Love this. You may recall my conversation via FB pages, regarding getting my gain staging and the DCAs correctly set up. I found this interesting how much control you have over the individual components of the mix. I don't have that today, thus leading to my question over "there". I like how you think about the mix. I'll get there soon. Thanks for your content. I appreciate you chiming in on my question of a week ago.

Hey Chad! Thanks for the video man! great stuff! Question: Do you send the signals to the in ears post dynamics, EQ, etc.? We've been using this exact setup but the individual channel EQ's are really bad. Some of the female singers sound extremely muffled. Your example above sounds like each channel has had some EQ work on it. Sounds so good!
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Robby! A couple of thoughts for you: - Make sure your system is tuned well. If all the vocals sound good in the house but bad in the ears, this may indicate that you're having to do some extreme EQs to compensate for the house that is therefore causing the in-ears to sound bad. You'll see in some of my videos that I suggest playing a professional track that you strive to sound like with zero processing on that track. From there, EQ and level your outputs so that track sounds good in the house. In theory, if you've done this well and your band mix sounds like that recording, the EQs used to achieve that sound will translate better to all your mixes. - Some channels I set to In/LC so the musicians hear exactly what they're sending out without the mixer's processing going to the ears. I usually do this on: bass, electric guitars, sometimes acoustic guitars, keys, and tracks. - Because I have tuned my room, I go pre-fade on channels with live mics such as drums, vocals, and sometimes acoustic guitars. - Finally, I send non-band channels postfade to the ears: video feeds, pastor's mic(s), etc. - Another option is to get a separate monitor mixer like an X32Rack so that you can process the ears independently of the house. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions :) -Chad

@dinospd 5 жыл бұрын
My 2 cents... You may be overcompensating the room acoustics in the channels instead of doing it in the mains. Things can sound pretty different depending on how complex is your room. I don't own nor operate a X32, but I believe you can use some buses to do a separate processing and then send it to the IEMs. This way, you won't need a mixer dedicated to monitoring.

Chad. I just made my in ears stereo instead of mono. I have reverb on my board set up on a bus with an effects return on my main faders. How do I get reverb on just the vocals on my in ear mix?
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 7 жыл бұрын
If you are sending multiple channels to that reverb, you can't really specify what channels come back to your in-ear mix. This is part of the reason why I set up a separate band reverb and vocal reverb ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5qZaJ-Dnbx5jqs ) If you want a reverb specific to ONLY your voice, you're going to need to set up an FX mix with only your voice going to it. It's a little bit wasteful but it would work. -Chad

We have P16's and a few wedge monitor mixes going to BVG vox or specials. I just ordered the sennheiser ew 300 g3 wireless IEM pack for our worship pastor. I was wondering how you send your mix to the IEMs. Mixbus, or matrix? anything help would be great.
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 7 жыл бұрын
Mix Bus. You generally only use Matrices for your different speaker sets such as mains, subs, balcony, other rooms, etc. where you taking your main LR mix and maybe applying a crossover, eq, or delay. Some worship leaders prefer to have a P16 that's run to their wireless transmitter. Especially if they play guitar. It's easier for them to make quick adjustments without having to break out a phone or tablet. Hope this helps! -Chad

Gert Fransen Hey Gert! I generally place them on the outside edges of the stage. If you imagine that the stage is a giant face, the room mics represent the ears of that face. Depending upon where your speakers are located will affect the polar pattern and placement choice for your room mics. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting! -Chad

Great job! I use X32 Mix as well. I play electric. I have been struggling for a year now with my personal mix. Some weeks my ears are great, some weeks its baaaad! 1. Are the different gain songs going to effect my mix considering I get it where I like it using your method at rehearsal? For instance, we do a sound check on 1 of the songs then we go straight to our run-throughs. We do a 4-5 song Worship set at 4 services each weekend and sometimes one song is great and then comes the next song and its bad. Will your -5 starting point procedure stay consistent throughout hard driving songs and mello quiet songs as well? 2. Where is the MASTER volume on this app. I use an iPad app. on stage. Thanks man...Bruce
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Bruce, thanks for watching and commenting. This method isn't 100% bullet proof as it does depend on some consistency from your band when it comes to dynamics. It's definitely a good starting point though. You're correct, with many bands, if they do not soundcheck at full volume, your entire balance will fly out the window when nerves come in to play and the band gets excited and start digging in harder during the actual set. A few tips that will help. - Encourage everyone to soundcheck at full volume so there are less surprises. - If necessary, use compression to even out dynamics of the band. (Personally, I prefer not to have a lot of compression happening in the ears as it doesn't allow the musician to truly hear what they are sending out of their instrument but sometimes it's necessary for certain instruments and often for vocalists. - Make sure to confirm with your soundtech(s) that they are adjusting gain during the actual service. If they are because they have to, that means that, again, during soundcheck, everyone needs to play at full volume. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions :) As far as master volume goes, which app are you using? The ears app (like in the video) or the mixing app that controls everything? There is a master volume on both, however, I generally suggest you keep the master volume at 0.0 and adjust your overall volume at your pack. I make exceptions to this rule when you don't have a pack with a volume control - like when using a headphone amp that isn't near you. If you find you need to boost the volume on the app, instead opt to turn up the volume on the headphone amp so that you will be less likely to peak out the output from the mixer or digital snake. -Chad

Bruce LaVerdiere - You just described my experience as well. Most times I get to a a point where I can play without making mistakes - but most of the times the mix is challenging. To your point it varies between songs during the service. Feel like it has the most impact on the dynamics of my playing.

Hey, what about when our mix sounds bad (not referring to volume). For example, I’m a drummer and the drums EQ in the IEM sounds really bad. In other words, the drums don’t sound as good in my in ears as they do in the house speakers. Any advice?
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 5 жыл бұрын
Assuming your you have decent equipment for the in-ears (good headphone amp, good in-ear buds), one thought would be to check the house EQ. If the room isn't tuned well, the FOH engineer may be using extreme EQs to make up for that and those EQs may be adversely affecting what's going to your in-ears. I would check how it sounds when you play a professionally mastered track through the PA with no processing on it. If it sounds weird, that may be the problem. If that's the case, this video may be worth checking out - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqunlHuLiL51laM Let me know if you have any more questions :) -Chad

In the example, we're using the monitor app but it'll work for anything monitor-wise. Just start with your main instrument(s) about 3/4 volume and build around that. That way you have room to go up as you need.

If they have in-ears, trying to make one mix for everyone can be very difficult as each will need to hear themselves more than the rest to maintain pitch. If you can give them individual mixes, it would be in everyone's best interest. -Chad

@@AWTechTuesday Thanks for replying! So to finish this out, if I set up the 2 busses, say 1 and 2, to be linked then I can pan things between them. How do I need to then get that stereo signal out to an IEM pack? Assuming our transmitter/receiver is stereo, would I need to do something like a "Y" out of Sub 1/2 into a TRS that plugs into the transmitter?
