Great documentary on the rescue procedure. But that doesn’t really make me optimistic: how long does the fire brigade need to arrive on scene and reach the victim with the SCBA? How long can you survive without oxygen? When working in a dangerous space with vertical access: always wear your harness with lanyard picked in an tripod rigged. It will safe your life!

Often it takes 10 or more minutes for the fire department to arrive whereas you can only survive for 4 to 6 minutes without oxygen.

In short by the time the fire department arrives at the scene it would no longer be a rescue but rather a body recovery.

Nice video for avoidance of confined space related fatal accidents

How about 1.58 from the time the worker went down from the time he was out of the confined space. If you work somewhere that doesn't have a confined space rescue team, urge wherever you work to get one. Someone who's not breathing, or breathing bad air has 6mins to live... the fire dept. should be a last resort.

Colorado springs kindly put something logic, first if entering a confined space you must have a permit which has rescue team and standby. Fire department cannot be first on response

This is not realistic. I’ve never heard of a non-permit required confined space that is 18 feet deep, WTF really??? As long as the CSFD took it wouldn’t be a rescue it would be a body retrieval. And no the fire dept doesn’t have their shit together, they’re slower than molasses in the middle of January.

The fire department should not be your rescue plan. They should be a part of it, but not the entirety

This is a rescue mission. From the time of 911 call, FD on scene, set up ALL of that equipment (Which is heavy and takes forever), and have 2 men in the hole, extract the victim, and both men out in 30 minutes is FAST! Very well done to these men. There simply isn't a faster way to do it.

About 5 years late to reply but I'd like to point out that they mentioned an air monitor in the video, implying that this environment is unsafe without proper PPE, anything more than a minute without good air is a good chance for serious brain damage, 10+ is almost 100% fatal. 30 minutes to rescue someone without a safe air supply, they went room temp about 20-15 minutes ago*. There's a reason every rescue product like this is designed for both emergency services AND commercial purposes, you can't always expect emergency services to respond in time, let alone do the actual rescue in time. *Yes, I know that sometimes the unsafe air supply will be just good enough to allow oxygen to be supplied properly but just make someone fall unconscious, but usually It's something that makes you go down because you don't get enough oxygen.

This is the reason not to rely on the fire depart ment for rescue. Having a rescue plan means doing it yourself. Still call 911 but they are a back up tot he back up. First priority was getting the victim fresh air, if it was safe to do so.

+David Stevenson is 100% on que. The entrant would likely be dead by the time the fire department arrives. This is a major issue in health and safety today in North America. Emergency services should either be on standby at the site, or, be used as a complete last resort.

If this is a real situation we are dealing with a body recovery and not rescue,
