Setting spool tension is usually for new baitcaster users or unless you have a million rods and reels all tuned into different lures. Once you get more experienced and use different styles of casting, you turn the spool tension to the point where there's barely any wiggle on the spool (basically off) and use only the magnetic brakes as your braking system. This allows way further casting with minimal effort and you can change fishing lures and styles without constantly adjusting the spool knob. It also trains your thumb so that at the slightest misstep you automatically stop the spool. Eliminates a lot of backlashes when you hit shrubs and twigs near you.

jonny jones As far as performance goes, it depends on the model of Steez but they will be vary comparable. The main difference is the smoothness, longevity, comfort and weight difference. I have a Steez A already and a Steez 103L on the way. Compared to my Shimano Chronarchs, the performance is about the same but I just prefer the overall experience with the Steez reels. Ergonomics is a big factor in reels for me so I tend to gravitate towards my Steez reels just because of how "comfy" they are when fishing.

Do you like dual-brake system reels? I had a Lew's Tournament MB with dual braking and it is my least favorite brake system. Super finicky in my experience... I much prefer pure centrifugal (Shimano SVS Infinity, Lew's ACB, etc.) or Daiwa's Magforce V/Z systems. For $200 I feel like the Concept Z would have benefited from a higher tier braking system.

David Mann I do. I never use the centrifugal brakes and only use the magnetic adjustment. I find the centrifugal brake reels are harder to fine tune. I must add that I fish for hybrid stripers and make back to back long casts so I’m only interested in casting any given lure as far as I can.

I use this baitcaster specifically for flukes. It casts like a dream compared to other baitcasters that I have. The tension knob does come loose every once in a while.

The concept reel I want, but don’t have $$$ is the Concept TXZ. It’s got that bushing system that is recessed and some good bearings that give more casting distance and better performance as a good salt water reel

When you set the spool tension for the bearings you had to shake the rod to get it to fall. If you would have loosened it up to what you had the bushings, you might have gotten farther. But it just goes to show you how well marketing works!

There are some sapphire zirconia bushings cost about 50 dollars a piece that we have built reels with and they will flat outcast any bearing so long as you aren't trying to cast the lightest lure possible.. I have a couple Megabass/Daiwa Monoblocks that are running the sapphire bushings that I use for bombing big lipless traps, glide baits and other baits that are 3/4oz to 2oz on 7'10 big sticks and they will out cast distance wise the longest casting bearings that are dry so they are at their lowest friction and the sapphire bushings will out cast them by 10 to 15% so long as you got the thumb to handle spools that fast with minimum braking... If your running faster spool bearings and you have to increase the braking to handle the spool you totally defeat the purpose and likely would get more performance with a slower bearing and lower braking settings... A loose spool tension and (on Daiwa) a mag force setting of 1.5 to 3 max and the sapphire spool bushing will out cast the freest bearings in distance without a doubt.... I sell the sapphire bushings as well as all TG Rocket, Hedgehog studios, ZPI and Bassart bearings in all models from Stainless 7s to Full ceramic 9s in Daiwa and Shimano bass reel sizes.

Hedge hog studios 7s and 9s are really fantastic super low start up inertia bearings. Without a doubt the longest distence casting bearings are TG Rocket stainless 7s (they will out cast the TG Rocket ceramic Hybrids in distance, the hybrids will cast lighter lures slightly better but distance the SS 7s are best.) ZPI Hybrid 9s are fantastic bearings in shallow spool reels casting light lures. Depends on the reels use what spool bearings it gets. My Pixys get ZPI Hybrid 9s, my Steezs with Megabass Wiffle spools get the same... My Steez 100s or TDZ 100M will get TG rocket SS 7s.. My Zillions with TDZ 100m spools gets the Rocket 7s as well.. It's all about what you want thr reel to do... If im looking to rip a 3/4oz lip less a mile its rocket 7s..... If the reel is a pitching reel it's 100% gonna have ZPI hybrids...

An excellent video very interesting. what are the bushings made from are they phosphor bronze? One thing which I will ask is on is the running of dry bearings and why you decided not to lube them after a clean. The oil in the bearings is designed to reduce friction which then also reduces heat. Metal on metal will wear a lot quicker, also the ball bearings will expand due to heat. Im not knocking your test as it was very well executed. Im just querying your decision to run dry bearings? They will not last anywhere near as long as a correctly lubed bearing. Apart from that, thank you for doing the test. Maybe you could test greased against ungreased? Excellent video though, always interested in mods that improve performance.

