And if you guys think this is the end of it, here is more: both "pay rise" and "pay raise" are correct. First is British, second is North American. And "lie" as in "to not tell the truth" is a regular verb: lie, lied, lied. Welcome to English! By the way, from teacher to teacher, your videos are absolutely amazing. Great job!

Great lesson James. About the "pay raise" i think it is also possible "pay rise", since i guess one is American and the other British

I’m a college graduate. I’m an American. I’ve been natively speaking English my entire life. These words and so many others like them are insanely frustrating for me to use properly WHEN SPEAKING. Schooling does not necessarily ever correct your casual speech by teaching you the proper uses, tenses and words. Of course in formal writing and even speech I would have to research which way is correct but it’s such a pity that admittedly, my casual language (the way I talk) has me so insecure about these kind of words. I fear I’ll never get them right. That’s why I’m watching these videos. I want to know the differences so I can use them correctly. Thank you for the lessons!

Nice lesson. Never really had thought about it. In German, "sich hinlegen" (to lie down) and "etwas hinlegen" (to lay something down) sound very similar. And "liegen" means to lie (on the bed e.g.), while "lügen" means (to lie to someone) (you now wish you had the ä, ö and ü to make similiar words different, don't you?). After this lesson, I think I got it. It's actually easy but first you have to know how it works to know how to use it, no matter how easy it is. To lie vs. to lay something is easy to remember. To raise vs. rise vs. arise also was also useful information. Thanks James, as always a good interesting fun lesson. You're a great and motivating teachr. :)
