My first impressions and review of the Condor Bushlore. As far as I can tell, this knife meets all the requirements for the Pathfinder School.

Nice job. The Bushlore isn't my favorite but it does what it was meant to do. I call it the "Poor Man's Genesis". I usually suggest the Mora Bushcraft Black for people wanting to practice on a budget, or the Bushlore if they want a more traditional type knife.

PREPAREDMIND101 Thats a good way to put it. I think the Condor would hold up to battoning better than the Black, but thats pure speculation.

I carried my bushlore to the pathfinder pioneer class and I was able to do anything and everything required with it. I did carry a diamond rod and used it frequently during down time but it wasn't always required I just wanted to make sure I always had a good sharp edge at all times. Thanks for the great review Larry.

Hey Larry. The condor woodlaw is the simplest and most ergonomic knife handle Ive tried. Stupid simple and feels good no matter how you hold it. Just my opinion. Thanks for the vid....tell Raf, Ryan, Zack and Briggs I said Hi.

Awesome review man, that knife is tough! I'm no pro at making feather sticks, but what works for me is to tip the blade down and slice the feathers instead of forcing the blade straight down. Works different for everybody though, just thought it's worth a try.

@LarryRobertsbc 9 жыл бұрын
Country Prepper Your right about the feather sticking technique. I find it depends on the knife mostly and a little on the wood. In my vid @watch?v=37uvl0AnSqc I actually show this method to Stephen (the big guy in the white tee shirt). Thanks!

***** Hey Larry thanks for taking the time to do a first impressions video and beating up the Condor bushlore . I was lucky enough to be given one of these knifes for Christmas and I'm looking forward to using it. I mainly use a mora robust and found that very good. As for handles I have big hands and I like a big handle to get a grip off so my farther years ago showed me about using thin wet strips of leather to bind the handle to the right size works we'll give it a go. Hey Larry, I was turned onto your channel from justin wolfe, and I'm really impressed with what you're doing!! A big thanks for your videos man! They are real and informative. My 2cents on the bushlore is its a great knife! The 1075 is a lot harder than I expected, but it doesn't chip like harder steels. I ended up putting a convex edge on mine, and its a monster!! The convex radius edge made it a complete tank! It's my go to if I'm going to get rough with a knife. Love the videos.. And the series.

Larry,like your videos. Got wind of you through Justin Wolfe and glad I did. I don't own the Genesis but have seen many excellent reviews on all Wright knives but when you mentioned the handle I thought I should mention that you really should try out the Spyderco Bushcraft UK. Awesome handle that is larger. Many have said its the best handle they have ever held. I can almost guarantee that it may even surpass the Genesis in comfort. They spent years perfecting its design. Not cheap though.

I've always lean towards the softer steels 'cause I can keep them super sharp a lot easier. They don't last as long but I always touch them up often and have no trouble. I carried a Bushlore for the entire year of 2013. It is a fine knife, for sure. Another knife you should consider is the Mora High Q Robust...nice thick handle, sharpens easily, is tough as hell and cheap as dirt. Great video, sir.

I bought a Bushlore not long after watching your review awhile back and I love it ..... BUT I feel the same way the grip is just to small. Unfortunately I'm to poor to buy a custom knife at the moment but I will keep searching for that big grip that I need;) The LT knives look awesome and rating a budget knife must be hard after using quality blades like that so it says alot about Condor's Bushlore. Mine strops right back to life after a good hard use, I got it for 27$ on ebay so heck ya cant beat that. Thanks for such a great review and taking time out of your life I know making review vids really can be a pain.

It is so hard to decide when it comes to knives. I just came home from Atlanta from The Blade Show, and being there was such a great experience cause of the exposure to so many different knives. You almost have to handle them to know if they will work for you. Thanks for watching! When and if you can, try out a Genesis with liners in the handle, I think you'll like it.

