Voters overwhelmingly believe members of Congress shouldn’t be able to trade stocks, but some lawmakers are still making a fortune on the market. We broke down Congressional stock trading, from conveniently timed trades to new bills trying to ban it.

You're right, it can't be passed if they don't want it to pass... but what if I told you they WANT to pass it? We can see that they are crafting a narrative to rile up public opinion against lawmakers owning stocks... playing right into their hands. On July 28th, news came out that the bill is finally going to be proposed in August and voted on in as early as September. Once the bill is passed, lawmakers will have a convenient excuse to sell without spooking the market. Then we will enter a multi year/decade bear market that rivals the Great Depression. In Fall 2021, the Federal Reserve also banned their officials from owning stocks, similarly citing "ethical issues". They all know. They're all looking for an exit before the music stops. Watch there be a final strong rally with extreme media hype, drawing retail into the crash. You're welcome.

The ban doesn’t work if their families also own large companies and holdings. In fact, ban their entire families/friends/connections from having such assets. A public servant must never be able to amass such disgusting amounts of wealth whether it be through themselves or their connections.

If elected officials push back on a complete ban on trading then they should just implement the same system that regulates financial analysts. Financial analysts are allowed to trade personally but there are strict guidelines placed to prevent insider trading and frontrunning. They aren't allowed to trade blacklisted companies, have to disclose personal trades and are not allowed to influence or provide preferential trade information to close relatives and spouses. It could work the same way for elected officials, have companies that are under congressional investigation, in the same industry they oversee etc blacklisted for these officials, have them disclose personal trades and actually have a punishment fit the crime, make it so that trading gives such a tight margin after all the time and effort put into compliance that only the most dedicated will even think about it. In this case they can't complain about not having the means to make money, they do, but it takes an inordinate amount of time and effort.

it's unethical but they're not exactly damaging the economy or a company by trading these small sums (like a CEO of a company could damage the company he works for, for example), and as they are individuals they cannot provide research for every single one of their trades. In any case a ban on trading single stocks could be a good solution, but you will never prevent people from dumping stock before something like a covid crisis, which was purely speculative in any case.

Congressmen having inside knowledge in the stock market is just another one of those controversial issues where honestly I'll never think there will a true solution too. If they stop congressmen, their kids will trade for them, or their relatives, or maybe even their friends. Imagine a business owner, and his company is growing exponentially and the money is flushing in. The incentive to give yourself a raise more than any person is awfully appealing. So they do it, the congressmen will do it, and if you have any power over wealth there will always be those selfish corrupt individuals who will find some way to skim off more than they deserve.
