I know this is old, but it's a great resource. Your discussion of routing and receiving the clock signal was a huge help in troubleshooting a setup. We, like many, use the outputs on the S16s for IEM mixes, so sending the signals back starting at 17 (instead of 1) is brilliant for letting us seamlessly go to a FOH and Monitor setup. great video! we use a x32 console as foh mixer with a x32-core + 2x s16 as monitoring mixer. what we never succeded to do is how to transfer the foh talkback signal to the x32-core on the stage in order to transfer it to the stage monitor and p16. thanks for your help.

Question, so in a set up with a FOH board and Broadcast board.. Which console is providing the p16 audio? I believe you said the broadcast console. Will that be bc you are running the ultranet connection directly from the console or can I still use the ultranet connected to the snake?

In this video, we're connecting a FOH and Monitor mixer so the Monitor mixer would provide ultranet connection. If you're connecting FOH and Broadcast, ideally you would want to send those from FOH. Technically, either could work, but logistically, I think it would be easier to do from FOH. For this situation to work, you would need to have separate connections for Broadcast and your digital snake(s). Maybe the AES50-A port at FOH is connected to the snake, while B is connected to Broadcast. Hope that helps :)

Tod, do you know how to use internal effects only from one board into another and use the other board's effects. I am going from Beheringer effects into a Mackie to use the effects. My board, Beheringer is not workable for use but the effects are working.

Our stage boxes are up front and we are running from the AES50-A to those and back as you show here. As opposed to coming out of the B side of the stage box, could I not go from the AES60-B on my FOH mixer to the X32 rack? Is there away for the signal coming back to the board to go through the board via AES50 - A for FOH mixing and then out the Mixer's Aes50 B to the AES 50 A of my rack X32?

If I remember correctly, in this video, we were using the local outputs of the monitor console for the ears independently while the outputs from the FOH console were coming out of the digital snakes. I hope that answers your question. Haha. Let me know if you have any further questions. -Chad

Yes and no. You could send a left and right feed from 1 board into the 2nd. This would work if you're only mixing front-of-house but wouldn't really work for mixing monitors from the same console. -Chad

I'll need to make a detailed video soon, but to get you going, if you set your mixers exactly as I showed, then Outputs 1-6 of your FOH console will show up on Aux channels 1-6 on your Monitor console. You can assign a mix to one of these outputs and have the Talkback mic send to that mix. Same thing for your cd player. Set up a mix (I usually make a "Miscellaneous" mix) and send it to one of those outputs. Hope that gets you going :) -Chad

It's one question but it is a somewhat massive question. Haha! If you are using the Rack as outputs only, then its actually the same as the video. The only difference is that you will not have 16 XLR outs. Instead, you will have 8 XLR outs and 6 TRS outs. If you need to use the X32 as a stage box as well, while having gain control at FOH, you will need to route those channels to FOH and select "HA Remote" on the Rack (Setup->Preamps). From there, you will essentially route the audio back to the Rack from the X32 like in the video. I hope this all makes sense. May have to be another video someday in the future. -Chad

Really you just need a bigger, more powerful board for that kind of thing. Otherwise, you could have essentially 2 separate monitor consoles. They wouldn't be 100% communicating together. For example, to EQ an acoustic on 1 board, you may have to separately eq that same channel on the other board. May not be a big problem for many churches but it wouldn't be a full solution.

