The Condor Bushlore is a full tang, 1075 carbon steel survival/bushcraft knife for well under $50 at the time of this recording. I bought all me sons one last year and they have been great knives.

how is the grind on the knife? I heard condor bushlores come with a bad grind. This has been keeping me from getting one because I suck at reprofiling. I Enjoyed the video.

+Chris Working Mine was a decent scandi grind. I will say I think the heat treat could be better, the edge wants to roll too easily. However, this one is over two years old now, I think Condor has worked on that problem.

when i got my first bush lore it chipped immediately upon impact when chopping lightly, sent it back and the second one performed well for a few days then developed an immense dent.Could it have been a freak accident that both blades were duds which would still mean to me bad quality control from condor, or is an imperfection in all bushlores? just wondered thanks for the vid though keep it up.

@@sticksnstonespatriot1728 Tops BOB Is an absolute beast-bit more expensive but gives you total confidence in its performance. It has weight and thickness which gives it excellent strength in batoning and chopping, and a nice scanvex grind that is remarkably good at fine work. Personally I reprofiled mine to be full scandi for ease of sharpening, and now it’s even bitier. If you’re looking for a hell of a bushcraft blade for around the same price as the condor, but way better, look into the real steel bushcraft knife. It’s D2 steel, holds and edge like a champ, comes with a nice kydex sheath and g2 scales. I’ve beaten the hell out of it for three and half years now, and it’s showed serious toughness.

Hi Brother. I had the very first gen of this knife and the edge was so bad as in very blunt.Have they sorted this out now. And will the back edge of the knife at the very tip throw a spark this is important on a bushcraft knife.I thought I would ask before I go and get one. Thanks again.

3mm is very close to 1/8 5mm very close to 3/16 6mm close to 1/4 and 8mm close to 5/16 and I believe its a Scandinavian grind PS condors sharpening service is very hit and miss.... that said some of the best knives to own, if anything you will get VERY GOOD at sharpening knives lol...

Because of the monetary system currently in control, made in USA knives are more expensive but in the case of a similar USA made knife, the LTWightKnives.com Genesis is well worth the added expense.

The Genesis is a very nice knife and I think it is easily worth the $175 it cost. But let's face it, that's more than lot of folks are able or willing to spend on a knife. Condor makes some good quality knives at prices most people can afford.

The grind is what I have heard referred to as scandivex. I've got a half dozen Condor knives. Half I sharpened as straight scandi. That process sucked. It's well heat treated for sure. The other 3 I sharpened as convex with a piece of foam rubber on a 2x4 w/ some automotive sandpaper. That works quite well. I have not sharpened my bushlore yet but have no doubt it will take a keen edge as well. Great review, sir!

Unfortunately I ended up with microchips across the belly of the blade on mine. Carving on some knotty Cedar was apparently too much for the blade edge. Some people say the steel on theirs is too soft and the edge rolls, the heat treat on mine seems to be too hard and it easily chips. This was intended to be my go to hiking and camp knife for my upcoming Appalachian trips; I even bought a really nice leather horizontal carry sheath with a LMF firesteel for it. If you research the reviews on Amazon and KZbin you will see there are a lot of people experiencing these same issues. The really sad part is I finished smoothing out my cedar walking stick with a Chinese 440a ss knife which went right through those remaining knots with no problems and no blade damage, go figure! If you got one with a proper heat treatment then you’re probably good to go but I no longer trust mine.I fixed the chipped edge with my Smith's diamond sharpener but now it's new home is behind the seat of my pickup truck as a back up blade, sadness........ I seem to have no luck with knives made of HC steel.

Great review as usual. In the comments on PreparedMind101's review of this same knife, John Madden points out that there is a clear coating on the blade. Also that it works much better on wood and ferro after the coating has been worn off the edge and spine. Reminds me of the first time I used a Pocket Chainsaw... My usual question: Have you tried the Bushlore with flint (the rock) yet? Always interested in what works and what doesn't, especially with flint. My TOPS 1095 knife barely works with flint while my Jeff White 1095 knife works real well. The difference? TOPS differentially heat treats and the spine is just not hard enough. One reviewer states that the Bushlore is 57-58 RHC which, in my experience, will yield poor sparks.

duxdawg I can't remember if I have or not. These knives belong to my sons so I don't have as much time with them as some others. I'll try to remember to give it a try and let you know. I think you made a good point though, I don't think most knives will ever work as well as a dedicated striker steel. The qualities that make a knife blade strong and durable are not really the same as what you need to create sparks with rocks. That's not to say it can't be done, because it is, but there will always be compromises whenever you are working toward multiple purposes.

