The story of the gun itself is fascinating during barb there were more of it mounted on the ZiS30 than towed in standard divisional AT companies. Some dingus cavalry clique marshal decides that the gun is a needless overkill, and so he shut down production in 1941 after only a couple hundred guns made. A couple of years later a "tiger" panic has also sat in, and urgent need for high velocity high penetration guns was needed, which brought the ZiS2 back to production. However, the rather small 57mm caliber meant that the shell didn't hit quite as hard as desired. Luckily the 85mm gun was soon coming online on Su-85 and KV-85
@quan-uo5ws

The marshal was right though, in 1941 there was no need for it, and the 76mm was far more effective against infantry or fortifications.

@@quan-uo5ws here's the catch. The ZiS3 76mm gun was also blocked from entering production. In fact, Grabin, the head of that artillery factory, had to start the production in secret and only in December of 41 convinced Stalin to give the gun a chance. Those delays meant that for almost all of Barbarossa nd the spring 42 battles, the red army was handicapped against increasing numbers of up-armored panzer 3s and 4s and later StuGs since they had to rely on questionable AT rifles and weak 45mm AT guns.

Good idea to cover this. According to D. Stahel, only 13 % OF GERMAN TANKS at the start of Barbarossa were PZR 4s, 29% were Pzr 1 and 2s... Panzer IIIIs were 28% .. So it looks like IIIs were the workhorse.. And one can see how dangerous a 76mm AT gun could be to this attacking force. Germany started with too few Panzer IVs and never could make up for this deficit. I think historians are just now realizing how well the Soviet soldier fought back in the beginning.. The German Generals really fogged our understanding of Barbarossa because we believed all their versions of what happened.

Years ago, I worked in a gun shop, in the middle of nowhere, in NH, which is saying a lot. The manager described the shop as Miller Country: nothing fancy. I did get to learn at the feet of some real neat firearms gurus. The shop didn't deal in antiques; we took them on consignment. I learned that what a lot of collectors wanted were some rarities that were rare specifically because nobody wanted them when they were new. Everybody and his brother bought a Winchester 1894 lever gun, in 30/30, but what about an 1894 in some weird, oddball cartridge, that failed to sell, and they only made 100000 of them? That's what a lot of collectors were searching for. Now, after that lengthy intro, this aspect of my antique firearms experience is why I really enjoy your videos, putting the spotlight on such interesting vehicles, that were nearly lost to history. Thank you and keep up the good work. It's July 4th, Happy Birthday.

The Komsomolets T-20 #459 shown at 6:42 was captured by the Finns. Overall, about 500 of them were caught during the Winter war as trophies and put into use as artillery tractors. @sofuswurtz5951 It dates back to the formation of the Finnish armed forces in 1918. It was a popular emblem at the time in many European countries, considered a symbol of good luck. @@justasimplegamer129 What is said is that a pair of outriggers might help reduce the wobble of the cannon if it is on a heavy chassis. As you can see, the LVT (A)(4) (ZiS-2) with the same cannon still wobbles when firing, moving, and braking, even though the LVT chassis is three times heavier than the Zis-30 tractor. So maybe the developer considered that is an unnecessary feature to bring into the game.

When I first saw the ZIS-30 in WT, I thought it was some sorta conglomeration of a Stuant hull with the 57mm AT gun, but given how early it was produced, suppose it was a bit far-fetched to expect such a modification to exist, especially since the engine of the Stuart was in the back, right where the gun was.

Honestly, when you get invaded, I'd imagine you'd scramble up anything to try and slow the advance. Even 100 anti-tank guns in the early months would be much more favorable than having nothing to slow the advance. Plus, it gives a great learning experience for what a proper design should look like, such as engine, crew locations, and armor, when using a small platform. Any experience and armor, is better than none.

I use the ZiS-30 all the time in War Thunder. Awesome gun for the battle rating. You can one-shot kill just about everything, even frontally if you know where to aim. Definitely a camper's best friend if you can find good cover from strafing aircraft. However, it's as slow as molasses going uphill in January, can be killed by someone throwing a rock, and only has a main gun ammo capacity of 20 rounds.

A small vehicle can go places many others can not. Combined with the excellent high velocity gun & well designed ergonomics(would be easily able to utilize two loaders & a dismounted spotter) this is a good system.

Thanks to WoT I learned of a similar tank that was a Chinese concept but like most ideas for Chinese tank destroyers it was scrapped,basically the same gun as the Zis-30 but mounted on an M5 Stuart

pls do a video on the T-20, I was always fascinated by its small design. A lot of people often think something fierce like a Tiger or Panther is cool but I always thought the tiny tanks such as the Panzer II and BT-5 were cool because of their petite appearances. It might've been because of my interest in Narrow Gauge Trains that makes me love small Tanks (Narrow Gauge Trains are often smaller than other Trains due to the tracks they run on are narrower hence the term narrow-gauge). I even drew up universes where the average "proper" tank was comparable to a Panzer II with the heaviest tanks being similar to a Char B1.

The Zis30 was quite successful for the short time it was on the battlefield. It filled the gap that the Soviets had for quick firing, easily manufacturable and self propelled AT gun which excelled at doing what it was designed to do. The 57mm gun on the T-34 which was based on the Zis-2 was also very effective for this same reason.

11:50 I also find it wrong to blame the user for that as from what it looks like from the pictures you have to go down to deploy it meaning the tank has to stop for at least a good minute to be ready to fire effectively which if the tank somehow run into a German tank which doesn't have to deploy something for recoil the Zis will be at a great disadvantage and here i put the scenario where "No time to deploy" make sense in my opinion it is no one fault not the user or factory rather a thing they should have tried to improve in the tank to make the vehicle quicker in combat

Believe it or not, the first Soviet TD that comes to my mind is the Su-76i. Not because it was common but because it's so unique being a soviet TD built on German chassis. That and it's also mysterious because very little information about it is around.
