Saying every faction is repeating history (ncr, legion, house), while also driving the point home on not being a blind sheople no matter who you follow. Could consider lonesome road as a giant ad for the yes man ending, as he's got the least amount of sht to talk if youre neutral

I took some time to think about how every faction leader is driving you towards their own, specific political endgoal, and came to the conclusion that all dlcs, and by extension, Ulysses (who is the man that the 3 first dlcs were teasing the player about) is the one who advertises for a true "Chaotic Good" type of ending. No matter how "different" the House, NCR and Legion endings are, they are still "repetitions" of Old World ideologies. Benny however, was all about survival of the fittest and most cunning. His only ideal was "you do you, and fuck everyone else", and so, he kind of advertises a chaotic ending, usually tending towards evil or neutrality, because now you are the top dog and can do whatever. Most "good players" will almost 90% of the time pick the NCR as their faction, but it is with the dlcs that the more naive player might be convinced to take the Chaotic approach to "good". It all pushes you to abandoning the established ways, and carving your own path towards a future that for once, is unknown.

I personally think that Ulysses is just utterly traumatized, broken, searching for meaning. He blames the tragedy of his life on you because you both created and accidentally blew up his adoptive home. He is disillusioned with the Legion, but doesn't switch sides to NCR because he sees the NCR's failures to stop the Legion.

Its funny, but this engagement almost seems like a metaphor for history in and of itself, how often do we progress only to cling to the similar symbols of the past to guide us to the future without realizing how in the past such symbols failed us and others. I look at Neo Nazis or those whom bear the Confederate Flag, Ukrainian Banderites etc and I can't possibly see how they see a future in any of those symbols, they are relics of a failed past and the world itself would never condone it again without a fight, but we forget how often those caught between the war of such symbols are warped and shaped by them. I can sympathize with Ulysses, NCR, Legion even House its just the beginning of a new end, oddly enough he chastizes to the Courier because of his nihilistic indifference to the nations around him, when he himself is taking the most utter nihilistic action, oblivion for nothing. Destroy the West the East conquers and then eats itself, destroy the East, the West moves forward and then becomes engorged with heavier bureaucracy as it reaches out farther and farther. In the end he is trying to create history by repeating it, but we already seen what wiping the slate did in the Fallout universe. Sure mankind adapts of what it knows, but only through trial and error do we ever continue on. Caesar oddly enough realizes this more then the NCR does, that Vegas will change the Legion, though even he is assured he will know how, that is the thing about human history though, things come out of nowhere. I bet if you told a Legionnaire a few hundred years before the Roman Empires collapse that Barbarians from the East would cause it, you'd be laughed at, or if you told King Louis the 16th that a little lieutenant of an artillery regiment would be the next emperor of France, etc. We are our own worse enemy when it comes to fate, we always think what will won't happen, and even if we know it will, we cling to hope that justice will be on our side in the end. Ulysses merely is trying to put fate in his hands, and gamble the lives of millions(I assume) to control the road of history.

History repeating itself and the purpose of symbolism are definitely two heavy themes with Ulysses, and the Lonesome Road DLC overall. I always thought that Ulysses' obsession with history and symbols stemmed from trauma over his tribe's forced integration into the Legion - how he desperately searches for purpose and meaning through history and symbols. He gets so wrapped up in all of that, that he becomes lost for a very long time and cannot find his way home, much like Homer's character that shares his name. The different societies presented in New Vegas (the NCR, House, the Legion) were all written to parallel aspects of modern culture, I believe, to give some commentary on the modern day as well as to prove that War Never Changes. To that end, I don't know if Caesar really knows as much as he thinks he does. It's easy to say that the Legion will stop being a band of marauders and become civilized, but it's quite different to actually do it. In that way, the Legion is really more like the barbarians that tore down Rome rather than the actual Romans... and all they led to was a Dark Age. You are right about reflecting back on history and seeing how sometimes wild shit happens. Just like nobody would have believed some Lt would one day rule France, I bet nobody in New Vegas would have thought a simple Courier would decide the fate of the whole area. And I think that's part of Ulysses' point: that it doesn't matter *who* you are, but what you believe, or rather "what flag you follow" as he would say.

Ulysses is a very complex character and thats why hes my favorite. (Spoilers btw) He has conflicting ideals and tries to reason to himself which ideal holds sway over him. On one hand he still supports Caesar's Legion (somewhat) and on the other he regrets leading them to discovering Hoover Dam.

Don’t interact with NCR, Legion, or any of the Casinos or House missions. I walked past Boulder City and went straight to The Strip just so I could use the Lucky 38 to hold weapons and armor and my companions inside. Only after finishing Lonesome Road and getting my Duster I started completing quests for NCR and the Strip. The Legion I was killing long before then.

This is kind left field but I remember their being a fo4 mod that makes Ulysses a follower but they made him white with dreadlocks and I feel like that was a disrespect to this amazing character in this amazing game, I’m not saying it’s a big issue but idk I feel like Ulysses being black is a huge part of his character, his twisted hair tribe was probably mostly black if not all black, idk the mod reminded me of how the white legs disrespect him by imitating his hair... also he’s voice by a black man so there’s also that lol

I've heard what Gianni Matragrano is capable of. If there's anyone who could replicate Roger Cross's iconic ASMR wet dream of a voice,, it's Gianni. If we could get him, we can get a mod that adds extra dialogue for him. Although do consider this; Since Sneering Imperialist would no doubt spur him on to continue his work, what would Fight The Power do? As the saying goes, if you can't beat them, join them. Maybe Sneering Imperialist would cause him to attack you first out of anger, causing him to lose sight of what's important. Fight The Power however is both Couriers coming to a mutual agreement, which can be achieved by having the perk, as well as either a neutral affiliation to everyone, or a negative affiliation to the NCR, the Brotherhood, The Strip, and so on. In my own words, I can envision the conversation going something like this: "Hey man, I'm really sorry about indirectly nuking your home, although I feel as though I shouldn't have to remind you that, I just deliever mail. That's all I do, and it's all I ever will do. I just kinda developed this bloodlust for the NCR as of recent because I hate taxes. How about we both press the big red button and launch the nukes together, show the wasteland that we're cut from the same cloth, and weave the same suit, deal?" "...Fair enough, I can respect someone who doesn't respect authoritarians, and taxes."

I honestly feel like the means you can talk him down like this path are a lot more meaningful, too. The ability to cite his definition of what makes a home, and how Couriers can build communities feels incredibly sympathetic to his perspectives. You're not just telling him that he's misguided and why you think differently about changing a symbol's meaning, you're telling him that you know what it means to build something up as a fellow Courier, to build communities, homes, and that you _believe_ he can contribute to the future, rather than laying waste to echoes of the past. You're putting your trust in Ulysses as a fellow Courier, and he stands down, more reason to keep living despite having lost his hope previously. It hammers in the poetic motif of _The Two Couriers standing together at The Divide_ and shows that even a neutral Courier has values even if they don't follow a flag - that not all values need to be expressed conventionally. god i love new vegas
