Another enjoyable video to watch. It speaks volumes about the relationships you have with your suppliers that they are so accommodating in changing delivery dates for the concrete and hire equipment. Well done. I enjoyed the Q & A at the end. Your prioritising of the garage ahead of the house is spot on as theft from new build/renovation sites is a real issue. It also gives valuable storage and prep space for future work. You might want to consider including Q & A from time to time in future videos. In the meantime, do have a very happy and restful Christmas and thank you for all your work in producing the videos throughout the past year. Hope you get that much needed break in the weather.

I was also surprised with the suppliers but they said they are used to it with concrete pours. And yes, our exact thoughts on the garage - I cannot wait to lock everything away inside (including Julie) 🤣

If the gravel supplier was worried about getting a truck stuck, I'm sure you're aware a loaded concrete truck is even heavier. And with your rains, make sure the ground is very solid - dig out any wet spots and place some gravel. Getting a truck stuck with a full load is the stuff of nightmares. I'm highly impressed you are tackling a finished slab of that size with just the two of you - it's usually a 3-4 person job with a skilled crew. Yes, it can be done, but it will be a long day (make sure you have some night lights just in case). 30cm slab is indeed overkill for a residential garage, especially with the reinforcement you're using. 15cm is more reasonable. Are you going to use a concrete cure compound? If the weather's cool, consider asking the concrete plant about using an accerator admix since you'll be placing in the afternoon - will speed up the set time so you can use the power trowel. If it's cool, you could be well into evening before the concrete sets up enough. Good luck. Happy Holidays.

We put in extra gravel and it did not sink - all was OK, although he washed it out at the top of the drive and made it a little boggy 👍🏻

I would price out a well and have it as a second source of water. Use the "city" water for the house ect and the well for the garden/property and have it set up to be able to shut off "city" water and run off of the well just in case. Merry Christmas to you both as well.

Wells are not very common here, but we will be using a lot of rain water recovery as we do already with the IBCs but I want to bury a large tank too. Water here is very reliable though, plenty of it in the mountains and only around €150 per year.

Thanks for the little update, good luck with the slab. I noticed on a different channel that they used the same concrete blocks as you for wall construction but didn’t use any mortar 🤔. They used the rebar as you did and filled with concrete as well. Just thought it was interesting. What grade of concrete do they specify for the slab. Great video.
@HomesteadingUncontained2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure of the grade - I just told them what it was for and they will send it. The wall is pretty solid and we will soon put a concrete cap on it.
@solarfunction18472 жыл бұрын
I wonder if you could use a tarp on top of some poles in an A shape to keep the area completely dry for concreting so that you can even get the concrete poured on a rainy day?
@HomesteadingUncontained2 жыл бұрын
That would be the way to go but it would need quite big structure and the wind can whip up on site. Saying that there is a circus tent in the next village...🤣

Hello from Michigan in the States, I'm sure you have been asked a hundred times this, but when you finally get you Container home built, and finished, will you keep your farm land down the road or will you move everything to this property and bring your horse and his little house, that way you can do everything at this property. Love your channel and all your adventures. Keep up the great content and Merry Christmas and a happy New Year 2023!!!!
@HomesteadingUncontained2 жыл бұрын
So the plan is to move all the veggies garden and the horse up to the new site. if I get my way with some new animals we may keep this field for grass and winter hay. It all depends the path we follow with the homestead and possible animal rearing ...

In all my years working concrete, I never saw anyone cover up the pour area with a tarp......you see, even the Romans knew that concrete pushes water away. As the concrete comes in the water is pushed out of the pour area and it will find all the little holes and run away. One for any future pours.....the big problem with rain is the kind of finish you can get.....lots of little dents in the concrete doesn't look nice. But say you do an indoor pour and water comes in through the doorway. don't worry. They were right....better build 'Victorian' style.....here in Poland they think I'm mad for the thickness of concrete I do......But I always estimate for heavier vehicles. I've seen so many people put in driveways, then comes time to move....and they back the removal van onto the drive and the drive cracks up, breaks pipes under the ground....etc etc....Build strong, no later worries.with deliveries by truck....you do good strong concrete pads and you can build retaining/internal walls on them at a later date because they are strong enough to be considered footings. From Eastern Poland Wesolych Swiat.
@HomesteadingUncontained2 жыл бұрын
I know, I know but I just didn't want anything that could go wrong like floods of water to greet us on the day. Yes, the thicker slab will probably do me well. Plus then I have to put in a load of extra concrete for my drainage system and paths.
