan the the Barbarian.

Still, it's not exactly the Conan we know from Howard's stories. Good, but different. I think it's almost impossible to properly convey the poetic, ethereal and often mystical feel of the original Conan stories on the screen without some type of advanced animation (computer or otherwise) and it would be a project that would have to be driven by someone who not only loves these stories but would also have the care, time and patience to bring it to fruition. This is something that is unlikely to happen since it would entail financial risk on the part of those producing it. After all, unfortunately, money is the bottom line. For now, read the stories and imagine the visuals in your own mind --- because we ourselves are the creators of the greatest films never made.

It was the one character in Schwarzenegger's career that fit his persona best and he did a great job. Though I can't help but feel that the definitive Howard Conan is yet to be made. We likely agree on one thing though --- that second movie in the series was nowhere near as good and would be best forgotten.

The Frank Frazzeta cover art was a huge pull factor with the 60's/70's rebirth. He deserves lot's of credit in this. I'd urge anybody to read all of Howards stuff though, it is violent, exciting and flat out fantasy/adventure gold. The modern "Del Rey" reissues are high quality (the best actually) and reasonably priced.

I love the stories of Conan the barbarian both in the novels, comics and movies. I don't think Arnold Schwarzenegger ever portrayed Conan as being dumb. He portray him as being silent, thoughtful at times brooding but with a sense of humor. I wouldn't say that JRR Tolkien's stories weren't dark either. He just portrays his characters with hope and faith despite the odds. But both are inspiring.

Never having gotten to read the original stories of Conan by Howard, I had only the tweaked versions by de Camp and Carter, but I LOVED them! De Camp's style always appealed to me, especially with his own work, but we have him and Carter to thank for reviving Conan in the 60s. Otherwise, he might have faded into pulp oblivion.

I'm glad they did reprint the originals, because they provide a revived perspective on Howard's creativity and style. There was a book published on the centennial of Howard's birth (I believe) some years ago compiling his poetry. Man, I would pay *blood* to have a copy of that! Too bad they didn't print more copies, more's the pity.

The world of Conqnn does indeed exist its just in another dimension. Howard felt that he didn't even have to think when he wrote the stories, it's like he was surveying Conans adventures and was writing what he witnessed.. maybe some individuals can experience other realities in some ,msterious way which they then pass on what they feel in the form of writing. It's not another dimension. Cimmerians were real people who lived in scythia who were the ancestors of the gaels in Irish myth. Atlantis was next to Iberia according to plato, Iberia is where the sons of Míl came from (pregaels)so Howard simply was re telling a tribal story. Conan is a real fomorian prince who was slain by the sons of nemed as well, his god was Crom Cruach, who is the Irish version of Chronos, because the Tuatha Danaan (tribe of Dan and the pre inhabitants of Ireland) came from Greece after learning necromancy. All of this is easily researchable. Why was Conans god Chronos? Because the time god has always been associated with hardship, trial, and overcoming. Nobody goes to Crom's foot to worship, they go to slay him or to be slain by him

Up until the mid 1980s I had all the copies of anything Conan I could find. I was such a huge fan and family, despite my age, use to get me whatever they came across including the back and white comics and copies of the movies that Arnold starred in. Unfortunately during the Christmas season our home caught fire from faulty wiring while we were out and about and came home to an inferno, and fortunately we tried to save some pets but was too late for most and some had to be put down on the scene having been horrifically burned. My hands and lungs got burned as i tried to help save some of the pets which was a couple of cockatiel that were a mated pair for about 11 years, some parakeets, some farm cats and a couple of dogs. I stopped collecting things after that. I also avoided having any pets of my own if I could help it. Still love the genre and it inspired me to actually learn about real history and actual ancient cultures and not all the ancient aliens new age type bullshit we are inundated with now.

The Arnold movie was a great insight too how brutal the world is because the ending isn’t happy Conan still has to deal with mental scars of his past trauma Even when he sits on the throne at the ending credits he’s not happy too be king it’s like he’s reflecting on good times before they were shattered.

What's interesting is that his King Kull stories came before Conan. So when Howard wrote the first Conan story, he had figured out that readers wanted more action and adventure, and less philosophizing. Conan essentially started out as a revised version of King Kull.

The 90s film, Kull the Conqueror was supposed to be a sequel to the 80s Conan films, but it developed into something different; though I know that Kull was a separate and original character in Howard's Barbarian universe.