Hi Chad. Thanks for your video. I have a specific question. My friend has an X32. He has a small sound company and runs sound for local bands, churches and events. I have an X32 for personal use and for doing demos for clients , My X32 has the X-Live card installed. So my friend has asked me to come out on certain shows and do recordings . This will be a regular thing. My friend when he runs FOH on his X32 all inputs are LOCAL. He does NOT have any snakes. My question is , how can we hook up both X32’s together so that his X32 runs FOH and I get a split so I can have a total independent control to my X-Live card ? After I have received all the tracking , I’d like to have my X32 run as a stand alone unit , so I can do a mixdown, add effects, dynamics etc . No computer needed. I hope I explained it well. Hey Robert, So, you can connect the mixers and you can have MOSTLY independent control, however, the one thing you cannot have control over is the analog gain. You would have digital trim at your mixer. The only way to have control over that as well would be to have an analog split in line. This isn't necessarily a big deal if your buddy is good at setting gain correctly and avoids clipping. Otherwise, you should be able to run at least 200ft of Cat5 (shielded with EtherCon connectors) between the mixers and he can share his inputs with you. For example, if you're connected like this: FOH(B) -> (B)Record He can go to Routing -> AES50-B and send you his Local inputs 1-32. On your end, Routing -> Home and set your inputs as AES50 B 1-32 You'd set your Card outputs the same way. If you also need his Aux inputs for any reason, that can be done as well but with slightly modified patching on both ends. A great tutorial! However would like to know if connecting 2 nos X32 and 2 nos S32 ( or 1 S32, 1 S16??) , will this set up give me more than 16 separate individual monitor mix? I am in need of 24 nos separate mix out! My second question is: if I am finally able to create more than 16 monitor mix by connecting 2 X32s + 2 S32s ( 1 S32, 1 S16) , I am assuming volume control can be done from the master X32 whereas individual mix ( say 1 -24 mix out) can be controlled from both Master and Slave X32s! I just dont want to spend money for costlier mixer-such as Yamaha DM7 that has more mix outs! The above need has come as a band needs 7 stereo IEMs that are consuming all of my monitor mix outs! No, but if you need to do that on a regular basis, it may be time to look at getting a bigger console :( The most basic way to do it would be to send a stereo pair from the extension X32 into 2 channels on the master X32. You could do this with analog or digital connections. It would work but it would become much trickier if you need to share those inputs with in-ear monitors as well. I'm not saying it couldn't be done but it wouldn't be ideal for every situation. Sorry I couldn't give you the answer you were hoping for. Great video! Ive got a question for our setup: 1 x32core for MON and 1 x32c for FOH. 2 s16 racks. The x32core is the master. L-R on out 15-16. They are hooked up and works great, only problem: The first 8 outputs are sending to 4 stereo IEM which I can control with the core MON mixer, but we have 5 IEM which means the last IEM (5) is hooked up to outputs 9-10 on the second s16 and he needs to create his mix on the x32compact for FOH. Hope you understand. I didnt get the routing to work for the last IEM... Greetings from Norway

I've got some Norwegian friends and I'd say you're doing very well with your english :) Off the top of my head, if you're only sending 2-6 signals from FOH (left,right, maybe a wedge or two, or a talkback) what I would do is send those signals out AES50 A starting out channel 1. Then from your monitor console, you can do an aux-in remap to receive AES50 A 1-6 (assuming your connected through the A port). Now all of your feeds from FOH will appear on the aux channels of your monitor console. From there, you can route those channels to your S16s. Select a tap point of IN/LC so you can leave those channels muted, and somewhat hidden with the Aux inputs and you should be good to go. Check out this follow up video I made. I've got everything working except for one thing. I was running p16s from the FOH but now am trying to run then from the broadcast console. I am getting signal to the p16 but none of the routing is right on the p16. I have it set to send a vocal to channel 1 but instead have piano coming out. Any experience with this problem? Daniel McLendon P16’s operate by using the AES channels 33-48. So, if they are connected to FOH console but you want to run them from Broadcast, you will need to route the Broadcast P16 outputs through AES to the FOH and then change the AES outs 33-48 at FOH to pass on those channels from Broadcast to the P16s. I always try to imagine my audio like water flowing through pipes. That’s what helps me.

In other words have two independent mixers for front of house sending output signals through common stage box outputs i.e. bus 15/16 on both consoles be your left and right outs If so can you do a video with this type of example. I understand the P16's won't have full capability but you have everything else.

You could probably do some tricky routing and have a group of 8 come from one mixer and 8 from the other but you wouldn't really be able to have the mixers "share" outputs. You could send a mix from 1 mixer into the other and mix audio that way if you need more channels. I hope that answers your question :) -Chad

In this particular setup, by default the FOH console will have analog gain control while the monitor console will only show digital trim (which only affects monitors). Yep. This would work great for you. Like I'm doing in the video, you can send a feed to broadcast from FOH to include things like your Aux inputs or, if there's not a Broadcast engineer available, you could send a board mix. All kinds of fun goodies :)

In That case how can you set it up so that one can control preamp gain while the other one can only trimm. I am setting up a 2nd x32 as a broadcast mixer. Is there a way that I can playback virtual soundcheck on FOH console and have it also play on the broadcast x32? When I tried it the broadcast x32 did not playback the virtual soundcheck. Not sure if you you had any ideas?

Daniel McLendon Hey Daniel! Yes, you can play a virtual soundcheck at FOH and have it also play at Broadcast at the same time. In the example of this video, to play a virtual soundcheck at FOH, you would go to Routing - > Home and change your inputs to Card 1-32. To then pass those signals to Broadcast, if you’re connected via AES50 port A of the FOH console, on that console, you would go to Routing -> AES50-A and (in this video) change outputs 17-48 to send Card 1-32.

