Make the battle be in a castle with no fort or tavern and not native terrain so that no obstacles spawn.

In normal fight, conflux would always beat fortress. Quick combat is not a good test. Conflux having better ranged units should play more devensive at start to get some free damage. Sending phoenixes forward first turn is suicide. In my opinion conflux is one of if not the best town in game if you consider all the benefits coming from it.

Fortress in the hands of a player tho can focus down important units with the gorgon and their units are considerably less expensive.