The main problem with the movie was that Conan lost his heritage by being sent into slavery at a young age by Thusa doom, who is actually from the king kull characters of the age before, in Atlantis Howard repeatedly throughout the stories, talked about how Conan could scale a sheer wall how Conan was at the battle with the Aalon at 15 years old when the barbarians quote came swarming out of the hills, and put every last man to the sword“ the movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Conan deserves a Lord of the Rings commitment to film if it's to be taken seriously. I think 5 films would do it. The 1st four work up to his kingship and ends w/ that. They movies can only be based on Howard's original stories,.. . blending them together. The world of Conan is falsely portrayed in filmdom. Filmmakers need to think of the different "kingdoms" of Hyboria as more advanced than the normal depiction. Guilds and cults and "religious" organizations are not based on sad ancient tomes. They are full blown technical experts based on far-fetched, magical and technological knowledge. The art of war has advanced technology to a heightened state. Blacksmiths are not lone musclemen working village anvils. They are a powerful guild filled with many practitioners, journeymen and experts with division of labor including miners, designers, foundrymen and tool experts, including hand cranked and mechanical lathes powered by water and wind. It is a land filled with varied and complex languages that are more akin to each other than today's languages. Languages steeped in deeper philosophical learning because they have access to highly advanced technology, science and supernatural elements. Elements not based on fantasy but on fact. Imagine certain sects posessed knowledge of electricity that was not based on chemicals and dynamos that modern science is familiar with, but on materials, Geometries, "batteries" and "spells" unlike anything known today. One must imagine Conan being trained by the masters of the Thieves' Guild to recognize traps and artifacts of these esoteric technologies. Imagine Conan a less academic Indiana Jones. Part student, soldier, spy, thief, mercenary, rogue filled with primitive instincts and lusts and spurred by an ancient fate that directs his progress, with no ambition but to live well and satiate his appetites. If it be to die then so be it.

DeCamp was good in his own right. He explored some ideas. Carter was very imitative but descriptive. His Thongor was a rip-off of Kull and Jondar of Callisto was a rip-off of Burrough's John Carter. But both still very readable little adventures. Howard's masterpieces might be his boxing stories. His imagery of the in-the-ring experience is intense.

Saying that it is believed Robert Howard created the sword and sorcery Jandra leaves La Mort DA Author out of history and Malory lived around 1470 according to Google, long before Robert Ervin Howard (January 22, 1906 - June 11, 1936) lived and died. And there is Three Musketeers is a French historical adventure novel written in 1844 by French author Alexandre Dumas. Robert may have had a hand in reviving the jandra, but not in creating it.

Now that i think about it i guess indian, egyptian and chinese mythologies are even older and they full of sorcery, fighting und superhuman beings as well as monsters! The first written scriptures are from the Sumerians and their Gilgamesh-tale could be the first sword & sorcery tale (although they believed it actually happened). I never understood the criticism of Arnold's portrayal. He wasn't as agile as Conan from the books. Robert E. Howard was a fantastic writer, one of my favourites, and Conan is one of his greatest characters. The "Conan the Barbarian" films are horrible. The character depicted in the films is NOT Robert E. Howard's Conan, and those silly movies are an affront to R.E.H.'s creation. As a true Robert E. Howard devotee, I'm proud to say that I despise Hollywood's version of "Conan". The strange, sad trend of a lot of these Robert E Howard literary retrospective videos on KZbin seems to be this idea that they can elevate the status of Howards work and his legacy by dumping on the 1982 John Milius film LoL. Stephan King is not a fan of Howards work and much of the academic literary world tends to agree with him. Most academics sneer at "pulp fiction" ( then genre, not the movie ) in general . The truth is,.that outside of Tolkien, its mighty difficult to find serious literary support for fantasy as critics view the whole genre in almost the same way as they view comic books. The 82 Milius film might have more respect among cinephiles and film critics then howards work has among book snobs, and it was practically nearly THE standard bearer for the 'Sword & Sorcery " film genre, until, ironically, Peter Jackson adapted.....

Absolutely agree with you. You're a REAL Conan fan. Why someone would choose to watch the movie when they could spend two hours reading one of Howard's "Conan" stories baffles me to no end. The figure played by Schwarzenegger in "Conan the Barbarian" is not Conan! They should have just named the film, "The Barbarian", because Robert E. Howard's "Conan" is altogether absent in that piece-of-crap film. Ron Cobb, the movie's production designer, even once said, "Our strength in making this film is that we know nothing about the literary 'Conan'."

It doesn’t have to be placed in the timeline of our world.. it’s all feel. Howard was a master of suggestion and mood. He evoked the primal and the sensory.. the use of a few terms from our mythologies was a way to place it in an alternative space and time but keep us rooted in something just familiar enough.

Conan is dull and boring, Kull is way better and more interesting. It's weird Howard wrote Kull before Conan, yet Kull is much more intellectual and sophisticated work.

Not really. The Hyborean Age was a mashup by a fantasist of different historical periods with wildly varying technological capabilities. Most of the fantasists that compiled the Bible were living in the Bronze Age and the level of civilization and technology in those stories usually reflected that historical period only.
