Confused Reviews - Episode 59 - Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)
Wes Craven's New Nightmare (also known simply as New Nightmare) is a 1994 American meta supernatural slasher film written and directed by Wes Craven, creator of 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street. A standalone film and the seventh installment in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, it is not part of the same continuity as previous films, instead portraying Freddy Krueger as a fictional movie villain who invades the real world and haunts the cast and crew involved in the making of the films about him. In the film, Freddy is depicted as closer to what Craven originally intended, being much more menacing and less comical, with an updated attire and appearance.
The film features various people involved in the motion picture industry portraying themselves, including Heather Langenkamp, who is compelled by events in the narrative to reprise her role as Nancy Thompson. New Nightmare features several homages to the original film such as quotes and recreations of the most famous scenes. The film won an International Fantasy Film Award from Fantasporto for Best Screenplay by Craven.
New Nightmare was released on October 14, 1994, grossing $19.8 million at the box office on a budget of $8 million, making it the poorest-performing film in the Nightmare series. However, it received positive reviews from critics, and is considered by many as one of the best Nightmare movies and one of Wes Craven's most enduring films. It was followed by 2003's Freddy vs. Jason, a crossover with the Friday the 13th franchise set in the same continuity as the other Nightmare films.

The thing that sets this apart is that it’s one of the rare horror films that’s fully self-aware And this would set the stage for Craven’s next successful ‘Scream’ series fully taking advantage of the meta self aware humorous approach deconstructing the genre After 6 films that started back in 1984 the ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ movies started to change Craven at one point became very upset that they took his original creation and turned it into a joke But with this film and New Line Cinema he finally gets to bring Freddy Krueger back to his roots making him truly terrifying again It’s also a reunion with original scream queen herself Heather Langenkamp playing herself as well as producers Sarah Risher, Bob Shaye, the late John Saxon, and co-star Robert Englund ‘New Nightmare’ manages to stand out amongst the other sequels being it doesn’t connect to any of them and they fully acknowledge that Heather has stayed out of it despite its popularity and box office success The movie is appropriately scary taking its time to reveal this new version of Freddy, Englund does wonders playing dual roles as himself, the makeup effects are astounding, and the writers come up with a massive mythology regarding this slasher villain Tracy Middendorf as the babysitter Julie is so darn likeable that its a shame what happens to her later The score is also effectively scary and there’s a theme of Hansel & Gretel sprinkled throughout creating a sense of dread as well as atmosphere next to more psychological thrills The ending is also the icing on the cake wrapping up this long battle of good vs evil It’s a shame despite the positive reception this ended up crashing at the box office being forgotten But this paved the way for Craven to make a career comeback in horror with ‘Scream’ following two years later and this movie has definitely gotten more attention with time thanks to its meta layered concepts and many callbacks to the franchise, it was more than just the money it was about finding a creative way to justify its place in the series A clever way to blur the line between fantasy and reality in the Hollywood landscape playing with fan reactions plus moral outrage Heather Langenkamp and Robert Englund give it their all falling back into their respective roles and making the rivalry come alive like they did back in 1984 Thankfully it also ended the franchise on a much better note after ‘Freddy’s Dead’ was met with dismal reception while also setting the first template for legacy follow ups Craven succeeds making his famous creation scary once more

Besides the original A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), The Dream Warriors and Freddy vs Jason, Wes Craven's New Nightmare is my third favorite movie in the Series. Without this movie we would never have gotten the Scream Franchise, one of the best Horror Movie Franchises. Thank you Wes Craven for giving us this movie and R.I.P. 😔

You could review Tom And Jerry: The Movie (1992). I love that movie. I don't think it deserves the hate that it receives from fans who prefer that Tom And Jerry Don't Speak At All. I think it deserves more love since it was a new idea, and they also spoke in a few the original shorts, like The Zoot Cat, And The Million Dollar Cat.

2:41 well actually Every Freddy krueger knife glove is made with real knifes and copper in the shots that requiere the hero glove prop while shots where freddy is with the characthers they need some Stunt gloves incase for the actors saftey.

To me this is Were the series hits it's low point another one being The Remake And I'll explain my reasons why. 1 Its Not An Elm Street movie you can barley call it one because.its in the real world and not in the Elm st universe 2. Freddy Is barley On the screen and gets about a Little bit of screen time The rest of the movie is just boring talk 3. it feels like a Big FU to the fans who loved nightmares 2,3,4,5,6 And To the people who Made Freddy what he is today. That's my reasons for why new Nightmare is not a good movie and only exists just to make a profit like the 2016 Ghostbusters remake.
