You have to love how Guinan uses her influence with picard only when she needs to. There are some people who gain that kind of influence with a person and whether intentional or not, exploit it. Guinan only ever uses her ability to get Picards ear, only when it is important. She also knows how to pull only as hard as needed, whether it's a gentle tug on the sleeve or a grab on the ear and bluntly going 'listen here.'
@benjaminoechsli19419 ай бұрын

@ryancarroll3957Ай бұрын
She was always subtle about it. That's what I liked about older trek, instead of screaming and gesturing and lens flares she'd just quietly convey how serious something was by her tone, body language, eyes, voice, choice of words. Like the time she basically berated Geordie for being a bully. She just said "if I thought nobody wanted to be around me, I'd probably be late and nervous too" No raised voice, just an "I think you're better than this..." guilt him rather than batter him into it. Then the time she got Picard to go to lead an away team to feed a predestination paradox, she's casually testing drinks and then subtly she says "starfleet captains don't usually lead away teams...this time you have to...(look) you just do". "you remember the first time we met?" "of course"..."don't be so sure" If this was Discovery or even the new Pike series (which at least kinda feels like real trek) she'd be screaming and saying how the sky will fall and the universe will collapse , melodramatic music playing...maybe even a musical breaking out..
@LouiseEirwenАй бұрын
@@ryancarroll3957 Exactly stated. I've noticed this trend in movies and in Hollywood in general when it comes to how they are writing and producing things. Stuff that use to be said calmly but conveying the importance is now being over exagerated and flashy. I think its partly the mood of the newer writers and producers, they think this is what has to be done. That and I've noticed a lot of public not understanding anymore when something is implied/gestured to, ect. Its like if they don't see it on camera explicitly or with a big huge show of emotion they don't seem to "get it" or understand. I've read entire comments and more for things where many of the younger generations don't seem able to read the scene or understand the gravity of something or how subtle clues pointing out plots, it seems to go right over there heads. And I don't think its an age thing, it seems to be a generation (and of course there are those that do not fit the mold that look at there peers like "seriously you didn't get that" lol). But I miss the subtle ways series and movies use to do things, like in this clip with Guinan and Picard and many other times throughout the series. I truly miss this type of content compared to much of what is being put out, especially in Star Trek, its why I haven't watched any of the newer series, I would tune in for part of it and just be like um no thank you.

@@LouiseEirwen Phones and the net did this. The good side of this is that as this becomes more of a problem in society, those of us who DO have the capability of delayed gratification, can read longer texts and grasp subtlety will compete in the world far easier than these zombies.

@@AndyCutright Search the Hollywood trope of the "Magical Negro". That should answer your questions. In short, it's an African American with some kind of magical-like powers that escape reason. In one of Steve Shives's videos, titled "Is Commander Riker More Useless Than Counselor Troi? . . . and Other Questions" at 7:30, he responds to a commenter who brought this whole concept to my attention, and Steve agreed with them. In short, Guinan has strange mystical abilities, and her character's done in a way that makes her extremely mysterious, and we never truly get a solid answer most of the time. That's not to say that Guinan as a character wasn't enjoyable. I love Guinan, and I love Whoopi Goldberg's acting in the role. All I'm saying is that they used a very blatant trope that - if it were to be used today, would likely gain significantly _more_ controversy than it did in its time. TV Tropes gives a _really_ good breakdown on it: " _In order to show the world that minority characters are not bad people, one will step forward to help a "normal" person, with their pure heart and folksy wisdom. They are usually black and/or poor, but may come from another oppressed minority. They step (often clad in a clean, white suit) into the life of the much more privileged (and, in particular, almost always white) central character and, in some way, enrich that central character's life. If the Magical Negro (also known as Magic Negro or Mystical Negro) is from a society of Noble Savages, expect an Anvilicious Aesop about the failings of the protagonist's society - which usually leads to the protagonist "Going Native"_ . _With such deep spiritual wisdom (and sometimes - though not always - actual supernatural powers), you might wonder why the Magical Negro doesn't step up and save the day himself. This will never happen. So enlightened and selfless is he that he has no desire to gain glory for himself; he only wants to help those who need guidance... which just happens to mean those who are traditionally viewed by Hollywood as better suited for protagonist roles, not, say, his own oppressed people. In fact, the Magical Negro really seems to have no goal in life other than helping white people achieve their fullest potential; he may even be ditched or killed outright once he's served that purpose. If he does express any selfish desires, it will only be in the context of helping the white protagonists realize their own racism and thereby become better people_ . _Bonus points if this character is a priest of Vodoun. If female, they will nearly always also be a Sassy Black Woman_ . _See also Whoopi Epiphany Speech, Token Black Friend, and Mammy. For a similar trope about women, see Manic Pixie Dream Girl (as well as Disposable Woman and The Bechdel Test); the Magical Girlfriend may play a similar role for her love interest, but is not necessarily an example of this. For the gay version see Magical Queer (who may also be black). The disabled version of this is Inspirationally Disadvantaged. When a non-minority character is portrayed this way, the character is usually a Sidekick Ex Machina. Similar in vein to the Magical Native American, though that trope tends to be more explicitly magical. Also similar to Magical Asian, when an Asian character, often with supernatural abilities, fulfills a mentor role to a white character. Another related trope is White Man's Burden, where the plot is about an ordinary white person who befriends an underprivileged minority character. Related to Magical Romani, which is about Romani characters having magical abilities (or otherwise associated with the supernatural). Also compare Magical Jew_ . _The term "Magical Negro" was popularized by Spike Lee during a lecture denouncing this trope_ ." It also references Guinan specifically under its examples: " _Guinan in Star Trek: The Next Generation, played by Whoopi Goldberg, is an El-Aurian, a member of a race with an almost supernatural sense of time and space. She's Picard's Token Black Friend, but she's happy to give a Whoopi Epiphany Speech to anyone who asks-or anyone else she thinks needs one. She can tell when history has been altered, has centuries of experience and accumulated skills, is a better shot than the Enterprise's chief of security, and is the only person on the ship who scares Q. Despite the fact that she could probably replace anyone on the crew, she chooses to work as a bartender in Ten Forward_ ."

