I personally love the huge concert tom sound, especially the Bill Stevenson sound which is a 16 inch rack tom and a 20 inch floor tom.

I've heard them sound great, I usually just can't quite find what I want. I've played a full Rogers concert tom kit that was pretty incredible, and that had a 14" and 15".

I like them both, but the double headed toms definitely sound fuller and fatter and smoother, with a bit longer sustain. I made myself a concert tom kit by taking the lugs off some of my extra toms ( i have way too many drums ) and filling the holes by gluing pieces of wooden dowels in the holes, sanded & painted, put new remo cs black dot heads cuz i like the look. I got 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, rack toms & 16, 18 inch floortoms

Plenty to play with there! I'd probably go 8/10/12 concert toms, but the larger ones as standard!

Peart used concerts on his left and double heads for the rest which definitely worked beautifully for him. That obviously referred to his thousand tom kits from early.. ergonomically his later moutain climb kits were, in my opinion, more ergonomically better.

Yeah, having a mix is definitely best I reckon. I'd been on the hunt for a loose 10" Pearl Phenolic, so I can mix 2 in with the big Tama, but one hasn't popped up!

I recently converted to a pseudo concert toms setup by replacing the reso heads with mesh heads. This way I can still use the reso hoops to keep everything tightened down to prevent lug rattle and protect the bearing edges to easily convert back if I choose. I also installed internal mics into all my toms and kick using a mixture of Gibraltar internal bass drum mic mounts, Randy May AVC-1C and AVC-2C internal non drill audio vent mic connectors, and Audix D2, D4, and D6 mics. So far I'm loving it! I've always enjoyed the Phil Collins gated reverb drum sound and I can now get that at gigs with my sound guy dialing it in. My band mates tell me it's the best sounding version of my kit they've ever heard
@THHDReviews
@THHDReviews 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, if you don't have a proper concert tom kit it's good to protect those edges, and the mesh heads would interfere less than cutting wide holes in the bottom head, which I've also seen! Haha

Some drums get a better sound with no resonant head. On my old Pearl Forum kit I did this to the 12" tom only, and was able to tune it a bit higher without nasty overtones, and it also removed a ton of sympathetic snare wire rattle. It really comes down to the sound you want too, I like higher toms to be punchier with very quick decay, the mid toms to have the longest decay, and standing floor toms thunderous, but with a shorter decay.
@THHDReviews
@THHDReviews 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's great finding that sweet spot for any drum. 12" toms are a great size for concert toms in general, I just need to find a matching (with the Pearl) 10" for my kit! Haha

i think in order to get a good concert tom sound, they really need to be cranked up
@THHDReviews

It certainly feels that way, and it's so conflicting for me when I'm always trying to get the most depth out of my drums!

Concert toms are not as versatile as standard two headed toms but under the right circumstances they can be really effective. They use them in orchestras and marching bands because they project. But in a rock context they can sound really cool too.They definitely have a unique sound that some people either love or hate. The trick with micing them is to put the mic inside the drum shell aimed up at the head. Since there's no bottom head you lose all the sympathetic resonance it provides the top head. So if you mic them off the rim like you would a double headed tom they're going to sound too thin. With concert toms the sound you want is inside the shell. That's where all the punch is. You get a richer sound too.
@THHDReviews
@THHDReviews 10 ай бұрын
Good point, and I was tempted to mic inside the shell, but went with this approach for consistency. It's definitely all down to preference, and it's good to have multiple ways of approaching a sound. In the end, I can see why people hate them, but I've heard plenty of rubbish drum sounds with regular toms too! Haha

Sorry,but I PREFER the sounds of Concert-toms!!! I LOVE the hollow-sounding and longer sounding response from them! True,there not as precise as two-headed drums are,and they also don't have that ear-shattering high-pitched sustain that roto-toms have,so I'd say they are nicely in between both sound-spectrums of each! My kit has all 3 in them. The 2-headed,a few concert-toms with some smaller roto-toms and they all sound amazing when rightly tuned to what your playing! : >)
@THHDReviews
@THHDReviews 10 ай бұрын
Sounds like quite a versatile setup, I'd go with anything up to a 12, but anything bigger it'd be 2 headed. I'll have to get a set of Rotos one day!

My kit IS a very versatile setup and Yes,many drummers either Love or Hate concert toms,and a few Love them but only up to a certain size! But I enjoy all of mine and Roto-toms have the same "feeling" with them as well! You either LOVE them or HATE them! Lol. But to ME,their an extremely versatile drum and they tune within a snap of a finger! So Yes,I encourage You to sit down to some Roto's and do a video on that,as I and many more,would Love to see You playing those! :>) @@THHDReviews

I've had them before, and what I've got is basically the Remo version on the playing side (Powerstroke Pro), but I love the classic felt strip for the front. I try to keep internal dampening to a minimum..
