I see it in a lot of old people too, but I think it's because they're so used to saying mom or mommy for their kids when talking about their wife that it just sticks. My grandparents would call each other 'ma' and 'pa' all the time. Or even 'opa' and 'oma' (I'm Dutch) for the grandkids. If they don't have kids, it's weird though....