Great review Larry! I have had the Bushlore as my primary knife for almost a year now. Some of the things i have done are carve spoons, baton regularly, bow drill sets, feather sticks, skin rabbit, pheasant and a squirrel.. Just to name a few. That knife will do EVERYTHING that a decent blade will do, as well as most expensive knives. Yes i agree the retention isnt amazing, but regular honing sorts that. The spine digs into ferro rods like nothing else!! The only issue i have had is that it cant be used to get a decent spark from flint.. It will spark, but not well. Thats easily solved by just carrying a striker, i believe in task specific tools anyway. Soak the handle in olive oil and it gives it a much darker colour, and keep me updated on how you do with it sir. Cheers, Jack
@LarryRobertsbc
@LarryRobertsbc 9 жыл бұрын
Jack McCormack I don't do the flint test often with my knives, but I did it with this one. It made two solid embers within 5 min. I'll have to suck it up and try this with my more expensive knives and see how they do.

Personally i'd rather not beat my knife spine with flint. It makes it less effective as a ferro rod striker in places if you do! Cheerd, Jack

Maybe I won't beat the knife I was thinking of then. With the rough edges from the flint I thought it would make a better striker for my ferro rod.

Great review on a great knife. I think the Condor gets dissed by a lot of people because of it's low cost. I have used mine a year or so and love it. For sharpening I just use a sanding pad with 220 and 600 grit sand paper, and finish it with 1000

Great review brother, I have the same complaint about knife grips just not enough palm swell to fill the hand. I like that Bushlore and was undecided but I think your vid pushed me to go for it, I have a small budget and it should fill that need for me. I just bought a Schrade schf52 and the handle is way to thin for such a big blade but all the reviews seemed OK on that point. Maybe I should have bought the Schf9 cause everyone complained about the huge palm swell LOL maybe you should check the Schf 9 out. Anyways subscribed and its cool having your daughter in your vid, no way would I trust mine with a baton ;)

Larry, I've got nothing but respect for your Honest Reviews. Thanks for that. This is a knife that I'd have no problem owning. I carry a few expensive knives on me as my EDC from day to day. When I'm out in the woods, I like knives I can beat on and can take it. I'm not going to beat on my Spyderco or Benchmade knives but, this may find a way in my Pack to replace my Mora. My Mora has been good to me don't get me wrong....it just wish it had some weight.

Shane Coffey Thanks very much for that. Now, before you ditch your mora for this knife...I should have said this in my vid, but this knife is light. Awesomeness!!!!! Loving the beard brother!!!!! Praying for your thumb to heal fast buddy. I sent my Bushlore back to Condor because my knife wldnt hold a edge long enough to carve a spoon but Im glad you got a good one. And why you Baton is to get to the dry center wood without the risk of loosing a toe from a axe and yes its a good test as well. But if all you had on you lost in the rainy woods was a knife and needed to get dry wood from the center of a oak log this knife wld help lol. Thumbs up brother. Get better asap.
@LarryRobertsbc
@LarryRobertsbc 9 жыл бұрын
John Kenneally Oh, your absolutely right about the battoning to get the dry wood inside, plus for a bow drill or any controlled split. I just meant I normally would only do it to a softer wood. I can't really see a reason to do it to a piece of oak in the woods. Lots of folks have been saying I got a good one, they must really have quality control issues.
@bigfootbushcraft7063

O ok buddy got you now lol. But yeah ***** my bushlore was so bad I sent it back and didnt want a replacement. I took it on a 2 day outing and I took just that and a bigger blade and I had to have sharpened that thing 6 times in 2 days. Not strop not touch up I mean took chips and rolls out after a few minutes of normal carving. I had big hopes for that knife. Being a huge Mears fan and can't afford his blade I was so stoked to have a replica for a great price but man I was so heart broken after a few minutes of using it and wishing I brang my moras. Thats why I take a pack of blade now on every trip because I now know what it feels like when your blade feels you and you didnt bring a backup. Never again!!!! Lol

Hecks yeah after the weekend I literally took so much metal off the knife it was almost time to re-profile it. Im all for cheap I dnt ever knock anything because its not the real woodlore or anything like that, like I said I was very happy I had kinda the same blade as Ray but when my $8 mora 511 holds a edge all weekend with a few strops it really makes a $40 knife look like a ripoff lol and a guy just said in a Condor post the other day the sheath even tho its very good leather the thread is crap and his sheath is falling apart so just keep an eye on yours *****

Great video Larry. I think you hit all the important parts that you were able. And I agree, I think at this point, and from just watching the vid, the handle and type of steel are the only major issues. for the price, it seems to be a good tier 2 blade. Again, if I was to form an opinion solely on watching this video.

