In the U.S. today, 12 million seniors are dealing with food insecurity. Half of Americans age 65 and older are living on less than $30,000 per year. This is absurd. Congress must expand Social Security.

Social Security taxes should be paid on much larger amounts than current law requires. And there are massive loopholes for wealthy individuals that classify most of their income as “unearned” so no payroll taxes are charged. Those need to be closed.

Absolutely, Benjamin Franklin made an excellent argument for the democratization of wealth and property in 1783: "The Remissness of our People in Paying Taxes is highly blameable; the Unwillingness to pay them is still more so. I see, in some Resolutions of Town Meetings, a Remonstrance against giving Congress a Power to take, as they call it, the People's Money out of their Pockets, tho' only to pay the Interest and Principal of Debts duly contracted. They seem to mistake the Point. Money, justly due from the People, is their Creditors' Money, and no longer the Money of the People, who, if they withold it, should be compell'd to pay by some Law." "All Property, indeed, except the Savage's temporary Cabin, his Bow, his Matchcoat, and other little Acquisitions, absolutely necessary for his Subsistence, seems to me to be the Creature of public Convention. Hence the Public has the Right of Regulating Descents, and all other Conveyances of Property, and even of limiting the Quantity and the Uses of it. All the Property that is necessary to a Man, for the Conservation of the Individual and the Propagation of the Species, is his natural Right, which none can justly deprive him of: But all Property superfluous to such purposes is the Property of the Publick, who, by their Laws, have created it, and who may therefore by other Laws dispose of it, whenever the Welfare of the Publick shall demand such Disposition. He that does not like civil Society on these Terms, let him retire and live among Savages. He can have no right to the benefits of Society, who will not pay his Club towards the Support of it."

Roll backs perhaps as a HUD program to just actual inflation tied to what properties originally rented at. The rental market is trying to tie itself to mortgages and bubble real estate values vs what is affordable for people generally but especially retirees and anyone nearing retirement. I agree completely with Bernie. Social Security has also nothing to do with socialism. Social is caring for the people and especially for the ones that need it the most. As a Dutchman with a lot of American friends I see the enormous difference between our countries. I had friends were man and wife had to work till the age of 74. He died age 76 and she followed him 2 years later. All because there was no good social security. I’am 65 now and could retire last October after 42 years of working. My income now is 68% of my last salary. When I turn 67 the tax rate will be lowered and it will be 73%. For that I payed my whole working live between 38 and 60 % tax. The amount of tax depends on ones income. It is ridiculous that in the US the wealthy people pay almost no tax and the poor people rely on food stamps. Still people in the US are almost allergic for the term tax. Social behavior is also a Christian and religious value. I miss that in a country where the name GOD is mentioned on the currency. The old “E Pluribus Unum” would serve better. God bless America.

One thing we Need to do is raise the amount paid into social security for every com0any that does nit offer a pension plan that is not part of the wall street 401ks or lra's. They should pay 25% into social security as there contribution to retirement. One thing that is good about this idea is that like the 2008 collapse of the world economy we lost pensions and one fact is they get stolen a lot more than you think. Companies that do offer a pension plan should have to hand over the money to the government for safe keeping. While pensions disappeared back in the 2008 debacle social security still sent out checks while the rich CEO's got 60 million dollar golden parachutes. Many people lost everything and many are now living in cars or on the streets. If you have BIG business you have to have BIG Government regulations to control them because they seem to have no c9ntrol over themselves, which the last 40 years plus has proven.

I don't know if his solution is viable, but something needs to be done. Social Security really does need to be fixed!. Pensions have either dried up or are very small. Many people work decades sometimes doing back breaking work, only to end up poor. At least Sen. Sanders is trying to do something. I'm very disappointed that neither Trump nor Biden has actually done something positive regarding Social Security. Sen Sanders should be surrounded by people backing his plan. Guess that the other progressives, especially the young ones, don't care about older people. True! As a Democrat and a Senior Citizen I am very disappointed in my party and Pres. Biden! Like many Seniors I vote every time the poles open and I'll certainly factor in this topic when I vote.

I believe it is imperative that we address these social safety nets before the next wave of disruptive technologies emerges. With automation, AI, and robotics reaching new heights, we cannot afford to be reactive in devising a plan for the potential displacement of millions of jobs.

Wrong Mr Sanders. People who are wealthy do not need social security. The program can be quickly modified by passing a law to block people making more than $400K a year from withdrawing anything from Social Security. Shrink the number of people getting checks. But also in that quick law change, remove the annual maximum income requiring deductions from paychecks. It is counter-intuitive that high earners don't pay their equal percentage of income into the program, but still get to take the largest checks out of the program when they reach their eligible age. And of course, in more comprehensive legislation, change the rules that allow CEO's to reclassify workers into independent contractors, to avoid paying the employer's share into the SS program. It could even be needed to charge social security fee equivalents on goods and services IMPORTED into the US, since CEO's often outsource work to those other countries just to avoid the employer's share of SS contributions.

You wouldn't possibly be involved in these "acounting errors" by any chance would you. Roll back the outrageous tax breaks given to corporations and the wealthy, and cut down the bloated defense budget as well. This money belongs to the American people. Not corporations, the weathly (who have gotten wealthy in large part with our money and at our expense), nor does it belong to defense contractors. Non of them are entitled to it. The American people are.

The poverty level right now is $1400 and change per month. There are many senior citizens whose Social Security is a lot less than that. Which also means that they rely on subsidies by either charity or government for their housing, their food, their medical care. so they’re getting the money, one way or another but they’re having to jump through hoops and apply for programs. They don’t understand and many of them still at this point do not own or know how to use a computer, let alone a cell phone. That will change over the next two decades, however, most government agencies want you to apply online. Which means they have to hire a broker or an accountant or a lawyer to do these things for them. How much more do our senior citizens have to pay just to survive?

The average American will get a terrible return on 6.2% of their income for 40++ years, which is really 12.4% of their income, because their employers must also pay the 6.2%. Someone earning $10,000,000/year and their employers should also be required to pay the 6.2% of the entire 10,000,000, not only up to the $160,000 limit, so that millionaires can also receive a terrible return on investment on their money as well.

@@rayrussell6258 Seems what you don't understand is two things. 1. Entitlements are social security. When he said we need to look into cutting entitlements thats social security. 2. You don't seem to understand Trump often takes two sides of an issue it depends on who he is talking too. Former President Donald Trump on Monday suggested he was open to making cuts to Social Security and Medicare after opposing touching the entitlement programs and attacking his GOP presidential primary rivals over the issue. Trump was asked in an interview with CNBC whether he had changed his outlook on how to handle entitlement programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid in order to tackle the national debt. “There is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting and in terms of also the theft and the bad management of entitlements,” Trump said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” He added: “There’s tremendous amounts of things and numbers of things you can do.”
