I wired it as noted in the video. It worked for months. For some reason, all the sudden the chime stopped working. The camera still worked fine and I got notifications on my phone. I ordered a new Nest doorbell camera. Wired it exactly the same. Chime didn't work. Several weeks of frustration ensued and one out of 30 rings the chime, somehow would sound. I installed a dedicated transformer to the Nest Hello and that didn't help. (I had previously been using one of the 2 transformers in the Nutone main control box.) Finally, I checked the comments on here and found one that reminded the reader to "TURN ON" the CHIME ON/OFF selector on the Nest App. Problem solved and a beer was enjoyed. I suspect that either the app was updated and defaulted to "OFF" or I failed to notice the setting when I installed the new doorbell camera. Great video! I never would have been able to pull this off without your help.

Hi topco: Well Done! The settings in the app trip-up lots of people, it would be more helpful if the companies who make the Cameras provided decent documentaion instead of cartoony drawnings about what to do (just my take on it) - Chris

Thank you Chris for the explanation. I bought the parts and made my own board. I powered the Nest Hello by running power using the speaker wires since I was removing the outdoor station. Camera works great. I could not get the Nutone chime to operate and after much troubleshooting I was stumped. The Nest chime adapter was not providing any voltage to the relay board. I finally jumpered AC voltage from the transformer directly to the relay board and it triggered the indoor chime! I finally figured out the problem and that’s why I’m posting. TURN ON the “ Indoor chime On/Off” from the nest camera menu! System works perfectly. I connected relay board directly to the chime module and all parts are in the Nutone unit in the house. I could have installed this with just 2 wires since I don’t need the old doorbell button with the relay hooked up directly to the chime module. Thanks again!!!

Thanks for this! I bought a Nest Hello not thinking about how our intercom system is different from a "normal" doorbell. I actually have an IST intercom, but the basics were the same. I was also able to find an inexpensive and small 12V AC relay which works great. The tough part was getting the wires run to where I needed them, but after that, everything went together easy. Thanks again!

I should clarify that I removed the speaker and replaced the existing intercom panel with a plate made to mount the Nest Hello on. I tucked the original circuit board, now tied via relay to the Hello, behind the plate.

Chris, this video was simply outstanding and so much help with a project I'm contemplating. From looking at some of your other videos I think what I have is a base like your video on the K44 long tube Majestic from 1947 except the base is inside a much fancier unit than the Majestic. It's a wood cabinet much like a mantle clock, including the clock. The clock face and it's glass cover are part of a door that opens to allow access to the chime base. Where your majestic video showed a lightbulb illuminating the Majestic cover from inside, my unit has the same connector but instead of a light bulb that's where the clock motor plugs in. I believe my grandfather installed this in the late 40's as it was already "old" when I first encountered it as a child in the 60's. After my grandparents passed I removed it and it's transformer to install in a house we were building, now 20 years ago. It reminds me of my grandparents every time someone comes to the door. The clock still works too. The transformer is the original. And although it says 20 Volt 20VA on it, when I test it with a multi-meter the transformer is putting out 28 Volts. So I now want to install a modern Ubiquity G4 Doorbell Pro with camera. (Like the NEST doorbells and others.) It includes a power device for activating an external doorbell very much like the one NEST provides that you have in your video above. The specs on the doorbell camera indicate it can use 16-24VAC. I've read people who've had the cameras fail after awhile when powered by 24VAC doorbell transformers where the actual voltage was more like 28VAC. So I don't want to power the new doorbell camera with the 70 year old NuTone transformer putting out 28VAC. And after 70 years I don't want to use a different transformer on the 8 chime doorbell. I almost thought I was out of luck until coming across this video. Using a relay I can get a new 16VAC transformer and let it handle the doorbell camera it's meant to handle and still let the the NuTone transformer handle the 8 chime as it has for the last 70 years. It's brilliant! The best of old and new working together!

