To those wondering if the original mother was a released pet- is it possible? Technically, yes. But what are the odds that A) an albino hognose would escape and manage to find food and shelter (mortality of escaped pets, even relocated wild snakes, is about 50/50), avoid predators without camouflage or experience, and B) Relocate many miles to a natural (and quite separated from humans) population of hognoses. The odds of that all happening just seem very unlikely. In addition, albinism in animals is one of the most common (though still rare) mutations seen in the animal kingdom. Not all albino animals are in captivity 😊 Wild specimens is actually where most captive-kept morphs originate. And finally, the babies from this line have a different look to them than other albinos (even the "normals" look different). I'm noticing it more and more with each shed- it reminds me of the Arctic gene actually! They're gorgeous and I can't wait to see how they develop over time 😊

but how is this line any different to any other albino hognose? what gene is it? You should make a genetic test and compare it to other albinos.

I wish so many people weren't being so annoying about this. I'm sure the people who purchase these snakes will be told more info on the origin of Jeffina. I don't think Ed and Emily would make claims, without heavy disclaimers, if they weren't sure about something. Just because they aren't putting all the info in a video doesn't mean they don't know.

To clarify since I understand this now Jeffina, a wild albino has a NEW Bloodline (not new strain as that’s technically the wrong terminology) of the albino gene which means that she is not nearly as inbred or line bred as captive albino snakes, this means her babies are less likely to have defects caused by line breeding which will help out the hognoses breeders tremendously as it won’t just help albinos but all morphs that need albino to be created
@stinkertonsden Жыл бұрын
I have to say watching the videos and the channel go from "Yay we have a new logo" to "Yay we produced more snakes to introduce an alternate gene into the entirely of the breeding pool/population" has been an absolute joy. The amount of time and energy Emily and Ed have invested, and the pay off not only they, but the reptile community as a whole has received is an underrated beacon of hope during some very tumultuous years. Thank you so much for everything you do and for just bringing joy and positivity into the world even when some stupid person decides they want to steal the registers.
@Littlewings1211 Жыл бұрын
This isn't a new gene as far as they know, it's just a new bloodline. It's still an albino that's mutated from the wild type, the same as every other albino but this one isn't from the same family tree so to speak. So instead of inbreeding with older or younger generations of the same line, which all descended from the one original wild caught albino, this is the same mutation, (albino), but from a completely different original wild caught albino. To try and explain it better, if you ignore all the genetic and health issues that come from inbreeding in humans and the moral aspect of it there is one original wild caught albino human who is your great, great, great, great, great, great+ grandmother. To get to you in the genetic line instead of members of your ancestry finding partners in the wild (world) as we do now, imagine that to create new albino humans your great+ grandma was bred to one of her male children. Then to another of her male children. The resulting babies grew up and are bred to the original, your grandma, or one of her offspring and so on until we get to you. All of your family would be entirely descended from that one person, the original great+ grandma. Now, after many years of the only albinos being your family you suddenly come across a guy in the wild who is also albino BUT he's not descended from your family at all. He's still an albino but he doesn't come from years of breeding one family member to another and is no relation to you. That's Jeffina 2's mom. So they're taking Jeffina 2's mom as the equivalent of your great+ grandma. They both have the same genetic mutation that causes the albino look but aren't blood related in any way. This means that there is another bloodline which can be line bred like the original (your family, in this example, was,) or it can be mixed into your bloodline where you know it will still create albino babies, but half of their DNA will not be your bloodline - like it is normally in humans half your DNA is from your great+ grandma's line, but the other half comes from a new bloodline because your parents aren't blood relatives. You're all still human, and in this example all still albino, but there are now two genetic branches of your family tree instead of it being a long line. I hope that makes sense? Hopefully it helps clear up a little confusion. It's definitely a very in-depth, scientific topic.

I’ve always had a really severe snake phobia - like, I’m talking immediate panic attacks when I see them. But watching this channel has helped SO much to educate myself about them so they’re not so scary. Thank you for educating about these funky creatures! ☺️

Same here, I had a traumatic experience when I was 3. My dad was an animal remover and recovered a hognose house from someone's house. It was injured so he brought it home to rehab it and it laid eggs. The eggs hatched and when my mom got home with me she saw all the babies and freaked and ran to the pay phone, yes I'm pre cellular lol, to tell my dad. The problem was when she left she forgot me in the house all alone. I was good with snakes up until then but after I wouldn't even touch a page of a book that had a snake picture on it. As an adult I don't like things controlling me due to fear so I face fears head on to overcome them. Snake Discovery helped me overcome this fear and I adore snakes now, even to the point that as much as I would love to own one I'm pretty sure it would outlast me and I wouldn't want to confuse a snake with a new owner after I'm gone.

OMG I'M CHOKING Monika. lol! I'm sorry for laughing at your traumatic experience but when I got to the "The problem was when she left, she forgot me in the house all alone". As a mama this really made me snort hard cause can see the double panic in her mind when she realized what she had done lol. I hope in time you can look back at that memory with some humor and less terror.

I did too, but Ed & Emily and a few other people have showed me just how AMAZING snakes and other reptiles are. My friend had a corn snake, I was afraid of it, but soon was able to hold it and it would lay across my shoulders and would literally just chill there or fall asleep while we played games. I personally want a couple bull snakes and some bearded dragons, maybe eventually a smaller tortoise and if I can, a couple rhino iguanas. ❤Take care!

My son also wants a bull snake so I thought I'd raise some for him and sell the others or find good homes for them, may raise some ball pythons as well. Someday.

While I've always adored snakes, I was at this level of phobia for spiders before Emily and Ed started doing spider videos- nearly broke a laptop once when I dropped/threw it because there was a picture of a spider I wasn't expecting. It helped even more when they admitted that they got the one (first, I believe, the one they named Grace) tarantula to help overcome their own fears. They've got this way of getting these animals into your hearts :)

Jeffina² is def a pretty albino. Colors don't always pick up correctly on the camera, but she's very pale. Most albinos look more yellow or orange, she looks like a frosted yellow. Gonna be interesting to see ya'll play with her genetics over time, maybe even see some grandbabies produce to look at differences. Maybe pair her to an albino male, and another albino female to the same male, then compare the two clutches to see if you can pick out any noticably different-looking albinos? Either way, gonna be interesting to see future clutches!

@karen_3 Жыл бұрын
how are they so sure that she was wild and not an escaped or released pet?
@slytheringingerwitch Жыл бұрын
@@karen_3 I have no idea. I mean if the likelihood is that an albino snake could not possibly survive in the wild, then it has to logically be another reason. Unless she was found in an area that meant her albinism was an advantage then sadly it is more likely that she was an escaped pet. But as we can't ask her, then we won't really know for certain. Did Jeffina behave like a wild snake? I feel that this is still an interesting story.
@willothewisp2980 Жыл бұрын
@@karen_3 I mean, think about it. How well do you think a pet that has been fed frozen thawed mice its whole life will survive in the wild where their actual natural prey is not supposed to be mice? It's more likely to just be a wild albino, especially because it's a native species and abundant
@matthewmusco2581 Жыл бұрын
@@willothewisp2980improbable doesn’t mean impossible. in the same sense that it’s improbably that an albino snake survived till adulthood I think it’s also just as unlikely that it was a released snake that survived. That’s why people wanna know and it’d be nice if SD could just give us an answer
