So glad they turned out good after what happened to them. The same thing happened to me with my 875s. Luckily I was able to fix those. I only use the leather cream on my 875s now. Like the natural patina and aging of the leather. So I won't use anything else on them.

Vinegar works great for drawing out salt staining if it comes back after they dry. From the cleaning.

I’m not a big fan of the Red Wing wedge soles they use in their heritage moc-toe because they wear down so fast on concrete. But, I had have a pair of the Oro Iron Ranger on that wedge sole. They are the most comfortable Iron Rangers I have. They had zero break-in time. I think they did some things differently with how they are made, especially to the tongue. It truly lies flat.

Unfortunately the Oro Iron Ranger with the wedge sole is made with a ton of synthetics! So sad. Makes me want to spend a little more money to move to another brand. Truly unfortunate that Red Wing is heading in this direction more and more.

Those soles are like bowling shoe soles. My Rovers came with the same soles. Now I replaced with Vibram Christy soles and appreciate the improvement.

Still envious of you and the 2940. I missed the boat the last time they popped up. But if I were resoling I'd definitely aim for Traction Tred. As for conditioning you get more of an even coat with the leather cream with the towel. It was the right choice. If you are ever in need of leather laces if you can't source them from Red Wing Guarded Goods has been amazingly solid for me. They occasionally get laces built out of Horween or Wickett and Craig Latigo, and have a wide variety of colors. They could make for a decent review on the channel if you ever want to try them out.

@@CJCook Cool! I might have to check Instagram or Reddit for that version. I've been trying to source some 8830's which are about as close as I could get to Copper Rough and Tough 8"ers these days. You're welcome for the tip and may it treat you well! You must have caught it just as I edited it. I have a pair in their leather laces going strong in constant use 2-3 times a week and a year later. I probably should condition them instead of waiting for them to snap. Thanks for reminding me!

@@CJCook Thanks, reminds me of the way Nick's are constructed. You basically linked an extinct dream model for me since it would be so practical for what I do for a living. But much appreciated CJ! 👍 Of all models why they don't have the 4572 as a staple even in Oro Legacy is beyond me! It would make a lot more sense leather lined with a traction tred sole. I think if you could get them with a leather midsole, put a 3 ribbed shank in for stability, and then put a full Gro-Cord sole they'd look amazing!

Hey CJ! Good looking boots! Quick question…I just back my 9011’s from RW from a resole. the stitching on welt on the vamp area seems close to the edge (the new stitching) you can see the old holes on welt from original stitching. Does really bother me aesthetically, just concerned that stitching will get worn away. Have you experienced this on a resole? Hope all is well!

I’ve had the hardest time with the fit of Red Wings. They scanned my foot in the store and I’m 10.8 D on my left and 11 E on my right. The store suggested going with a 10.5 D for both my 1907’s and 877’s and the right boot seems to be too small. I tried a pair of 875’s in the 11’s but they felt too lose. What’s your experience in the Moc Toe fit?

Oh man that is rough. The moc toes are narrow. I can fit in a D width. I do get some rubbing on my pinky toes until the leather breaks. The E width feels better and breaks in much easier. You should try placing an insert in the 11s for a better fit.

Would you recommend Mink oil or not? I had a pair of Camel Active that when using Mink oil it appeared to damage the welt.

Lexol is pretty good as well