Hi mopac001: Transformer Voltage Ratings are specified with the Transformer under it's maximum rated load - a free-running Transformer will typically have a higher voltage measurement. Also, line voltage today is higher than it was decades ago, the higher the line voltage - the higher the Transformer voltage. I am not familiar with the Ubiquity Camera you mention - for it to activate the Chime correctly, it will need to have an adjustment in its app for what Nest calls the "duration time" . This set the amount of time that the relay will stay energized. Your Clock Chime needs a 3-4 second duration time to allow it to start and run through the sequence. Chris
@mopac001
@mopac001 2 жыл бұрын
@@northsideservicecompany3567 Chris - I'll ask on their support page about a duration setting. I do know there is a setting on whether it's a mechanical or digital chime attached to it. And it does list some Broan-NuTone mechanical chimes that are compatible - LA126WH, LA11WH and LA39WH. The only other Broan-NuTone listed is LA600WH which is a digital chime. I'm guessing behind the scenes the setting for mechanical or digital will have to do with how long the relay stays energized. Hopefully someone on their support page can tell me how long that duration is.

@@jimpluss2009 What you need to do is measure the voltage that's coming out of the module that is connected to the relay ( with the relay disconnected) If the voltage is correct (probably between 16 - 24 volts AC) the relay should energize. If it does not - check to make sure the voltage of the relay coil is correct for the available voltage. If all of that is correct - it could be that there isn't enough current (power) available from the module to energize the coil - in this case you may need a different relay - Chris

I do have a question: The Ring Pro has a Pro Power Kit that ensures that the Ring Video Doorbell Pro gets the power it needs. I assuming this is similar to the Nest Power module correct? Awesome video with great detailed instructions! Thanks for that! I was curious about something though. Rather than install a video doorbell, would it be possible to attach dc voltage monitor of sorts to the chime module and feed the readings to a smart home software, like home assistant for doorbell notifications? Im kinda cheap and I do value a bit of video privacy, plus I like doing things on my own. Cheers and thanks for the awesome resources!

Hi Indianboy04: I suppose it would be possible - however it would be a completely custom setup. Probably more trouble than it would be more trouble than it's worth. I believe there are a few door cameras that tie into the owners network (either wi-fi or Ethernet) directly and bypass any connection to the "internet". I think this would give you a fair amount of privacy - Chris

Thanks for taking the time to explain things to us! I've owned the Nest Hello (wired) for months, but been too daunted to actually take steps to install it. I have the Nutone LA-52 musical chime (which you mention in the video), but it seems to be already hooked up to a Nutone 105-N 15VA 16V transformer in the basement. (It produces a musical chime when the front doorbell is pressed, and a simple two-tone when the back doorbell is pressed.) Does this means I can simply follow the Google instructions straightforwardly (using the provided chime connector but without need for a relay), as the transformer seems to be in the proper range already? Many thanks!

Hi khalid: The installation of a Nest Camera should be done as Nests describes when you have a standard door chime. The NuTone LA52 is wired as any conventional 2-Note Door Chime would be, so I don't think a relay is needed (although I haven't actually done it before). Th eLA52 requires a Diode across the Pushbutton terminals (it allows the song to play fully once the button is released) I'm not sure if this will cause by issues with the Nest Camera - Chris

Hi Chris, Absolutely outstanding!!! Thank you so very much, I learned a lot from you! I do have a question though! I have a mechanical old chime the same one you showed in section one. I successfully connected my Google Hello Doorbell to my old mechanical Chime (of course using the capacitor that came with the Google Hello Doorbell) and worked fine. Now I decided to upgrade the old chime to an electronic MP3 Nutone chime that I bought from Amazon which simply advises to take the old mechanical chime wires F & T and connect them to slots provided on the MP3 chime system AND they provided a diod to put in parallel connection to (as they say) provide continuous power to the MP3 chime system. All these of thr instructions in the manual were for a regular mechanical button type doorbell (the same one you showed in section one). So I connected the wires as the advised (but now I have the Google Hello Doorbell) and nothing worked. My question is: Should I use the capacitor provided with Google Hello Doorbell PLUS the diode provided with the electronic MP3 chime?