Considering the fact that you were able to cast farther with bushings than ball bearings, I guess it's a win situation for the costumer, don't you think? I mean, you can get a nice cast and no problems about corrosion, for saltwater anglers, such as myself, I think that's a good thing, i just don't know if this bushings are gonna last. By the way 13fishing got the idea from Gary Dybons and my self to run the bushings..... Because we made so stupid long casting old lews speed spools (the original speed spool) that with 12lb mono on a 7'11 med parabolic cranking stick i had that speed spool and a couple more tuned and with the sapphire bushings was capable of casting 1oz deep cranks out close to 300 feet... We with the wind we wax breaking 300 feet from time to time but a normal hard cast was getting 260 to 270 feet and was a huge advantage because we could get plugs deeper then anyone else and stay on the strike zone much longer because we could out cast them by 100 to 130 feet consistently. Bass masters mag did an article on The 100 yard cast.. With a 8foot cranking stick and a 1oz deep diver could we tune a reel to cast a 100 yards... We did it, the AVG cast was 280 feet and we would break 100y/300 feet on about 1 out of 5 casts. I tuned a Daiwa T3 1016, on a custom 8 foot Gary Dobyons rod that he built for us to do the article on the 100y cast... My company tuned the reel and I did some tuning to the Mag force 3D and the inductor cup on the spool.. The sapphire bushings is what made it possible along with my reel tuning and braking system tuning but without the bushings it would Have been impossible. The article is back in 2015 when the T3 1016 had just been released at Icast... Check it out its a interesting article you will see me and my company in the article, I was the one doing the casting in the Pic as no one else had the thumb capable of handling 50,000rpm start up spool speeds... On a hard cast on a reel with quality spool bearings the start up spool speeds normally are 28 to 32k..we was between 50 and 55k on that T3 1016. Still have both of the T3s from that article to this day.

2 bigs issues with 13 fishing + czb. I have a TX2, a Curado 71XG and a REVO STX gen3 so you know I could compare. First TX2 has a big structural fitting issue, when mounting on 2 rods and tightened, it wasn't flat mounted and had a 1m gap between the front mounting and the back, not a proble for all my reels but not for the 13 fishing, when tightened it made noise and wasn't sturning smoothly, it stopped a lil half on each turn, very disapointing. Secondly on this subject, those beerings worked very well.. for 1 session.. then noise and vibration and moreover DAMN SHORT casting distance.. Didn't understand the problem then I took a wave on face so reel had water on it and.. distance came back as if it was new ! But only for 20 minutes then short casting again.. I notices 2 things: I had to lube those CZB stupid beerings so it works fine as new every session (non sens cause it's supposed to be WITHOUT lube) and I noticed a litle play on one beering.. the reel has 5 days fishing.... I guess I'll jsut buy ceramic beering and get over with this CZB sh*t. My 2 cents

Did those bearings come out of the origin C? That’s very disappointing that the bearing was only 2 feet away. You should try putting the concept z bearings in the origin to see if it’s the brakes on the z that are low quality or if the new bushings are poopy.

Didn’t you have ghat 2nd “wobbly” bearing on the wrong side? Yeeessss lol. I think the long side takes a different size that the palm side, which should have replaced. Don’t know how you cast, but I’m terribly happy with mine. I hardly ever pick up my curado or revo since getting it. It’s a different beast. You can actually give it a little more tuning and get better

I’d like to know why the reel cost so much money? It has plastic bushings and decent ball bearings in a reel seem to be one of the factors in the price point.

Jimmy theses aren’t just plastic bushings. As you see in the video they perform about the same as decent bearings. Thus, in salt water the concept z makes a lot of sense since they will never rust or corrode and last a lot longer than regular bearings. I have a concept z and in the cold the bushings absolutely suck. They must shrink and make the reel cast way shorter. I had to buy spool speed bearings. I definitely wish I got a different 13 fishing reel (their reels are good). Lucky I got a good deal on the z.

BOSS HOGG I used it for the first time yesterday and it does cast further than my $50 baitcasters. The durability is still in question but so far it’s a very nice baitcaster for $100. Yes, for $100. I wouldn’t have paid $200 just because of the plastic feel to it and I am a budget fisherman.