We record our services in ableton in multitrack format. The Ableton computer is in the Sanctuary booth. We would like to be able to playback a recording through the Sanctuary X32 to the Broadcast X32 for training purposes. We've tried setting up the routing on the Sanctuary X32 several different ways and so far have not gotten it to work. We connected our X32s together via connecting the Broadcast X32 to the AES50 B network on the Sanctuary X32 running to the Broadcast X32 AES50 A network.

You need to create snippets for your routing for virtual soundcheck and live modes. When you do a virtual soundcheck from your Sanctuary X32, not only will your inputs change to the Card channels but (the part you’re missing is) you also need to go to the outputs page for AES50-B and make sure you’re sending Card channels during virtual soundcheck instead of the inputs from the stage.

I'd like to know if the following scenario would work with x32. We have 2 worship centers and 1 control/broadcast room all in the same building. Worship is at different times at both locations and the desire is to have the control room be the central broadcast location for each service. Each worship center would have 16/8 digital snake. I would like to have 3 x32 consoles. One in each worship center and one in the control room. How do I set up the wiring for AES50 a/b for each worship center to send split signals of each channel to control room? How would that be routed at each board at the FOH in each worship center and routed to receive at the x32 in the control room from each location? Also, would the control room board then be the master genlock time sync? Finally, one worship center would have 6 personal mixing devices on stage for the musicians. Any help would be appreciated.

Osarobo Odeh You should absolutely have a shielded cable with EtherCON connectors. Unfortunately, that is a major issue with the X32 family. It is very easy to fry your AES50 ports with an unshielded cable.

I have a Midas M32 for FOH and Behringer x32 for Broadcast with a DL32 Snake, FOH is connected to AES50a of the snake and Broadcast to AES50b of the same snake and after extensive experimentation etc. I came to the conclusion that the signal does not return back on the cat5E AES50b out from the FOH through the Snake to the AES50b to the broadcast mix like your illustration suggests, pretty much the Broadcast mix simply taps from the gain side of the snake out to AES50b to the broadcast mixer so the FOH only controls the headamps and doesnt send no signal back to the Broadcast mixer, Maybe your example only works for X32 and the S16 Snake...

It seems that it works with 16 channel snakes (S16 or DL16) but not 32 channels versions. Either way, this is an out dated video. Hello Chad thanks for all you do.... I have a Wing (FOH) connected to a S32 daisy chained to a S16.. I have a broadcast X32 connected to my Wing through the AES50 B port on my Wing and A port on the X32. I am able to send any channels I want to the X32 with no problem connected like this. I now have to move the broadcast X32 out of the sanctuary which is a much farther run The stageboxes are closer to the new X32 location There is about 600 feet of cable between my FOH mixer and my Broadcast mixer I have read that roughly 300 ft is the maximum run for 1 AES50 cable I was wondering if a switch would connect the two cables or a POE extender or according to this video if I came out of the B port on the S16 Sorry for the complicated scenario Thanks in advance

You cannot use just any switch. It has to be compatible with AES50. Check out the Klark Teknik DN9610 AES50 Repeater. Hope that helps! -Chad

Hey Shermman, in this original video, we were in a situation that happened to have 2 S16’s. Last I checked, this configuration does not work properly if you are using an S32. If you haven’t already, you really want to watch the latest update to this video - m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGqmqqR_edObbsU With the instructions in that part 3 video, you can use one snake AND have more bidirectional communication options between the two mixers :) Hope that helps -Chad

I GREATLY appreciate this video. I'm still not sure that I am following 100%. We have an X32 as our main mixer and we use an S32 FOH box. we just bought an X32 producer to use for our live broadcasts. I have a cat6 X32 (A) to S32 (A) and a 2nd cat6 X32P (A) to S32 (B). Routing on X32 is set to "internal" and the X32P is set to (A). I'm useing the SAME sceen set up on X32 that I am on X32P. I know that I am missing a routing configuration because I'm not getting any sound from the outputs into my SlingStudio for our live broadcast. We have been using a monitor output from the main board into the sling but it is hard to get a good sound in the room and on the broadcast at the same time. we cant EQ our broadcast and room properly. Any help on this would be amazing.