Hi Scorpion Ninja: I'm assuming that your have a NuTone Model LA600WH MP3 Chime - The instruction that Nest gave your seem correct - The problem may be with how your installed the Diode. On Page 2 of the LA600 instructions, it shows how the Diode gets installed across the screws on the pushbutton - Which direction the get installed in (where the anode is placed) depends entirely on which way makes it work properly. I suspect that you don't have the Diode - 1. Across the "button terminals" or 2. The Diode is the wrong-way around. You can print out a copy of the LA600 Installation instructions for the NuTone web site. - Also, I believe in the Camera App - you have to set the Chime as either "mechanical" or "electronic" and also you have to set the "duration" time - Chris

Hi maxliv0308: Yes - you would connect the wires from the original push button to the relay - I would recommend that you leave the NuTone Door Speaker in place (put the WiFi door camera next to it) - by removing it, you loose the ability to answer the front door with the Intercom System. There may be times that someone inside the house needs to answer the door - but doesn't have a cell phone with the app for your Video Door Camera - Chris

Thank you for posting this video, it’s really helped me learn a lot. I have a few questions... First, would it be possible to simply disconnect the wires from the chime module and connect them to one of the two transformers in order to power a nest video doorbell at the front door or would that cause the rest of the intercom to not function? Basically, is there enough power from one of the transformers to power both the video doorbell and whatever it’s powering on the 3303 main intercom unit? I know the nutone station outside wouldn’t be functional, but I’m ok with that. Also, another thing I was considering was using the two wires that power the intercom SPEAKER at the front door and attaching those to one of the transformers and then using those to power the nest video doorbell and then wiring up the rest of the nestintercom as laid out in this video to get both the intercom chime and the video doorbell working WITHOUT running new power wires and a new transformer just for the doorbell. Does the chime module have to sense the speaker in order to function? I don’t really have a use for the intercom speaker outside once I have the video doorbell working, but it would be nice to have the nutone chime work as well. Problem is it would be rather costly and really difficult to run a new power wire and transformer. Is this a workable option? Thanks in advance for any advice!

First Chris, thanks so much for this video. I've watched this one now as well as the 2 earlier ones you made on this general topic. Very informative and I know much more now than I did. That said, I think the path described in this comment is the one I'm on as well. I have an M&S MC602 system that was in the house when we bought it 10 years ago. We never use it all, except for the doorbell because the house wasn't built with a traditional doorbell. So I just want to replace the existing door speaker and button with the Nest Hello and then leverage the chime module in the existing M&S system. From what I'm learning, it seems like I should be able to do that, but I'm not 100% sure what additional components I still do / don't need. If I can use the door speaker wires for power (still to be tested and confirmed), I assume then I don't need the new transformer. However, I believe I do still need the relay (per your input to another comment) and the Nest chime connector. I'm going to start down this path and see what happens, but Chris if you have any additional guidance or gotchas that I should keep in mind, I'd appreciate the input. Thanks again for taking the time to put these videos together.

Chris, Great and very helpful video for me (non-electrical). I have the same Nutone intercom as shown in the video and hooked up the Nest Hello using your wiring diagram with some uncertain exceptions. After following the wiring diagram, the camera now work on the Nest app but the Nutone chime does not work. The Nest app indicates "Indoor chime on". I connected the wiring to an existing low voltage transformer in the garage for the central vacuum system. The transformer is 16V AC 30VA. I plan to purchase and connect to a separate 16V 15VA transformer. The other uncertainty is the wiring connection to the URBEST HH52P AC 24V relay. I connected two wiring to one end of the relay to the pushbutton (tossed out the exterior speaker cover plate) and connected two wires to the other end of the relay to the Nest power device. I saw another video where the installer used the same URBEST relay but it appeared the two wires from the pushbutton were each connected to opposite ends of the relay. Before I consider purchasing and rewiring the entire setup with a OhmKat Video Doorbell Power Supply and electronic chime, can you provide any suggestions on what I might be doing incorrectly?