Poorly finished POS with an ok sheath, mine came with a damaged blade tip, cheap price but still not worth the money. If you must buy this knife make sure you get it from a retail outlet where you can examine it first & not online.

I have a Condore Bushcraft Parang & a Village Parang. I've had problems with the edge rolling after only slight use. Have you had this problem with the Bushlore? Thanks, Ken.

I haven't really had that issue Ken, although the edge does seem a little fragile to me too. I bought 3 Bushlores for my sons. One of them has a pretty good nick in the blade but I don't know how it happened. I think the grind they use has something to do with it. They are listed as 1075 steel but I don't know about the temper. Probably not as good as 1095 but certainly not crap steel. I will say I have the Condor Kukri Machete and it has a very pronounces convex grind. I have not had any problems with nicks or rolling with it.

If PKS made this knife shape with the 5 checkpoints for their course, it would be the best knife out there. I love mine, just wish it was 1095 and had a 90 degree spine, and perhaps a 5” blade instead of a 4”. Just my thoughts 😊

seattwa Yes you can, but it's probably not as effective as a dedicated steel striker. And as for the spine, all my condors have a pretty good 90 degree spine, even my Kukri Machete.

Can you use alcohol and vinegar on the blade for over and hour to darken the blade to prevent it from rust in the future? I have seen somewhere on KZbin video of a guy showing this and claims that it will protect the blade from corrosion and rust? I don't know if anyone has try it yet to see if it works? Or have you tried that yet?

Sure. You probably don't need the alcohol. Just look up "force a patina" and there are lots and lots of videos.

I meant the alcohol is use for cleaning the blade before putting it in the glass of vinegar but first the steel wool would be used first then alcohol to make sure the blade is spotless and very clean. I have one of the original Condor Bushlore's with the 1/4" thick blade. It was a mess when it arrived. The edge was off center because one of the bevels was narrow and the other was wide. It took me a week to remedy that using my whet stones. Tonight I ordered one of the new ones. I'll see how the 1/8" blade stacks up against the thicker one. I must say that the 1/4" blade is a real hog for battoning! It has taken down dead hardwood trees that were easily 3" thick. No damage whatsoever to the edge of the blade. It didn't even need a stropping afterwards. If the new one can do that I'll be tickled every shade of pink. Thanks for the vids Bryan.

Bryan, my new Condor Bushlore is here. Theres a world of difference between it and my first one. I don't have to do anything to this one. A work of beauty. I lost my Kabar /Becker BK-2 recently. In some ways I'm kinda ticked, it was not cheap. On the other hand, it was very heavy. Looking back, if I want a cutting tool that requires some weight and heft, I'll pack along a Cold Steel Trailhawk, much better for batoning wood than a knife. Heck, I bought a really nice sheet rock hammer for $ 9.00 USD, and have chopped down 4 magnolia trees on my property, all with +/- 4-6 inch trunks. Weighs less than a pound. What I want is a good, solid, dependable bushcraft knife to compliment the hawk/axe/ sheet rock hammer. Based on your review, I am going to buy one of these knives! Good review! Best regards, MiF