I'm using 2 X32s and 2 S16s, One board for FOH and the other for MON mixes. After struggling to get the setup to work, I ended up with MON board AES50 "A" to AES50 "A" on the 1st S16 (with it daisy chained from AES50 "B" to AES50 "A" of the 2nd S16) and then connecting to FOH by connecting MON board AES50 "B" to FOH board AES50 "A"... Everything works for the most part, BUT I couldn't get Talk-Back to the stage through the MON board or Audio Playback during breaks. I think I need to reconfigure my setup like yours... Watching your video I picked up a few things; e.g., the way you put 17 - 48 from the FOH board on 1-32 on the MON board, and the use of the FOH Aux Ins for Talk-Back and playing audio for FOH. Can you please expand on sending the Aux Ins to the MON board and routing them to P-16s??? Also, how do you make sure you cab control volumes/gains independently from both the FOH and MON boards???

Great questions! 1 - If you're going to have the S16's connect to the Monitor Console, rather than the FOH Console, then Monitors will have analog gain control and FOH will have digital trim. If you don't like this, you can either configure FOH to connect to the S16's or you can enable "HA Remote-AES50-B" on the Monitor console (allowing the FOH console to control all the pre-amps connected to the Monitor console). This option is found in Setup->Preamps. 2 - To send Talkback from FOH to Mons with your current setup, you would need to somehow send Talkback out of one of your Outs 1-6 (either through a bus or a direct out). From there, with your setup, the Mon console will need to set "Aux In Remap" to "AES50 B1-6". Now you are sending up to 6 feeds from FOH to Mons. Now you can direct out the Talkback to P16s from the Mon board. There are many ways to do these, but these are the ways I probably would :) I hope this helps. x32 at FOH, x32 at broadcast (coming soon!), 2x S16's racked on stage (and two more in storage fwiw...). We do NOT have a monitors console, we use P16's and thus need Ultranet signals routing back from FOH to S16's. In this case, the best (only?) option for the broadcast console is coming off of the B port of the FOH console? Since the AES-A's outs are carrying S16 out's 1-16, and Ultranet outs 1-16, not leaving enough channels (32 of 48 taken) for all FOH channels to route through to Broadcast x32? Also worth noting that we will also need / want local FOH Aux inputs (from Pro Presenter computer at FOH) to route to broadcast, meaning the only viable route REALLY is using AES-B off of FOH back to broadcast via it's own cat5, pushing aes-A channels 1-32 as well as local aux bank via that cable. Thanks for confirming if the above is correct and/or if there are any incorrect assumptions here!

It's funny, someone messaged me the other day with almost the exact same situation. Yes, the best way for you to do what you need to do is to use one of FOH's AES ports to connect to the digital snakes and to use the other port to connect directly to the Broadcast console. Ascension Worship - #TechTuesday Thank you! Worth asking if there's anything funky involved with routing the Aux layer to include the remapped Aux 1-4... Will i just send "Aux 1-6/Mon" and it will pull in the remapped channels there? (4x remapped aux channels are XLR in local on the x32, 2x Aux channels are std aux in 1/4"). Appreciate the help!

I think I discuss this in the video - when you are sending audio through the FOH console, from the snakes, to the Broadcast console, you will want to send them out starting on channel 9 not channel 1. The reason for this is that when you set up the aux in remap on the Broadcast console, you are limited to the first bank of inputs. So from the FOH console, send your Aux inputs out of channels 1-8. Other than that, it's super straight forward. Have fun! -Chad

From a networking standpoint, in this particular setup there are no outputs from the monitor console (to other consoles). Yes... monitor outputs including the IEM outputs. are they from the physical's on the monitor console - or the DL32? Id like to use this for a split rig so the Aux outputs would be from the monitor console.

In this particular video, the outputs are coming directly off the console. To have them come out of the DL32 would require the Monitor console to be the master, meaning that the DL32's A port is connected to the Monitor console. I'm not fully understanding your question. Sorry, I got lost about half way. The problem I am having is we have X32 board to single S16 Stage box. No one wants to address the "basic" set up for that configuration. Though simple it would be helpful to hear what that set up would be. Also how the basic monitor, and I mean basic, set up would be. I have a situation where I have 2 "local" monitors that I want to keep. Plus the monitor set up from the stage box. It was suggested that I route the local monitors to the second layer, channels allowing channels 1-8 from the stage box to be 1-8 on the board. You input would be appreciated.

Hey Chris, The absolute basic setup for a single S16 can be found by clicking the Routing button (next to the screen). With the home tab (within the routing screen) selected, you can see where you can select what inputs you'll be using. A fresh X32 will be set to Local inputs 1-32. If your S16 is connected to the A port on the back of the board, then you will want to change some of your inputs to AES50 A1-8 and AES50 A9-16. Now, those inputs will be routed to the groups of 8 you chose. When you say "local monitors" are you referring to stage wedges? Please clarify this part of your question and I'll do what I can to provide a simple answer :) -Chad