Hi Robert: If you're going to add an additional dedicated Transformer, it should be 16 Volts AC rated at 30 or 40 Watts (VA). I'm unclear on why you're using s 24 volt relay on a "16 volt" system???? There is a reason behind the Relay choice I made for use on our "Relay Boards" - You have to look at the amount of current required to energize the coil in the Relay. Many AC relays are simple to big for this type of application - I choose a small DC Relay because - 1. These are used in many NuTone Intercoms and we already had them in stock - 2. Their small coil requires a small amount of current to energized the coil - placing a smaller demand on the Nest Power Device - 3. Their small physical size makes it easy to install in the original Entry Door Station Rough-in. - Chris

When I read a series of email comments, I saw a few individuals who purchased the URBEST relay so I did the same. You appear to be the only person who noted not needing a 24 volt relay. After reading your recent email and reviewing your video about "Relay Board", I went to your website but could not find how one could purchase your rectifier/relay board. As a side note, I incorrectly wired the URBEST relay, found a wiring diagram, rewired it, which eliminated the buzzing noise on the Nest app but did not produce the Nutone electronic chime. This is very well written up and illustrated. Just one question couldn't you just put the relay behind the master station, you could find the wires for the push button and put them on the relay there. Then attach to the transformer at the intercom then you would just have 2 wires going out to the door bell and wouldn't need to add an extra transformer, I could be wrong and might of missed something in the video. Thanks for posting this very informative video. But why do you still need the original door speaker when you have the wifi camera doorbell, which usually comes with its own speaker? If you replace the original speaker with the Wifi doorbell, seems like no new wires would be needed. For example: - disconnect 2 push-button wires at chime unit - remove the existing door speaker and replace with Wifi door bell connecting to the 2 existing wires - locate the Nest power module and relay next to the chime unit (if there's enough room). - connect the 2 wires removed from chime unit earlier, and reconnect one wire to the Nest power unit, and the other wire to the transformer - connect other side of Nest power unit to one side of relay, and also connect Nest power unit to remaining terminal on transformer (all as shown in your figure) - connect other side of relay to the two terminals on the chime unit using a couple of short wires - instead of using a newly installed dedicated transformer for the Wifi doorbell, I'm wondering whether I can just upgrade the exiting 16V transformer to a higher VA one. I currently have a model 105T transformer, which I think is rated at 15VA or something like that. I was thinking of replacing with a 16V / 30VA. What do you think? Do you think this will work? I'm actually looking at the Amcrest video doorbell ($99 at Amazon, and good reviews from various sources). Spec says it requires 16V-24V AC input, but doesn't mention VA requirements. All spec says is that if doing a new install, a transformer rated at 16V / 30VA would work. What's the power requirement of a typical Nutone unit? I have a Nutone 3003 series intercom system. I'm not sure of the chime unit model number; I can't seem to find a number start with "LM" on the unit. All I see is "ACPC-83 94V-0."

Hi Kelly: You can remove the NuTone Entry Door Station completely and just connect to the wires that activate the Chime Module. The relay I used is a DC Relay - so the rectifier converts the AC voltage from the Power Module to DC to power the relay. I choose the DC relay because the selection of AC relays is much more limited, much more expensive and the AC relays are much much bigger in size (also, it's what I had on hand :) ) - Chris

I bought the smallest one I could find, but the output from the doorbell still doesn’t seem strong enough to close the coil. When I attach the 24v transformer directly to coil, it closes fine. But when I attach it to the doorbell, with the little circle module of course, and press the button on the doorbell the coil just vibrates for a second and then stops. It never closes, and so the relay never switches to activate the chime. According to the manufacturer the relay only needs 17mA at 24v to close. I tried finding and AC relay that has a lower power requirement to close, but can’t find any. Do you know of any AC relays that might work, or do you think I need to use a rectifier and DC relay to make it work?

Great video. I found this video by searching how to connect the nest hello to my parents old M&S electronic c8-8 chime electronic doorbell. I ordered the relay and rectifier you had links too but just a little fuzzy on the hook up of the supplied nest (puck) the newer ones have a white wire and a gray wire on one side of puck and the same on the other side of puck. so at time 26:03 of video, it seems you are showing transformer wire going into one color of one side of puck and coming out of other wire and color of same side of puck going to doorbell. if you could verify or correct me on that it will automatically explain the other side going to rectifier. thank you.

