Great Video,thanks! I grew up in Ft Wayne Indiana,and one of my drum instructors from the percussion center,built Neil Pearts early drum kits- Chromey,and added the Pearl “Vibrafibe” process where fiberglass was sprayed onto the inside of a wooden drumkit. Pearl had the original complete line of drums called the “Wood Fiberglass “kits,which my mom would buy for me in 76-77,for Xmas one year- I was considered a child prodigy at the time,so I played them 5 hours a day and lived the sound! You can see Neil wearing Percussion Center tshirts in many early photos of the band,and this drum shop would spray any drumkit with this thin layer of fiberglass over the inside of the shell. Eventually,Pearl would (I think),acquire the process and trademark it. You could buy Pearl Fiberglass Toms,Pearl a wood - Fiberglass drums,and Pearl Wood drums too.

Thanks for the feedback Jonathan! I know of the Vibrafibe process and that drum shop! My concert toms are fiberglass only … Pearl made them in the mid 70s. Since this video I have every size except the 5.5x6” tom … I working on getting that tom someday soon. I loved this old fiberglass drums. I took the wrap off because the wrap shrunk and ripped, but the drums sound great. I have many videos playing this kit!

Peter Criss is the guy who made Pearl Drums famous. On the Destroyer tour he had 6" to 22" fiberglas toms. The floor toms were like bass drums on floor Tom legs. The drums were covered in a 3d honeycomb wrap. He had a marching snare with the same wrap. He always had some of the coolest looking kits of the 70s with custom finishes. He inspired a lot of kids to play drums.

Tony Mann .... thanks for your feedback! Yes, Peter Criss had a wonderful Pearl Fiberglass Concert Tom Kit ... it used to drive me nuts that he played it like he was playing a four piece kit! So it was all show and no chops! But that was Peter’s playing style! I have grown to love this kit and I have decided to keep it for now! I use it occasionally and it has a certain vibe that two headed drums don’t have! Thanks for watching! 👍🏻🤟🏻✌🏻

Hey Earl, I'm just getting into Hal Blaine, watching interviews etc...didn't know he was on so many recordings that I know! thank you for sharing your knowledge in this video. I noticed Joey Waronker (who you mentioned) plays a similar type of setup too. I've played with a no reso bass drum head here in Korea at the winter olympics a few years ago and the manager got mad at me cuz it looked ugly...but the sound was so immediate and great. I've struggled with reso heads on toms AND bass drum heads. if i had it my way I'd go to every gig and take off resos in situations where it'd work! this video is gold for a history nut like me, thanks Earl.

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement Spiro! There is a long list of drummers that like that single headed kick drum sound! You should try cutting a 12” hole in the center of the front bass drum head. It will give you a sound close to no reso head! Don’t forget the pillow! 👍🏻🤘🏻🙏🏻

Can't find a picture of it but in 1924 Leedy already has a set (10, 12, 14, 16) of shallow, single headed Tom A Phones. In the late 1950s Ludwig builds the Nite-Life Cocktail Kit with single headed tom-toms.
@earldrum2 жыл бұрын
I’m sure drum historians will find versions of concert toms before Hal Blaine. The idea for the monster drum kit was inspired by Hal’s timbale drum kit when he could get that de tuned dip in the tom sound. But really took 7 single headed toms from 6” - 15” and created melodic tom kit. Then he played on hundreds of songs many number hits! Thanks for watching Robert!

Mine have bottom rims, and a small strip of aluminum on the outside.The bass drum is 14x22 and was made with a front head. I still have all the original Slingerland branded heads. I played a set of blue Sonor concert toms in the 70's. They were the Sonor phonic drums. However, my Sonor's never had the pitch bend you're talking about, but they were loud. I think in general concert toms are louder than toms with bottom heads. I'm thinking of buying a set of Pearl's new acrylic concert toms. I'm your age too, and I still like a larger set. Here's some history for you. I saw an old Gomer Pyle show from the 60's where he was singing with a band and the drummer had concert toms. The set had what looked like a 10 inch mounted tom and a 14 inch floor tom with legs that was a concert tom. The floor tom didn't just have the bottom head taken off. I've also seen a set of Sonor drums from the early 50's with concert toms, including a floor tom that was a concert tom. I like the whole idea of concert toms: no bottom heads to buy or tune, lighter weight because of less hardware, set up easier with no bottom heads. Maybe they will come back.
@earldrum5 жыл бұрын
david lanier ... thank you for watching! Sonor made some beautiful drums and there concert toms had those beautiful beech wood drum shells! Concert toms were around before huge monster kit, but having 7 or 8 toms was the brain child of Hal Blaine and his drum tech. I think concert toms are coming back, but not to the degree they became a standard for drummer in the late 70s / early 80s. I appreciate you taking time to share your story!

