I appreciate you men and have subscribed. My son is marrying a Lutheran girl so I’ve been studying. Experiencing a little bit of a crush on Lutheranism, but want to delve further.

Confession and Absolution is a beautiful gift from God. It doesn't get taken advantage of enough. As someone who did not grow up Lutheran, I encourage all Christians, life-long Lutherans or otherwise, to consider the blessing that God is giving us in Confession and Absolution.

I have often borrowed Flame's explanation of God's grace being delivered in "a multiplicity of ways." Recently I found George MacDonald describe it this way: "Faith opens all the windows to God's wind."

As a Catholic, confession is fantastic. You need to get a Catholic priest on this show to talk about it.

My PCA church does a corporate confession comprised of our asking the Father for forgiveness for sins committed, and good deeds omitted. And then he pronounces our absolution. I can’t remember if he absolves us after communion or after the confession. Still recovering from Covid.

A great episode! Heaven on Earth: the gifts of Christ in the Divine Service by Arthur Just is a great book on the history of Lutheran liturgy. He states, "public confession and absolution are not part of the Divine Service but preparation to enter Christ's bodily presence and receive the gifts from that presence." Like you mentioned, it's a great way to prepare our hearts, assured we are forgiven, gather together with our brothers and sisters in Christ, and ready to receive God's Word and Sacrament.

Do Lutherans believe authority to forgive sins (as in John 20:23) is passed down through Apostolic succession, or that Christ has given every Christian that authority, or something different? I’m convinced Jesus meant what he said in John 20:23, that he gave the Apostles authority to forgive, but I’m not sure where it goes from there.

Thanks for asking. We believe in the succession of doctrine from the Apostles. That’s what Jesus meant. Respectfully, Rome and the Orthodox made a misstep in understanding here. We hold to the priesthood of all the saints. That’s the clearest teaching of scripture. Much more can be said.