Hi Roger: As shown in the diagram on the White Board - Power from 1 wire of the Transformer flows through the Nest puck and continues on to the Nest Camera. The 2nd pair of wires from the Nest puck are connected to the rectifier leads on the Relay Board. The concept is simple - this is how Nest wants you to make up these connections - if you were using the Nest puck to activate the coil in a standard, 2-note mechanical doorbell. In our example - your are activating the coil in the relay - which closes the contact of the Relay - thus ringing the C8 Chime Module in your M&S System. I always like tricking the Nest to do what I want. . . - Chris

Very nice video. I think you should be able to leverage the NuTone transformer and position all the components at the master station, leveraging the existing two wires going to the nest hello for power only. The nest adapter can connect to the transformer and trigger the relay, but do it at the master station. No separate transformer or wiring needed. What am I missing? I have a 3 story house and there are 3 nutone doorbells hooked to the same transformer. They’re wired to the 24V (20VA) pins of the transformer. Hi Sam: Your installation sounds much more complicated that average since you have 3 doorbells - How these 3 doorbells were wired to have them all ring together is a complicated topic and without you knowing exactly how it was done - you don't enough information to have the Nest work with them - Creating a wiring diagram for just the 3 doorbells would be the first step - then based on what you then know - figure out how to incorporate the Nest into the door bell system - Very few doorbells operate on 24 volts - typically they are 16 volt devices. A single 24 volt 20 Watt (VA) transformer will likely not be powerfuller enough for 3 door bells and the Nest together - Chris

Hello. Nice explanation video BTW. Quick question. Since the NuTone Music Intercom uses a 4 wire system (2 for speaker and 2 for doorbell button) have you considered disconnecting the 2 wires used for the speaker and use them to power the Nest Video Doorbell by connecting the not used speaker cable pair to the 16V AC out of one of the already available Nutone Original System? Obviously the speaker wires will be disconnected from the speaker connection at the Music station and removed from the actual speaker at doorbell. Actually the whole doorbell speaker station will be removed (speaker and button) and be replaced by the new Nest and relay setup. I have an M&S DMC-1 Music Intercom System which appears to be the same setup as the NuTone Music with 10 stations and do not have a lot of space to place the transformer. All the stations and doorbell goes in a home run setup to the central music intercom rough in and there is no space there. So I was thinking about removing the speaker cables to power the Nest if I end up purchasing one of those fancy video doorbells. If not maybe run second pair or wires from the intercom transformer to the new video doorbell. Just need to identify the 2 wires for the 16VAC 37W output of one of the two transformers.

Hi Jose: Many people give up the Door Station communication - so they can reuse those wires to power the Video Door Camera. Your DMC1 uses a single Transformer - Which You Should Not Tap Into - to power the Camera. You also Should Not try to find power on the DMC1 for the Camera. Doing either of these will likely result in either a dead Transformer - a dead DMC Master Station or Both - Chris

Hi omnamahshivaya7007: Your LA174 is wired in a conventical way, as any Chime which requires constant power would be wired. 1-Pair of wires from the Transformer supply constant power directly to the Chime. The 2nd pair of wires come from the Pushbutton, which activates the Chime when the button is pressed. There are no "power wires" outside at the Pushbutton - The wires that are connected to the Pushbutton are the "Trigger" wires, which tell the Microprocessor in the Chime to activate. Your Camera must be installed exactly as I show in our Video(s) - which includes adding a 2nd Transformer to power the Camera - running wires for the new Transformer to the Camera - including whichever "power device" comes with the camera - adding a Relay between the "Camera System" and the LA174 for activation - Chris