Feral Woodcraft Not my #1 choice, but one I'd give a kid that I was teaching or as a loaner blade. I actually liked the handle even though it was a tad small for my taste.

Great handle, awesome size, great sheath, low price, but I found the edge retention of the steel awful. I've had 2 bushlores (I got one for free), and recently the Condor Hudson Bay (gift exchange), and I always had to take em to the stone for hours fixing the edge everytime I used em for a few hours.. I'm done with Condor knives and I'm done with 1075. I wish they would improve the quality control of the steel because everything else is right on! Right off the box my bushlore didn't even have an ''okay'' spine to strike a ferro rod. My second bushlore was way better at striking the ferro rod. I think they have some quality control issues. I'd stick to Mora for low cost and for something more reliable. If I had done 10% of what you just did with my Hudson bay or bushlore the edge would have been totally destroyed, chipped, bent, etc. Looks like you got a good one! Cheers! Pat

Boreal Bushcraft Canada One of the few times I ever got lucky with a product I guess. Normally if it can go wrong for me it usually does. lol I've been hearing that they have control issues from lots of folks. Why can't they just go with 1095? It can't be that much more expensive?

This is kinda my "beat up knife", in my field dressing bag. This knife splits a Deers sternum ( using a baton) with ease. To split kindling near the wood stove it's great also. For fine work I have difficulty- probably my fault - I sharpen it after every use because IMO the edge doesn't hold well. Great Vid's thanks

Very good review - thank you, Larry! But to bring it to the point right at the beginning: It´s not possible to compare the Bushlore with other knives who have a price of more than 200 bucks! Is there a reason to buy a Mora or a Hultafors? If we would really would do a competition of these different knives - all the expensive ones would lost! If the Bushlore is doing 99% of a Benchmade, a LTW, a Spyderco, a Jacklore or a BHK for 25% of the costs - there is no need to buy another one! If you take care a little bit this knife will stay with you for the rest of your life. There is only one real reason why I would buy a knife from small company is to support these nice people and to enjoy the perfection of their craftsmanship! That´s it! But to go out in the woods and to work with a knife, just for fun - the Bushlore would be a perfect choice! And if you would need a real survival knife - than you have to forget all these Scandi grinded knives and you have to look to something different!
@LarryRobertsbc

I wouldn't say that the Bushlore can do 99% of what an LT knife can do, but I get your point for sure.

I've always heard great "out the box" comments on this knife. I haven't seen a follow-up review a year later of it being the one knife a person used to do everything. I had bad luck with a Condor (Rodan).Some folks will say "it's a good knife for the money", that's not my standard. My standard is "I'd bet my life on this knife". I'm going to go through all the budget blades this Spring (including this Condor and the internet-famed Schrades that I have YET to see anyone do a real field test on and follow up as well). But Larry, your test is the first one that I've seen that makes it look good and from what I understand, today's Bushlore is not yesterday's Condors. Still, I'm not feelin' that 1075. Again, only long term testing and wearing down and honing and wearing down and honing and wearing down over and over and over again is going to reveal how "good" a knife because they almost all come out of the box in tip-top shape. Good review.

@LarryRobertsbc

PREPAREDMIND101 I'm not sure if this comment is for me, but I'll take a stab at it. Lots of folks dis the "review" that is like what I just did cause I didn't use it for a year or two before posting. I think I beat the crap out of it, but like any product to fully appreciate it you have to use it for more than a weekend to give a 100% review. I am in the fortunate spot of having lots of knives and the unfortunate spot of not having the time to fully test them all for years at a time. I did the best I could with the time I had, but I will be carrying this knife more and testing it further.

***** No, it was for the guy that still hasn't seen a "real" test of a Schrade. I'm completely onboard with a First Impressions review. I tried to make them more common. It's a better version of the dreaded unboxing video. It makes a better graph of information over time. If people can't grasp that it's a first impression review when you say so, that's their problem. If a knife just feels right and you can immediately take it out and do tasks you are used to doing, isn't that pertinent information? I think so! I laugh when I see comments like "I won't review a knife unless I've used it for 6 months". It's comical. I understand maybe not wanting to RECOMMEND with your full support a knife until it's been proven... and that's if it's COMPLETELY new. But people with knife knowledge and experience handling many types of blades...you know steels and you know grinds... you know manufacturer reputations... those people are frankly more qualified to make that kind of educated assessment. I personally think this 6-month-badge-of-honor stuff started because someone famous probably said it first. I'm all for First Impressions reviews (with first use). Followed later on after more use. What I've found is viewer are a big help. Then you can look at a LOT more experiential data. Maybe YOU got a good one but 10 other people got a bad one? Worth reporting? I think so. Forget "Rules" and do what feels right. If someone doesn't like it, they just need to learn to let go. Brush it off and go on to something or someone that better fits their rigid standards. You cannot and WILL NOT please everyone, so always do what feels right and stick to it.