Earl, it's me again - we just corresponded about your rotos video...I happened to see this video on my YT browsing tour...great discussion on the subject...good ol' Hal Blaine (real name was Harold Simon Belsky)...he died after your video was posted (March 2019)...he also drummed for The 5th Dimension (particularly on their '67 award-winning hit, Up, Up, and Away)...he was the one who coined the moniker, "The Wrecking Crew" (Glen Campbell, Carol Kaye, Leon Russell, etc.) because he thought the newer 60s house band would "wreck" the music industry with their rock & roll influence...on to other points in your video...I agree with your comment on Danny Seraphine...every Chicago member contributed to their distinct sound - but Seraphine's chops (jazz-influenced) were memorable and prominent in the sound mix (including his bridges in Make Me Smile and Beginnings - which I made a point of copying when I played those songs)...I had read that he was kicked out (due to being sloppy in his playing??)...I don't recall hearing Tris in Chicago - but as you basically stated, no disrespect to him as a drummer...as for Nigel Olsson, I remember his deep/long drums, and I think he called his company Drumork...his time with Elton (along with Dee Murray and Davey Johnstone) have a special place in my own drumming upbringing...I'm self-taught - and after using an old kitchen seat as my pre-kit to play songs from (e.g.) the Jackson 5 - my earlier learning on my first kit (December '73) included imitating Nigel's arrangement on music from the '73 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album (particularly Funeral for a Friend)...at a later point, Grey Seal became another favorite to me - and Nigel's fill/bridge after the 2nd verse (into the chorus) hits me to the core (kudos to Gus Dudgeon and/or the mixer)...Elton's decision to change his band after his Captain Fantastic (ATBDC) album somewhat throws me - especially since his decision was made after that album (with that classic line-up) served as a culmination point to get him on the July '75 Time Magazine cover!...I recall Nigel wearing gloves when he played...regarding concert toms, (on my acoustic kit) I had 10, 12, and 13 racks - and, to be consistent, I went bottomless on my 14 rack, 16 floor, and 24 bass/kick (hey, I would not have wanted to obscure that custom pillow stuffer)...I did have an 18 floor, but it seemed superfluous for a 7-piece kit...still, so as not to waste a bottomless 18 floor, it was assigned as a container for unused drum stuff (All drums serve a purpose!)...OK, you need a break from my War and Peace commentary...thanks for your patience...you get me talking about music and drumming, and the "off" button may be applied too late...🥁🙂...again, great talk...
@earldrum3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing David ... you covered a lot of ground. I’m a huge Hal Blaine follower! DANNY is my main influence as a young drummer and Nigel became an incredible influence as I learned less is more! Thanks for sharing you story! I talk a lot on camera about mine! ✌🏻🤘🏻🙏🏻

@@earldrum You're welcome...Danny and Nigel now have at least 2 fans... I know, I'm talkative...aside from my love of music and drumming, I'm a lover of history...I graduated from Villanova ('82) as a History major [but some years afterwards I returned to school to get a nutrition-related degree from Drexel, ('89)]...but history still fascinates me - dates, historical origins/timelines...history involves a contextual aspect...sloppy 60s drumming and music altogether BELONGS to the 60s (and I have a theory about a reason for the sloppy drumming)...one of my 'druthers is to be a time traveller (if it were physically possible)...when I play Vivaldi's Four Seasons, the time is ~1725...by the way, with your darker hair in this video (and your overall appearance/manner), you somewhat reminded me of Jack Weston (The Four Seasons, Short Circuit 2)...blessings...

Re Steve Gadd and putting bottom heads on his Pearl fiberglass shells; in Jonathan Mover’s Drumhead interview with Rick Marotta, Rick said that he was the first to do that. He said he turned Steve on to it. That made 10” drums with 2 heads a thing.
@earldrum4 жыл бұрын
Nick Costa ... Steve and Rick are best buddies, so if it was Rick first great. I knew they both did it a long time before the Drumhead article. Rick and Gadd talk about those drums in their earliest Modern Drummer articles. But I will tell you that the guys that worked at Frank Ipolitto’s Pro Percussion in NYC told me Steve Gadd made the 10” tom famous because that was what they tried to sell me when I bought my Gretsch kit 1979. Gotta say that it was Vinny Appice that first turned me on to the idea of concert toms, way back when he was a member of Dio. As well as his incredible chops, it was his tone - all thanks to the concert toms. I actually remember removing all the bottom heads from my first ever 'kit (although when i bought it in late '83 it did actually come with a pair of stand mounted Maxwin (Pearl) concert toms - 6" & 8" i think), back in '84, such was Vinny's impression on me. What is your take on head choice for a set of Ludwig Vistalite concert toms? I am currently using pinstripes but thinking about changing them out to the black dots. Sound wise l think they could sound better with a head change.
@earldrum Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching A! The black dots definitely have a cool sound … more focused! I haven’t used them on concert toms for years. I have been digging the pinstripe heads, but clear ambassador or emperors also sound great. If you want a lively sound the CS heads and Ambassador heads are more open, the pinstripes seem the perfect mix of lively and dead, and the emperors are very phat sound. When I had my Vistalite drums the CS / black dot heads looked really cool! I hope it helps!

