This phenomenon is an optical illusion called Stroboscopic effect

Yup. Its an interesting effect, where adjusting the camera fps/or the slight speed of the motor, can make it appear spinning forward, backwards, or even standing still. Old timey mechanics used to adjust ignition timing by it. Kids these days :)

But you can make them go backwards if you put the wrong motor in , CC vs CCW and how it's wired ? But in reality I have not had a issue with any motor running opposite direction of the condenser coil it's still getting fresh air , right ,?

Kinda reminds us of an old western movie when the wheels on a stage coach looked like they were turning backwards. Its an optical illusion.
@johnmeore21534 жыл бұрын
It has to do with the shutter speed and the frames per second of the camera. A video camera works just like a regular camera, only captures images at 24, 30, 60 or 120 frames per second and plays them back at around 29 FPS. If you play with the settings on your camera, the rotation will change.

Man my capacitor went out on a Sunday and I found out at 8:30 at night. It’s simple to give it a push start but my fan will rotate backward if you push it that way. I spent 4 hours trying to figure out which way it should spin. All you find is counter or clockwise varies depending on your motor. The simplest answer is air should blow out the top and suck through the coils. I’m glad I found this video

Question for you.. why do they do that? I’m working on a few of these. The ones that have universal replacement motors shoot out the sides and the oems shoot straight up. The only thing I can see is the replacement motors are taller, even with the blades as close to the motor as they can be, still sits about an inch lower . Is it fan blade placement or something else?

I encountered into a Goodman unit today fan running backwards. Purple and brown wires were wired as depicted in the ladder diagram. I pulled the disconnect, reversed the purple and brown wires and then it pulled air through the sides and out the top correctly. Wires are obviously reversed in the motor from the factory. Power on the building isn't out of phase, compressor is running in the correct direction. Ordered a new warranty motor so some other tech doesn't come along correct the wiring on the flux Capacitor and send it back in time.

I've been doing commercial refrigeration for years, I've got my own business now, definitely seen plenty. I have heard of techs (self reporting) single phase motors running backwards. I've never seen this and electrically speaking I don't even see how it's possible outside of rewiring the windings inside. Switching both the 120v legs on a contactor does not reverse the direction. I've heard people claim this can be achieved by mis-wiring the capacitor, but the wires to the cap are the same wire. Can't really mess that up...

I'm late to this video... but... Lots of comment in here that call people "idiots". YES if all they do is look at a video and determine "just by looking" that the fan is "apparently" running backwards, then they could use a reality check like "stop/start the fan", or "test the air flow direction". Fact is, that if the startup capacitor of the motor is defective, that fan CAN and WILL randomly start in the wrong direction, and suck air in from the top, instead of discharging it. So don't be fooled by the video optical illusion, but also don't be fooled by someone saying that the fan can NEVER run backwards. That wouldn't make you an IDIOT anyway, perhaps just inexperienced on this particular issue. Otherwise, we'd *ALL* be called idiots on issues that we are less familiar with. BE NICE!

Your repeated mentioning that the air was pushing out from the side of the condenser, was the natural reason for people to think the fan must be pushing downwards instead of pulling upwards. It is the only logical conclusion any reasonable person would reach. Why did you describe the air was pushing out of the side of the condenser that wouldn’t happen in a normal fan situation? Could it be a illusion or just a simple misspoken thing?

I have question not related to the video. Have you ever seen diy job done by a homeowner that was actually good?

Brother you are a real good guy. You have a lot more patients for fools than I do. I wouldn't waste my time with fools like those. I have been in this industry since I was 19 and I am now 65. These young fools are just " Parts Replacers " Most of them probably couldn't carry your tool pouch. You get the same illusion from tires when you film a car moving. Dumb asses. Be well and stay safe.
