It is called the Articles of Confederation & Perpetual Union. We were founded as a PERPETUAL UNION. If you want to consult that document you should consult the article of it that forbids any constituent states forming any "confederacies" any states part of that perpetual union w/o consulting all the states of the union. it also forbids any attempt to alter the union w/o consulting all members of the union. Under the clear language of the AoC&PU secession & confederation were clearly illegal. Under the current U.S. Constitution we only have a "more perfect union," which means a more complete union. What is more then perpetual?
@VictorLepanto4 жыл бұрын
@Warren Take that point up w/ Jeff Davis, he is the one who did so, when he fired on Federal territory & Federal troops. Invading & stealing that territory & property. Actually this was done to multiple forts & other facilities throughout the South. Most of these violent seizures occurred under Buchanan, so they were a fete accompli under Lincoln. It was the Confederacy which wanted a war & deliberately provoked one to seize territory. Remember, in the 1860 election, the issue had NOT been whether or not slavery would be allowed to continue in the Southern states but whether it would be EXTENDED into the Western territories. After the planters, who pretended to secede, set up their sham confederacy; they dared to claim the territories West Texas as their own. The cynical purpose of the Confederacy was to seize new territory for themselves so as to expand their economic interests (i.e. slavery) into those territories. The Secessionists knew they couldn't get those territories w/o war so they deliberately provoked one to get them. As for "declaring war on your own citizens," talk to George Washington about that. He made war on Loyalist American troops in the Revolution & during the Shays Rebellion, & during the Whiskey Rebellion after the U.S. Constitution was ratified & Washington was already president. That's three times he made war on his "own citizens." Lee would have found it enlightening to talk about discuss what the Federal Gov't is allowed to do to enforce the law & Federal supremacy. The nature of a gov't is to establish laws & to enforce them on those who will submit to those laws. It is called law & order. Any violent lawless person, like Jeff Davis, who disrupts the states lawful order is subject to the forceful application of those laws. It is called the police power. The Confederacy was a lawless conspiracy, it is that simple.
@VictorLepanto4 жыл бұрын
@WarrenI'm not the one trying to over complicate things. That's the slavery apologist's job, not mine. Those who seek to excuse the actions of the slave holding planter class's love to say such things as, "The war wasn't about slavery...uh...it was about tariffs...& uh...states rights...yeah that's the ticket...so Lincoln & the Union just use slavery to distract from what they were rrrreallly about." All nonsense, America was divided 4/ her 1st 80 yrs by planters trying to protect they petty privileges @ the expense of the rest of the country. Only about 10 yrs earlier that same class had dragged this country into a squalid little war of aggression against Mexico to advance their nasty economic interest in slavery. They thought they could give the rest of their country the same treatment the dished out on Mexico, provoke an aggressive war against another power so as to illicitily snatch some Western territory. I dare you or any other CSA apologist to explain to me on what possible grounds they could territories which were part of a Union they had supposedly left. New Mexico, Arizona & California were U.S. territories. By claiming them they were threatening the Union w/ war. This claim proves the CSA intended aggression from the beginning. Many of the seceeding states specifically mention Western territories as justifying their secession. I submit the CSA intended war from the beginning & would have provoked it under any circumstance, prove me wrong.

@Dingle Berry I appreciate your comments. I have always appreciated the South. It has always been our nation's most creative part. Why does our nations most original music, art, writing come from the South? It has something to do w/ rootedness I think. Yankee culture was retarded from its beginning by the legacy of Puritanism. We as Americans owe our love of Christmas to the South. The seed of Southern culture was Jamestown, obviously founded under King James (of Bible fame) & thus preceded the cultural revolution caused by Cromwell. Christmas was still a problem for many in New England as late as the Revolution. It is strange w/ Southern Baptist preachers spouting about "The reason for the Season." The U.S. has needed the South to keep her grounded, in the face of crazy radical social reformers in every age. Remember, Lincoln was born in Kentucky, which was formerly part of Virginia. Lincoln & Davis were born only a few miles from each other. Lincoln was descended from original Virginia settlers as much as was Lee. Best things always come from the South.