Good video, when I started going into the bush, a 4" blade was highly recommended, so I have a few in that size, one thing I noticed, with a softer less carbon blade, the good thing is, they can bend, but not snap, like higher carbon blades, I would rather have a blade bend, rather then it snap, but the softer steel, also looses it's edge holding ability, I have three Condor tools, I have the Jungle Saber Machete, it's in their 420HC Stainless, very lite, and a great machete in a swampy area, or around water, I also have a Wilderness Tool, also in the 420HC Stainless, it's like a knife/hatchet combo, I like using it to build shelters, especially on rainy weekends, I can chop down small trees to make a debris shelter, and just cover it with a blue tarp, and stay dry, the Wilderness Tool, has a unique style to it, one side is a around a 5" curved belly knife, a hook, and the hatchet edge for. chopping, with a smaller size hatchet too, good camp building tool, then I have the Golok, in the 1075 carbon blade, on hard wood in my area, I find the edge rolls, where the 420HC doesn't as easy, like you said, for the price, they may be priced right, but what I have found, I would rather save up to buy a better knife, since a knife is one of the most important tools you have to have, a knife that will hold up, and hold a good edge, you can get a great knife for sometimes 2-3 X's what you would pay for a Condor, but if you just use a knife without using it alot, and just cut some light stuff, like traps, stakes, rope for a tarp shelter, then the Condor are ok, but if your on a lenghtly trip, where your using your knife alot, then I say, save up, and get a better knife, today they make great stainless steel knives, that hold an edge well, and some great carbon blades, so far my favorite carbon steel is a deferentially tempered 52100, then comes the size, I like little longer blades than 4", but I do like a 4" blade, depends what I'm doing, that's why I multi carry knife sets when I'm in the bush, my S.O.G. Seal Pup Elite, is around 4 3/4" blade, and what S.O.G. does with their AUS 8, it holds a great edge, but it doesn't have a choil, and my Swamp Rat Rodent 4, almost same size with a choil is much better for me, it's like two knives in one, I can choke uo, or swing long, for a small knife, it does chop lite stuff great, the closest knife that I have to the Condor Bushlore is my thinner polished handle Blind Horse Bushcrafter, yes more expensive, but I've used it over longer periods of time, it all depends what you want, and how your going to use it, if it's a part time bush trip, and your not going to do that all the time, Condor tools are great, but the difference between my Blind Horse Bushcrater, and the Condor Bushlore, speaks for itself, that takes alot of going into the bush, and paying attention to your tools, I usually am a 3knife carry guy, I like a 3"-4" for my neck knife, sometime I don't count my neck knife as part of my carry, then a 5'-6" knife, 7"-8", then 9"- and up, my favorite set is my Swamp Rat Knives, but like I said, for the price, I like my Condor' s too, their sheath's are primo, but it just how hard your going to use your tools. been looking at buying some condor knives for a while, especially the bushlore. Thanks for mentioning going gear, i'll definitely be buying from them. A friend of mine had a mora 511 HC and cut a bunch of potatoes with it then left it for 3 months without even wiping it so you can only imagine what happened there. Anyway, i soaked the blade in vinegar for 2 days then wire brushed and sanded it with 600 grit. it actually looks pretty cool now and its surprisingly nice and smooth.

Hi Caleb. Just to be clear, I am not and have never claimed to be an "expert" on survival or anything else. I'm just a regular guy who has spent a lot of time in the woods. OK...I am a pretty good plumber ;-) And I do know how to measure in metric units, I just can't really convert metric to SAE off the top of my head. I have never needed to on the woods so I'm having a hard time understanding why it really matters. I AM working on learning to use the metric system for land navigation because I think it just makes the math a lot easier. Any tips you can offer would be appreciated. I would say it is a mora upgrade I loved my mora to peices, and thats how it is... in peices. Moras handles make it look cheap and I don't like the rat tail design. Deffinitly going to pick one up for my trip!

ya i have this knife, love it, i soaked the sheath in water and then pinched it down with som large bull clips>(paper clips) with a hanky in between, to protect sheath, dried it for 3 days, and knife fits in there good and snug.

I bought mine its a second edition like yours the first editions were 1/4 inch thick and from what I understand had horriable grinds but what they went with is what I have 1/8 inch and scandi grind I do not think is a true scandi it like a secondary bevel at least on mine

Yep, I had read several reviews about bad grinds. So I bought mine in person from a local store (GoingGear.com) so I could see for myself. and The grinds are fine and I like the knives. I think they are a great value.

Brian, just for future reference, the rust can be removed fairly easily with Baking soda and water, let it set for a while. Also Whink does a great job. It's in the stain removing aisle. Test the steel first though before you use this. It is a fairly powerful caustic.

I want a Kephart knife For a fixed blade knife Seems like all your fixed blade knives in stores seem to be designed to kill people by Colonel Bowie back in the 1800's... Hi Brian. Another good video. I've got a first gen and second gen Condor Bushlore and they both have gone thru the works in the bush and have both survived with no damage. I prefer the second gen, thinner bladed model over the thicker first gen blade for cutting but the first gen is a batoning brute for such a short blade. Love 'em both. The first gen knife cost me $25 and the second gen cost $40. Hard to beat for those prices. Good knives.

i like my bush lore, i noticed it was rusted up pretty good when i pulled it out of the sheath this last weekend, don't remember what i used it for last, and i had just had it out a few days prior to the camp out this past weekend, i didn't get it wet i don't think, i just don't know what i did to get it so rusty, oh well.

It does ok at batoning. The edges seems to roll a little too easily on the ones I bought but that was a couple of years ago now. I think they worked on their steel treatment since then.
