A demonstration how to connect USB interface with professional microphone and guitar/bass to record high-quality video&audio to Android smartphones using OpenCamera app (freeware).
Connect smartphone to audio interface, using compatible cable - in this example, I used its standard audio interfaces USB cable and a converter, USB A - USB C adapter.
To directly connect USB interface to Android mobile phone, use USB B (male) to USB C (male) cable or any cable compatible both with your interface and smartphone.
If your smartphone have input connector different than USB C, find a cable accordingly - same as with audio interface (some uses USB mini or USB micro connector, or USB C).
When connected, audio interface will power on.
As some interfaces are USB-powered only, it will drain your smartphone - your mileage may vary from as low as 15 minutes to hour or more.
Check Video Settings in OpenCamera app, set Audio source to DEFAULT and Audio Channels to MONO or STEREO (see the "Note" below)
Connect dynamic microphone, instrument or external audio device to audio interface and check input levels.
Using a condenser microphone without using external phantom power (48V) source may not work or will drain the cell phone battery very quickly.
And finally - press RECORD and... play!
Note: as USB interfaces record separate L/R channels - as can be seen in this example, vocal is in left and bass in right channel - so Open Camera can optionally record mono audio, making such two-separated-channel audio more listening-friendly.
Choose recording mode in OpenCamera settings (Video settings - Audio Channels - Mono/Stereo)
Process:
- install OpenCamera app
- open app:
* set Video Settings - Audio Source - DEFAULT.
* set Audio Channels to MONO or STEREO (see the "Note" above)
- connect USB audio interface to a phone (via adapter or directly via compatible cable)
- connect audio sources to audio inteface - microphones, guitars, instruments, processors, mixer, etc...
- press Record
Equipment used:
* Sony Xperia XZ Premium (Android 9.0)
* Behringer U-Phoria UMC204HD
* USB-A to USB-C adapter
* OpenCamera app (Google Play: play.google.co....
mic: Sennheiser e845s

Thanks for showing, how easy that was! Now I can pick up my bass, and play in the Bush (or wherever), with almost nothing to carry! Like this: Plug the phone in the interface. (USB cable) / Plug the Interface output to a good bluetooth speaker (Like JBL Xtreme 3, like 2Kg.), that has an Aux-In port. (Cable Jack to miniJack) / Plug the bass (guitar, keyboard, whatever) in the Interface. / Done! Now I also can play along with music on my phone! And all I have to carry is my bass + 3 Kg stuff! Note, I haven't tried the JBL Xtreme 3 yet, but I suppose it will work really well. The Interface will probably amplify enough to get the JBL going. And everybody loves it's powerfull bass sound. But I don't know yet. Make sure, your Bluetooth-model has an Aux-port. (Not all JBL's have them) Note: You can't use your phone's Bluetooth here, because that bypasses the Interface. And you need the interface for amplification and high impedance.

@@davormaricic Thanks! Yes, bassists can finally travel light now! 3 Kg is not much. :-) Audio Interface (external Soundcard) + good bluetooth speaker does the trick. A few tips: Power. A soundcard gets 5 Volt power via it's USB plug. Two ways to power it: ******* A. Without any connection to the power net : - You can connect it to the bluetooth speaker, if it has a USB port. (if you buy one: Look if it has one!) - You can also connect it to your android phone. Then you will need a small adapter from USB-female to Micro-USB-male, or USB-C (depending on your phone) - You can also use a power-bank, or anything with a USB-port. B. Using the power net: - Connect it to a phone-charger. Then you will need a different small adapter: from Micro-USB-female, or USB-C-female (depending on your phone), to a plug that fits in your soundcard. That may be USB-A or USB-B. - Use a small Net-adapter with a USB output port. - Soundcards can often be powered with a 5 Volt net-adapter, with a 3.5 mm power plug. Note: not all soundcarts support standalone-use. Some do need a computer or phone to work. Playing via Bluetooth or via Line-In (AUX)? ****************************************** Bluetooth has delay! (Latency). So it takes a split second, before you actually hear, what you are playing. This is very confusing and horrible! So I always use a wired connection from the soundcard's output (usually RCA, or 6.5 mm Jack) to the Line-In (AUX) of the bluetooth speaker (Usually 3.5 mm mini-Jack). NOTE: even AUX can have delay, but much less. NOTE: If you have to buy a bluetooth speaker, make sure, it has a Line-In connection (AUX)!! Many don't! Also look, if it has a USB-port. Just playing bass (or guitar): ***************************** 1. Power the soundcard. 2. Connect it's output to the bluetooth speaker. 3. Plug your instrument into the sondcard. 4. Play anywhere, without the need of netpower! Play along with music from your phone. **************************************** Now I plug the soundcards USB cable into the Phone. (so not in the Bluetooth speaker) The soundcard now functions as a real soundcard, where you can mix the music from the Phone and your play. Connect the output of the soundcard to the AUX of the bluetooth speaker. Connect your instrument to the soundcard, and enyoy playing.. :-) Using just a bluetooth speaker, so without a soundcard? ********************************************************* Yes, you can just plug your instrument in the bluetooth speaker! Keyboards may sound good, but basses and guitars will not. The 'impedance' of AUX may be too low for the pick-ups. Also, the sensitivity of AUX is low. So perhaps it will work, if you raise the Volume to max. A better solution is to use an effect pedal, any kind of pedal. They have a high-impedance. Even better is a pre-amp pedal. But Note: many pedals are 'true bypass'. That means, if you switch the pedal off, they directly connect to the output. That means, you will have that low Impedance of AUX again. That may be a big difference. So better pick a pedal. you like.. What Bluetooth Speaker? ************************ A am an audio technician, but seriously.. I only have ONE experience with this! It was a small JBL, and it worked well on low volume. So I do know, what I am talking about, but I don't know what speakers sound good for bass? I am awaiting my JBL Xtreme 3. (Xtreme 5 has no AUX, and the JBL Boomboxes are to big to carry.) Xtreme 3 is wellknown for a good bass, so I'll find out. I will let you know. Street musicians. ***************** They really love to have light weight gear, without any netpower source. But they are mostly poor. They can play without a soundcard. They can also use some old effect pedal to get more volume and sound. But if you want to play along with music or rhythms from your phone or mp3-player, buy a cheap soundcard. Make sure, you can mix the music and your play. And I may not like to mention it, but you can get a Xtreme3-clone at Aliexpress for 100 dollar/euro or so..

