So the reason that there is a gene called sonic is that there is this other gene in fruit flies that makes them get these super long hairs. The scientists decided to name that gene hedgehog because the fruit flies looked all spiky. Then another super hectic version of that gene was kinda jokingly named Sonic as a reference to Sonic the hedgehog.