Another thing: its a Bushlore. It's been around a while. There are LOTS of reviews on it already. That is pertinent data you can factor in. You don't have to take it to a lab with a metallurgist. It's Condor and it's 1075. We know their rep and we know the generality in which it performs. Pertinent data. Nothing at all wrong with your review.

Great video, I was wondering after you did all the tests did you clean the blade before you shaved your leg with it? I've done a couple tests myself and I've noticed to give it a fair test you have to clean the blade with oil after a test to see if it still cuts well, if there's still micro pieces of wood on it it won't seem to be as sharp, either way great review.

JDOCustomLeather That sound reasonable for sure. I've never done that with any of my knives unless I cut sap or fat wood with it. I could see how that would affect it though.

you look so awkward doing the video with a busted wing but good on ya mate, may i suggest with featherstick making you should always push your curls all the way to same spot that you stop it will help. I have a condor that I don't use much but I found they are not sharp straight from the box, and need constant stropping to keep there edge but generally its a pretty good steel that is very tough. It is more useful as a machete/parang steel but it wont ever fail you. Thanks for sharing the video hope your all healed up and mended.

brutalbrital Thats for the well wishes. Your right about the feather sticking of course, I need a lot more practice with it. Some folks get certain skill fast, but not so much for me on this one. Your right about the steel being a tad soft too, however mine did come sharp right out of the box. Thanks!

I bought a Bushlore a year and a half ago and I paid for "extra grade sharpening" from a vender(I'm sure you can figure out who that was). The knife came to me with the worst edge I have ever had, and it rolled every time I batoned it. When I mentioned it to the vender, and he came within one mm of calling me a liar, saying he had personally hand sharpened my knife, so he could not understand my issue. After I made a video showing it on video, he begged me to sent it back for an exchange, saying he sent me the wrong knife that had not receive his personal "extra grade sharpening service" That also made no since because he brags that he quality control checks each and every knife, even the ones that do not receive that service. I told him to eff off and NEVER contact me again. I cant help but take it personally when someone implies I am a liar. That knife(if you could even call it that) when straight in the garbage along with the average sheath that everone raves about. He even admitted the steel is NOT as good a less expensive Mora. I am glad you like your Bushlore as so many other do.

***** Wow, sounds like you had a bad experience for sure. The sheath sucks by the way. lol. I guess it doesn't suck, but its nothing special. You saw us beat it through oak, so I guess I got a good one. I can't complain if my knife does that for me.

You threw about twenty sparks with that thing. It wasn't just on the first strike. Anyway, stop worrying about edge retention. Worry about how long it will take you to sharpen your 01 steel in a life or death situation.

1095 is the best steel ever made, in my opinion. 1075 has one huge advantage over both 1095 and 01 steel. It's a heck of a lot tougher. You will not break 1075 unless you abuse in horribly. Really horribly. No, it doesn't hold an edge quite as long as 1095, but nothing is less important in a good knife than how long it holds an edge. You can sharpen 1075 back to a razor edge in seconds, and it stays sharp more than long enough to do any normal job. Far too much emphasis is placed on steel hardness. Far too much. Hardness is seldom a good thing in steel, and even 1095 should be no harder than 58. Many prefer it no higher than 55. People are just way too impressed with hardness. It seems to make sense that hard is better, but hardness always comes with a price. Anyway, no, you don't have to baton. Batoning is as amateurish as it gets,. Real woodsmen baton with an axe or a tomahawk, not with a knife. A marketer invented batoning with a knife, not a woodsman, and only KZbin incest keeps it alive.A knife should be your best friend, and you don't beat your best friend with a club. You carry a hatchet or a tomahawk, and let it do the job it was designed to do, which is splitting wood, both by swinging, and by batoning.