Man I have to tell you the story about meeting Carmine Appice, he was playing with Rod Stewart in the late 70's, a concert in Wellington, NZ. Carmine gave a clinic on the day of the show (remember this was in the days when clinics were practically unheard of), but he was doing them back then, he walked into the drum shop (by himself), there were about 4 kits set up on the shop 'floor', he picked a white Ludwig, grabbed a stick with his left hand, a brush with his right and played a 'Bossa', (remember this was when he was regarded as one of the top ROCK drummers around) and he's playing and 'singing' The Girl from Ipanema... very cool..
@earldrum6 жыл бұрын
Churr Doii Drumma ...awesome story. I never met Carmine, but I know he was huge influenced by jazz guys like Buddy Rich and Joe Morello. Yes, I remember clinics were a lot less tech show more teaching and playing on a simple kit. Great memory! Thanks for sharing!

Dating myself here, I remember going to an Emerson Lake & Palmer concert in the late 70’s. Carl Palmer had a huge kit with concert toms. What’s noteworthy about the kit was shape of the rack toms. From the batter head down, the shell curved to face the audience, reminiscent of a traditional shepherd’s horn. Certainly made an impression on me, I’ve not seen another kit like that. Wonder if anyone else has seen wild variations like that.
@earldrum5 жыл бұрын
David, thanks for watching! Carl Palmer’s kit was extremely unique. It was stainless steel, it was permanently mounted on a rack. The whole kit move together on and off the truck by a forklift. It weighed 2000 pounds! Ringo Starr owned the kit until a few years ago. Carl also had other concert toms! Thanks for your question!

Im glad i still have them , they really are quite rare now and the Rogers set wouldnt look any different that any set today. what head do you recommend? mine came with revo black dots and i see that alot but do other head types work just as well? why does everyone go black dot on them? thanks!!!!!!!

Hi HotRod, I do a question show called Ask Earl Anything …. I will answer this question on camera in February 2023. The short answer is that was the “new head”:used in the early 70s when the concert tom kits became popular! I use pinstripe heads on my concert tom kit now, but you have choices. I use that kit often, so check out a few videos and see if you like that Pinstripe sound?
@hotrodtiki200 Жыл бұрын

I guess the pinstripe heads were added later to remove the overtones? The pinstripes worked well when kits that were made with cheap shells (like the 80's Pearl Exports). But as the quality of the shells on lower end kits have gotten much better, I don't see pinstripes being used nearly as much.
@earldrum2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback my friend! I have used clear ambassador, clear emperors, coated emperors and pinstripe heads. They all have there sweet spot. Two ply heads last longer … one of my considerations not having a drum head endorsement! I bought the pinstripe heads for my Gretsch kit and decided to put them on the concert tom kit instead. To be honest I like the sound I’m getting for now! But it will change someday. But I agree with your analysis. Thanks for watching!

Geez, I don't know how I missed all your videos? They really are awesome. I'm maybe 15 years or so younger than you, so I'll have to go back, and check out some of your influences. I like the sound of those concert toms. They say necessity is the mother of invention, but seems like the concert toms was possibly created out of laziness, or perhaps the need for space??? About 10 years ago, I played in a Police tribute band.. I didn't take the reso heads off, or use the "Octa's", but rather used LP mini timbolis, but because the heads broke so easy, I threw some pinstripes on em, an they sound great. "100 vids, and 6 bucks" you're on your way lol. I'm glad I discovered your vids! And btw, that opening groove sounded much like a Bernard Purdie groove. A great compliment! Also agree, the older I get, the less gear I can get away with the better.

I moved to Houston for years, and except when some of the guys came to town for shows, I slowly lost touch. It wasn't that they were just amazing drummers, but really good guys, and fun "hangs" ,a key to getting the gigs they got. My father lives near by in Florida now. I was then able to pack them into 2 cases protected by plastic bags, as the large kick and the 18" were made single headed. So it was 10", 14", 18" (F/T) inside a tom case. Then 8",12",16" toms, 22"(kick, inside the kick drum case. As they were heavier. I then mounted casters on a base board on the cases. Worked for me. Just turned up at a venue an rolled the kit in..

The foam caught fire, and within two minutes the entire club was in flames, killing hundreds. I'm not trying to tell you what to do by any means, but if it's not flame retardant, you may want to reconsider. It also gives off poisonous black smoke when it burns. I won't post the link, but you can google it. Be safe!
