Releasing a 5v5 hero shooter with a $40 price tag in a market where all of its competitors are free was a really bone headed move. If they go forward with Marathon also having a $40 price tag, they have learned nothing. If I was Sony I'd be taking plenty of notes from concord so I can avoid a failure of that size going forward.

Destiny 2 is way more successful than anything live service Ubi has ever made, and is one of the most successful live service games of all time. Not to mention that Bungie gunplay is one of the best shooting mechanics ever crafted. Halo, Destiny all have insanely popular gunplay and that mechanic is now able to go into any future PS game.

They have great IP they could make successful live service games with. Killzone, SOCOM, and Resistance are just a few. The problem is they are targeting this "modern audience", that doesn't exist. Another problem with trend chasing, is that games are now taking up to ten years to make, and the trend will probably have passed after that decade. Also, by the time anyone’s new battle royale game comes out, a bulk of the fanbase will have bought hundreds of dollars in the game they spent years on. The new game needs to be something really special, if they want players to abandon those purchases.

Agreed, I think the biggest mistake to me whether we are talking playstation or xbox is not listening to the general player sentiment early enough or hiding the game thinking that will somehow change a potentially negative perception. I think devs should just do what bg3 clearly showed is the way to go. Launch in early access and iteratively improve your game and expand based on the early player feedback, then launch more widely in an official launch highlighting the intensity you included player feedback and that you will continue to do so post-launch. Players will both appreciate that you listen and also be much more forgiving of issues along the way so long as you are working to fix or retweek them.

@@DevinPosey20 i get what you are saying!!! the playing numbers were pretty dismall off late until they ran the celebration event for some armour and weapon which brought a good size number back but again they will have a drop off of players. they obviously need to make some engaging content but all players really want in live service games of this type is some new maps and enemies but cool free stuff to earn in game and that will keep players engaged!! Lets hope they continue as its a good game

I think if you are making any type of pvp game you need to have community servers, I like to see how a dev sets the table but they need to make the game and then hand it off to players. Players decide what lives and dies in gaming and the best way to make sure something does well is give over control to the player base

As one of them, there is a large segment of gamers who will actively avoid all games that intentionally propagandize to the player. It’s a bigger segment than you think. Sux because the actual mechanics look great - it’s copied from Bungie after-all. But they shoe-horned it into a clone type of game PvP shooter. If this had been exactly what it looked like - a character / class based looter shooter, a fun parody of the characters of Guardians of the Galaxy, and added a story with space travel adventure, and well-written comedy, it could have done so much more. After all, that’s all anyone wanted from Destiny - a fkn story, IN the game and not in grimoire cards. This project should have been Borderlands 2 with better graphics and better shooting mechanics, taking jabs a major movie franchise (GOTG).

Not that I'm necessarily rooting for Marathon, as Bungie's remaining good faith has largely gone up in flames...but I will say, from what I've been observing, that Marathon SEEMS like it's still in enough flux that it could potentially change course in some ways to take on some feedback. But we'll have to see. Concord is now in the past, and the post-mortems have been ongoing. Whereas Marathon hasn't even had an alpha or public playtest. Just private screenings and NDA tests not to wide swaths of players. Marathon might still have time to fix itself.
