This video is 21 in the Free Online Glaze Course on this Channel. (Self- directed) It covers Concepts in Glaze Thickness and Application. Determining glaze slop thickness in the bucket with specific gravity or just my eye. Then it covers viscosity using a Zahn Cup. This is shown by measuring viscosity of a water, a glaze, a deflocculated glaze and a flocculated glaze. Then the most important thing is how thick the glaze is on your pottery and that is determined several ways, a needle tool to check, a optical loop, or a micrometer. Finally getting the correct thickness can also be achieved by determining gram per square inch. So that is shown samples. Enjoy. Had a slight glitch toward the end and had to move the camera.

Hey John, I've learned so much from your channel. You're one of the only people on here that cover it the way I want it covered. Like school. I don't need the 3 minute demonstrations that leave me asking so many questions in the comments. As a thank you, I've purchased one of your Mino Shino cups from Etsy. I'll proudly use it alongside my own favorite pots I've made. Once again, thank you.

I just signed on to your channel on a recommendation by my Aunt and I'm so glad I did. Thank you for such a great and more in depth lesson on glazes and the differences in the things that can change them. The visual references are very helpful as well. I can't wait to watch more of your videos. I live in very far north of British Columbia Canada and I'm learning on my own. For the last 3 years I've been delving into pottery and just started to feel more comfortable with my knowledge and am leaning towards making my own glazes more. I have made 2 so far but I felt the need to learn exactly what does what so I can control them to the best of my ability. :)

Hey John this is Jeff you probably recognize me by all the email I sent about the crazy blue clay LOL any rate I have a question does pH ever become a factor with glazes and if so how do we deal with that?. I am an organic chemist I'm a very amateur basis so I have a lot of access to chemicals and I've actually learned how to create many compounds over the years whether that will ever help me or not I really don't know I have been thinking about using some lead carbonate for some chandelier pieces that I've wanted to make nobody will ever touch them and I have a very good exhaust system but at any rate that's beside the whole point I was just wondering if PH ever comes into play if there's ever a reason to check and water would a highly out of wack PH due to a glaze if anything? Thank you for these videos they're really so valuable I learn more every time I rewatch 1 it's helped me a great deal in this art. Really seriously I can't thank you enough you single handedly advanced my skills immensely

Ph is usually discussed as flocculated (acid) or deflocculated glazes (base)

Great video. About the 1gram per square inch. Is the 4 inch to 4 inch the size of the bisque tile? Or calculated to have it 4 inch to 4 after shrinkage for the glaze firing?

Cordialement