Some people say states rights and some people say slavery. To me the dates don't match up as far as Lincoln is concerned. The whole emancipation proclamation. But in Confederate documents slavery is mentioned a lot. As a veteran I try to think how it would be like to live in that time frame. I think if the war was over slavery, why would I fight for someone else's right to own a human being? But I also realize most people in the south couldn't even afford shoes, let alone slaves. But people did volunteer and people were drafted as well on both sides. It was pretty obvious that I could never understand why people chose the sides they did. I never grew up in that time period. I hear and see lots of people arguing about it the Confederacy which is good. It means people are in gauged on the subject. What I didn't understand is people all up in arms about something that no one alive today had a damn thing to do with. If slavery from the 1800's brothers them so much. Why aren't they doing something about slavery that's happening right in front of our faces? There are more slaves today than in recorded history. Still selling slaves on the ivory coast in Africa. Human trafficking world wide. Yes even in our wonderful USA. Lots of sex trafficking and yes. Trafficking is slavery. You'd be surprised by how many people argue against it. I couldn't careless about the Confederacy other than learn from our countries mistakes. The monuments mean nothing to me. "White Man's Flag!" There you have it - clear-cut, sufficient, directly to the point ... however you wish to use the term "blatant." Now, what's the problem America? Why does this country still support a flag that represents hate, oppression, and attempted genocide of races other than white? I know of examples taken in 1863, 1864 and 1865 including at Appomattox. I have done a serious study of Civil War flags for 35 years and have these flags documented.

It's a Confederate Flag plain and simple. It may not be the "national flag" which still included the Northern Virginia Battle flag in it's entirety within the confederate flag so at the very least it is a very important and powerful symbol of the confederacy. No one would confuse the Northern Virginia Battle flag as anything other than a representation of the Confederacy itself. Regardless of the specifics of whether it was the Northern Virginia battle flag, the naval jack, or a part of the 2nd/3rd National Confederate flag it still represents an enemy to the United States of America.

The subject of Slavery was a matter at hand, THE over riding and ALL encompassing greater issue was State's Rights, as was garaunteed both under the Articles of Confederation and The Articles of Congress.... Along with the complete economic destruction of those States by the abolition of Slavery. Ultimately "State's Rights" in Life, Liberty, Self Governance and Economic Freedom was the Rally Cry for Succession and eventually War... Slavery was a main contributing factor, there's absolutely no denying that. Back to my original point at hand. Which neither of you two offered an answer, just misdirection.... Please explain how Slavery is "Racist"..... Again, Slavery was World Wide at that time. Slavery had been a way of production and labor for 1,000's of years. ALL RACES are guilty of Slavery and the use of it for labor and production. It was the Way of the World in that day and age! Whites, Blacks, Browns, Reds, and Yellow skinned people All Over the Planet were Slaves AND used Slave Labor... Last time... How is it "RACIST" if all mankind participated in, partaked in the use of its function and way of life on either side of the issue?.?.?.? The ONLY way it can or possibly could be "Racist" is if only 1 race of people used it against all others. Then it's "Racist"... If the White man used Slavery against Blacks, Browns, Reds, & Yellows and they all in return didn't use it against Whites or each other.... Then it's "Racist" and White's would be "Racist" using Slavery against all other's. But because ALL has been involved and guilty of using Slavery, it cannot be ""Racist"... Wrong, evil, should have been and rightfully so eventually abolished here in the U.S.... but Not "Racist."

If an Indian defeated another tribe and took on another red man or woman or child as a Slave as they did.... How's that "Racist"? If a Black free man in America took an African black person as a Slave as they did in the U.S..... How's that "Racist"?.?.? Similar: racial discrimination racialism racial prejudice the belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another. Sir, yet again, Slavery did not discriminate based on Race. Slavery was used and abused by ALL RACES. It *cannot* be "Racist" You have to take the issue of Slavery on as a whole and not in part. To take it on in part and rightfully divide the issue you make out the entire Human Race to be "Racist".