Hi jack: If you're installing the WIFI Camera in place of the original Entry Door Station, you will be giving up the Intercom Communication to the Door Station becuase the Door Speaker Cone will have been removed. This means that to 2-wires that connected the Door Speaker Cone to the Master Station are no longer being used and they can be "reused" for a different purpose - like becomming power wires to power the WIFI Camera Specifically what needs to be done will depend on which Brand and Model of Intercom you have - however here are the basic steps ~ more-or-less ~ 1 Locate the "Door Speaker" wires behind the Intercom Master Station 2 Disconnect those wires from the Intercom System 3 Add a new dedicated Transformer that will be used to power the WIFI Camera 4 Connect the previouly used "Door Speaker" wires to the new Transformer How you deal with the Transformer that will power the WIFI Camera depends entirely on what Brand and Model of Intercom you have - some are easy - some are difficult and some are impossible - I cannot address all of the possibilities in a KZbin responce Chris

Hi Chris: It's well explained about different options to connect with Nest Hello, At time slot 29:40 there is "Ding Dong" sound as you pressed Nest Hello Door Bell, is it built-in sound of Nest Hello Door Bell? Or there is some other bell connected with it? as you have already switched off Nuton Intercom. Please explain I couldn't get it. Best Regards

@@northsideservicecompany3567 Thank you Mr. Chris for quick response, I thought the "Ding-Dong" sound is coming from your mobile phone, but as you said it is from the Nest Hello doorbell itself which only notify the person who has pushed the Nest Hello's button outside the house.

Hi Chris, I currently have a nutone IM 4406 intercoms system where the front door bell/speaker does not work. I was looking to possibly replace the whole front doorbell/speaker with a nest hello and was wondering if this was possible? The intercom system is currently hooked wired using standard 24awg cat5 wires, I was hoping I could possibly use 1 pair of the cat5 wires to connect to the intercom transformers, while using another pair to make the connection back to the chime module using a relay (if anything just powering the unit would be fine as the doorbell/speaker has not worked since we bought the home). Appreciate the help!

This would definitely work, but I have no way of installing separate transformers without digging holes in walls. I just have a musical chime - no intercom. It's the NuTone LA600WH which is actually on the Ring supported list, but the chime power module doesn't supply power long enough - it only plays the first few seconds of the song. I need it to work for 15 seconds so it plays the whole song. Can I replace the chime power module that came with the video doorbell with something that will supply power for a bit longer? Even if I have to add batteries to it?

Hi Mad Martian: I have no first hand experience with a Ring and a NuTone LA600WH - Since the LA600WH is on Ring's compatibility list - you should contact Ring for a solution to the problem you're having - Chris

@@northsideservicecompany3567 The issue is the dongle - regardless of company - is only providing power long enough for a short chime. I need to either replace or hack the dongle to provide power longer. No manufacturer will tell me how to do that.

I wanted to replace my old ms intercom, am fm radio, intercom and doorbell system with a security system and video doorbell. But it looks like you may fix old systems. Our ms system cracked if I play music thru the house. I watched your nest video doorbell install with an old nut one system. Where is your company located if I ship my master ms system. Lastly, originally it was connected to fire, alsrm….but previous owner forgot system codes. Tried years ago to google administrator bypass codes to no avail. Erika

I purchased the bridge rectifier and relay from your links. I also installed a 16V30VA transformer. I connected everything and here's what I found - I'm hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction. The NuTone chime module rings every time I push the doorbell button, but only works about 30% of the time when I push the Ring button. I looked for loose connections, but didn't find any cold solder joints or other loose connections. The face that it works some of the time (seemingly randomly) is driving me crazy. Any thoughts toward why this setup would work intermittently?

Hi intrepi11: It sounds like you're installing a "Ring brand" Camera - You can double check that their "power device" is installed correctly - ie. the correct wires spliced into 1 of the power wires to the Camera - and the other wires connected to the Relay Coil. - Chris

@@northsideservicecompany3567 Thank you so much for replying so quickly! I have checked the connections, and they seem correct. I just called up and ordered the pre-made board. I purchased the rectifier/relay board, but it hasn't made a difference - my NuTone chime rings only intermittently. I've tried wiring the power module in standard mode and in passthru mode, but the only way it ever works is in standard mode (albeit intermittently). The only other thing I can think of is to replace the 16V-30VA transformer with a 24V-40VA transformer. When my indoor chime does work, I can hear the relay. When it does not work, I don't hear the relay. For some reason, it doesn't always trip the relay.
