Dr. G I have a quick concentration question. I am a baton twirler/dancer/ breakdancer all in one and whenever I perform or compete, a lot of the time I feel like I’m in my hind brain. And I feel like I am so concentrated, that I lose normal sense of self like you talk about, and I am totally in the zone. My question is, is this the right place to be in? Or should I focus on seeing feeling and reacting? Because lets say that for some reason I didn’t do a great job of concentrating pre-performance, and I go into the performance a little tight. Because I am so in the zone, I feel like I’m not even aware of what I’m concentrating on because it is all happening so fast. And maybe because of this, even though I’m technically in my hind brain I might stay tight. Should I work on being aware of if I’m seeing, feeling, and reacting or should I stay the way I am where once I start performing I am just in the zone and not even aware. I know this question might be a little confusing, so please let me know If you need me to clarify anything. I am a big fan of your work and would appreciate any insight you have!

If you are beginning to perform and feeling the tightness that comes from nerves, then you are not in your Hind Brain or the zone. The zone is a very relaxed place where you have an exquisite awareness of what you're doing and what's going on around you in that moment, but you are not distracted by any of it. It is a relaxed place and a product of having a one point focus. You are totally in the experience, seeing, reading and reacting and this is not something that you need to think about or try to force on yourself. It is a "let it happen" skill, not a "make it happen" one! You should work on where your focus goes pre-performance because nerves are usually generated before the performance begins. They are a product of having the wrong focus before you begin!

@@TheCompetitivedge Thanks for the reply! That makes a lot of sense, and a lot of times I feel like I am there. However, I remember you talking about swimmers and where their focus should be (on the feel of how much water they are pulling), and I was potentially concerned that I am not focusing on technically anything when I perform. But it sounds like that I am focusing on seeing, reading, and reacting it’s just that its happening automatically, as I am in the trust and let it happen mindset (as long as I don’t have expectations).