@clementgeorge24494 жыл бұрын
Just to give you an alternate perspective on the Confederate flag. Something that you might not have thought about. This is what the Confederate flag means to me. As a young boy growing up in Philadelphia during the 60s up North. Yes, a Yankee. The talk of young men was war as it was the cold war Era and our youth were gearing up for a bloody showdown between the USA and the Soviet Union. In our conversations, we discussed doing battle with the Soviet Union. And we would always say, if you were going into battle, you would be lucky and proud if someone behind you was flying a Confederate flag. It meant that the southern boys were loyal and had your back and that they were of character who would fight like hell for you. So to my surprise, somewhere in the 90s, schools started pushing the confederate flag as a symbol of the KKK. It may have been. I don't know as I know no one who is or was a KKK member. But as a country, should we let a minority opinion define the character of a symbol or should the majority opinion matter? I believe the majority opinion is one of Southern Pride and a very small group have used this flag as a symbol of hate. So the question that I ask is, "Why do we let the minority destroy the great southern pride of the majority?" Of course the easy and popular answer is to say the Civil War is about slavery. But I am not a historian and I would like to think that it was more a group of states that did not want to be told how to live their lives. And slavery could of been one facet. But as I said my real knowledge of the Civil War is limited. There is no disputing the injustice of slavery. And I am acknowledging that I do not have the credentials to properly discuss Civil War history. I would however guess that the rich southerners owned slaves and the poor southerners fought the battle. And to the poor southern fighters, the flag means southern pride to them. And I would guess the rich southerners who owned slaves could care less about the Confederate flag. Just keep in mind, "Thinking before hating."

The Swastika was a symbol of good luck and was used by peaceful people in their religions. Then the Nazis took it for their use. It's not about what it was (though this is also HUGELY important that we don't forget), it's how it was used and what it became. Let us remember that things can start out good but can be hijacked by crazy, ambitious people with their own agendas (or they can even start out as good but then get corrupted by power). The flag may have started out with good intentions. But when it came to a civil war, both sides brought their own flags to battle....and BOTH flags were symbols of division. Had the south won, how would the flag of the north be viewed? I'm just opening up differing perspectives...not actually taking a side on this.
@wandererwerewolf4774 жыл бұрын
I'll point out that the Nazis used a reversed swastika. Not quite on the same level as an inverted cross, but in the same vein. In addition, there were loads of battle flags -- that one just happens to be the best-looking, which is why everybody kept borrowing it. therealcivilwar.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/cfed-flag.jpg

What the Blood stained banner flag TRULY symbolizes: #1 The 13 stars represent the original 13 colonies. A lot of people say there were 13 states in the Confederacy, but there actually 11. #2 the criss-cross is the Saint Andrews cross, the same symbol used on the flag of Scotland and Jamaica. #3 the white background symbolizes cotton NOT skin color. Before the war began the south was producing 2/3 of the world supply of cotton. #4 the red vertical stripe symbolizes the exact same thing as the red stripes do on the American flag, which is the blood of the fallen.

The confederate battle flag was waved proudly by people who waged war against the USA and lost. They committed treason which is punishable by death according to the constitution of the USA. The leadership of the confederacy should have been executed in accordance with the constitution. Why weren't they? They waged war against the USA because they wanted to continue to own people. They wanted to continue to force labor, torture, rape, and murder people. They did this while proudly waving the confederate flag. Ask yourself, is that racist? After the civil war, the confederate battle flag was waved proudly by people who went around killing black people. They would kidnap black people from their homes, burn their homes, and take them to be tortured and murdered. They hung them from trees, castrated them, stabbed them, burned them, dismembered them, and so much more evil things. They did all these things in a carnival atmosphere. White men, women, and CHILDREN watched and cheered. With the smell of burned flesh in the air, they posed for pictures in front of the mutilated bodies smiling from ear to ear. They even created post cards from the pictures to send to friends and relatives like we would Disney post cards today. Some, who considered themselves fortunate, took trophies like fingers, ears, and dicks with them. They did all of this while proudly waving the confederate battle flag. Ask your self, is that racist? Through out US American history, white people have done evil things while proudly waving that flag. The history of the USA is tainted by the blood of black people, Chinese people, Native American people, Mexicans and so much more who were murdered by people while proudly waving the confederate flag. Again I ask you, is that racist?
