Confronting DMV, State forcing me to sell the truck due to a mistake

@@davesnothere8859it didn’t slip through one time, the seller registered the truck and then was labeled scrap in his possession, (I showed the CARFAX in the last video) even tho he was still renewing the tag every year, that’s the whole point of the video, is that she sees that the DMV made a mistake on their end but they still aren’t willing to help

I know a friend of mine. Bought a 95 Dodge Cummins. Pulled the body off and placed a 1977 dodge powerwagon cab over top of that.

The seller wont help you out? Because at the end of the day, whether he knew it or not, he sold you a truck with a junk title. Like the DMV lady said there is a junk title issued somewhere.

I bought a truck like that off of Craigslist. It was a 2004 Silverado Z71. But, I only bid the truck for parts price. I offered the seller $1200 for it. This is craiglist and you don't go big money on a 20 year old vehicle. Everything on the truck worked minus the radio won't emit sound. And the seller said that the truck didn't have any brakes working at all. I added brake fluid after the sale and drove away. The front brakes started working within a mile. LOL

I used to own a tow/repo company in IL. You're right, nothing you can do but part it out with that junk title. The state that let him continue to register it with junk title messed up badly. The only thing I can think of is does the guy own a shop or a scrap yard? If so he may have sent the wrong VIN into the state for another Ram he was junking. It's just a shame to part out a running/driving truck.

im not understanding this. if you bought the truck to replace the other gas truck, why sell the truck and buy another cummins? swap the body from the gas truck onto the cummins frame and thats that

I got a good deal on the cummins since it had some mechanical problems that needed to be fixed, I’ve since fixed them and got it running. If I had spent more on the truck and got stuck with it, then I would swap the bodies, but since I’d only be losing around 1k, it’s just smarter to sell it and move on, and keep the gasser intact

I haven’t heard of that option, but common sense would tell me yes. Like I said in the video, theirs a ton of frame off builds in this state, and they are able to register it, the only difference I can think of is they had a “clean” frame and body, where as mine is a “junk” frame, so the state automatically shoots it down

There are a couple ways around it. Personally, I don't use them. I'd have that truck on the road within the hour however, it's not conventional and takes a lot of prep and knowledge.

So in my state it is possible to get a new vin if your willing to jump a few hoops and yes it is legal but also you might want to check other parts of this truck it could have vin swapped which then you will have a case against the seller

Make out a new bill of sale that you bought the truck as a parts truck. Then go get a bonded title for it.

looks like it is too late now but with everything you have you could ask a judge for a court order for the DMV to produce a title, I have done it several times here in Ohio, just have to have proof that you are not cheating, the BMV has to do what the judge says, you just need to have a good case, looks like you do, I am lucky because I have a judge in the family, but all you have to do is pay court costs and present your case even I have to do that family does not trump the law

I don't have cash but I have a Cummins 24v with 212k. The truck is complete but the cab is rusted and it's been prepared for a cab swap. I have 2- 1/2 ton trucks. 1 is complete and 1 is the frame, engine, axles, and engine (360). I'm in Maine so trading would be very inconvenient. Clean title on the 3/4 ton 24v and all are 4x4.

Title jumping is when someone purchases a car and then resells it without having titled it in their own name. Also known as floating a title, the practice is illegal.

Title flipping is if I was trying to make money on it by never registering it, the whole reason I know of it having a bad title is because I tried to register it…twice, so that’s why it’s now being sold as a parts truck

He can’t sell it, I have a bill of sale from him and the title is signed in my name. The truck doesn’t exist, the state thinks it was scrapped, hence why I’m selling it as a parts truck now without a title

I'm sorry that this happened to you and your hard earned money you spent on the truck, but you said it; should have done a CARFAX. Please people, help yourself out and possibly save thousands of dollars. Always do a CARFAX before buying a vehicle. I did before buying the '04 C5 Corvette I DD now. Bought it from a local car lot in 2022 when used car prices were typically higher; it was cheaper than any of the other cars in the same visible condition. CARFAX showed a "minor" accident on the front and a "minor/moderate" accident on rear from two different owners. The repairs were fine because the car is basically plastic so no dents, no body filler, just new body panels and paint. But the CARFAX totally explained to me why the car was cheaper and the rest is history basically.

Sell it to a friend in another state where salvage titles are used regularly. (Utah).... Then get a title from your friend. Then with that import the truck back into your state.........but there may be another problem. You have let Your DMV see the vin and input it into the system. So it's red flagged now.....

Is a so-called "clean title" something that is fully paid-off no lienholder so direct transfer? That's all I have ever driven is fully paid-off but I have never heard that characterization. So sorry if I appear a bit stupid but I have never had loans of any kind and I must say it is so nice to never be forced to carry in-sur-anc-e u don't want but I do like to be gracious and gloat . . .

You will never have a vin matching truck. The ECU/TCU will always have the vin number of the red truck

Hunter it sounds like your up shit creek without a paddle on this one. Makes me worry as I buy and sell alot of older trucks. My one question is does having the vins not match really bother you at this point? selling the truck at 4500$ ur still taking a loss, at least with a new cab the identity of that truck will be changed even if its insured as a 360 gasser at least you could use it as a truck and now a paper weight. only issue i would see is if this truck happen to get into a wreck KBB would be an issue