Guinan told Ensign Ro that she had been in trouble a long time ago. Did she mean about four hundred years ago, in a cave under San Francisco?

Really missed whooped Goldberg's character as Guinan. Especially they had her and Q together in a room.😂😂😂

They NEED to make a prequel miniseries about a young Jean Luc Picard and Guinan! I HAVE to know what the story is between them!

Picard met Guinan a few hundred years in the past. This is alluded to in the clip. I can’t remember the name of the episode.

@@matthewberry7206 Wasn't it connected to Generations? Guinan got ripped out of the Nexus or something then Picard and Kirk did their thing. Memory is vague, but I do remember Guinan being on a ship with other stranded(?) people.
@matthewberry72062 жыл бұрын
@@Dowlphin Yes, although there are two things with that. 1.In season 5 episode Ensign Ro, she mentions to Ro Laren that when she was in deep trouble, she needed to trust one man, and he helped her. It was implied that Ro should too. Then Guinen took her to Picard. Thus it's indicated that Picard helped her in a serious situation... which he did in Time's Arrow. 2. In Generations, yes she met Checkov, but she wasn't in trouble as she saw it... the Enterprise "ripped her away" from the Nexus. Even if this was an intended implication, it doesn't reconcile what was indicated in the episode Ensign Ro. And although it give more insight to her backstory, it was done post any TNG episodes, this commonly called a "replot" to "patch" previous inconsistencies. Check out the Ensign Ro episode and see if that helps for you. At any rate, I suppose it's ultimately up to the viewer as to which way they want to view things. :-)

Picard just let's everyone countermand his authority. Oh wait, it's Guinan, a nobody bartender, so it's fine. Why not just turn command of the Enterprise over to her?

She's an Elorean... and was around when humanity was still in the dark ages. Hell, they've been through time shenanigans together. And to say NOTHING of the bond we don't even see on screen-hell. If she had the gumption to ask for a command decison-i'd fuckin listen. The only times he's not listened have resulted in... The death of several crew (by the Borg) Geordi and Ro almost getting actually killed rather than just Missing Presumed Dead And a bunch of other stuff. I mean, she's literally thousands of years old from a race that only ever speak when THEY HAVE SOMETHING REALLY FUCKING IMPORTANT TO SAY. And to say none of 'when Eloreans get mad, the galaxy shakes'. She's gone up against Q- her powers, at least implied-and Memory Beta suppositioned-act like an anchor to the Q's reality warping abilities. Also, we've seen another Elorean get mad enough to wield his knowledge to fucking blow up suns and change the course of a spacetime-less point in reality. Suffice to say, if you don't listen to Guinan, bad things are about to happen.