Got a problem.. A few years ago, I had good results, using the AUX input of a bluetooth speaker for bass guitar. But this week I tried two, and with both there was a bit of delay between my play, and the sound from the speaker. It was just a fraction of a second, but that was enough to be really anoying. So I won't rewrite my story, nor move it here, until I find a bluetooth speaker without delay..

So, you have two options: A. to mix it all on outboard mixer and record stereo to OpenCamera via soundcard B. to record audio on channel 1 (Left) and instrument on channel 2 (Right) of the soundcard, and set audio input in OpenCamera to mono. Both ways you'll get a quality sound, but using external mixer you'll get stereo as well.

has anyone tried to output this chain on a active speaker? it would be awesome to be able to listen in real time and to make small live gigs
@davormaricic
@davormaricic Жыл бұрын
Setup like this could be connect to active speakers, an amp or a mixer with no problem via Line Out on audio interface (in fact, while recording this I was monitoring on Kurzweil KS-40A active powered monitor speakers). Keep in mind that usage for a live gig is very limited, by a smartphone battery lifespan. Also there is no problem to feed a signal out of a mixer to audio interface and record or stream live gig using Android and interface.

@@davormaricic thx for the answer im guessing if i use line out on audio interface, it would not come chained with whatever fx/mix im using on the smartphone, because the chain is : guitar/mic > interface > smartphone > active speaker . as I wrote in note: USB interfaces record separate L/R channels - as can be seen in this example, vocal is in left and bass in right channel - so if you want to record only one channel and have it in central position (both speakers), Open Camera can optionally record mono audio, making such two-separated-channel audio more listening-friendly. Choose recording mode in OpenCamera settings (Video settings - Audio Channels - Mono/Stereo)

Try without a hub, for a start, some hubs have chip that interferes with recognizing audio interface as such. It is best to use proper USB A->C cable or adapter (even maybe all adapters won't work). Mine configuration also works with Mate Pro P20, so I can't see reason why yours would not work on proper configuration.

You can use n-Track studio 9. It turns your android phone into a full daw with post editing capabilities. You can also use an interface with 8 channels if you choose. (Like the 8 channel version of the behringer in this video, or step up to the Scarlett 18i20 3rd gen.) From 8 channels, you can multitrack 3 drum mics, 1 piano, 1 bass, 1 guitar, and 2 vocal. With adat connections on the back, you can get more channels. Also, the behringer xr18 allows for this because its actually a usb mixer interface with multitracking capabilities that you can control (via an onboard wifi connection) to a seperate tablet or phone to control the mixing. I own it. It simply works. But, latency can be an issue during overdubs. But if you can get it in one take, you are good to go. If a one take recording is out of the question, you can also bounce down a quick recording of where you need to fix it, then drop it on a new project. Then do your fix. Copy the fix, and then add it to your origional project with no latency. Its a pain, but it works.

Normally, stereo inputs are separated to a left and right channel, as shown in video, so of mic is on one inout, it os normal that it will be on only one channel. You can't have two different inputs in "the middle" if you record stereo from two inputs without using a mixer, and there is no mixer - only audio interface. Using OpenCamera app settings, you can record audio on mono track, where both channnels are "in the middle".
