I just installed a Ring Pro with a Nutone IM3003. This is fairly straight forward. I used a 24vac transformer I kept from and old furnace when I had a new one installed. Then I bought a 24vac relay for $8 from grainger, I took the 2 wires from the newtone that used to go to the door bell and connected them to the Normal Open NO relay contacts. Then I connected the wires from the old button and connected them to the Ring Pro. The other end of these wires from the button one went to the Transformer 24v side the other to one side of the relay coil. The other side of the relay coil went to the other 24v Transformer wire. The Ring pro includes a small white square with 2 wires coming out of it to put across a chime. Put this across the coil of the relay. In the Ring App press the gear to get to Device Settings select Doorbell Kit Settings . Set doorbell type to Mechanical.

Presumably, replacing the outdoor intercom unit with a ring means disconnecting and or removing the wiring from the intercom base station at the base station so that the wiring is just home run to where you can connect them to 16vac or 24vac power source so the question is whether or not the gauge and insulation of the speaker and microphone wires to the outdoor station or to the doorbell is sufficient to carry low wattage 16vac or 24vac and whether or not it would meet code not whether or not the intercom board would provide the needed power. Later intercoms are wired with cat-5 cables and there is a protocol called POE that allows power to be transmitted through such cables but I don't think any of these WiFi cameras offer ports to use POE however this does mean the cat-5 cables are at least allowed to carry POE power by code. Basically only the wires would be used, the intercom would be disconnected and maybe even removed so it's just a matter of whether or not the wires are the appropriate quality and whether or not it's truly a home run wiring.

Hi John: POE (power over Ethernet) has nothing to do with your project and many modern Intercom System use CAT5 cable because it commonly available and inexpensive. I must say, this video was very informative and perhaps went more in depth than many can easily comprehend. Those with NuTone intercom systems really need to listen to this, if they have a Ring doorbell. I recently had a Ring Pro video doorbell installed, which is their hardwired model. The audio and video features work fine. But the existing chime kit I have, which is a digital style and must have a microprocessor as Northside explains here, sounds absolutely horrible with the Ring Pro and is never consistent in fully executing the soundtrack of the Westminster chime . The interference with buzzing and beeping and broken chime cycle will s horrible. Ring has a long list of compatible chime kits which are both mechanical and digital. I would tend to think there are more problems with digital chime kits when having a Ring Pro doorbell, due to the electronics or involved. I believe this video addresses some of the problems I may be experiencing, but I’m not completely sure. Are there some digital systems which work flawlessly with the Ring Pro or is it best to get a mechanical chime kit, which is compatible with the Ring Pro? After initially installing theRing Pro and having these issues, Ring strongly recommended upgrading my transformer, which already met the 16-24 v requirement. My transformer measured 17 v when tested. But, that transformer was 10 amps and Ring said my issues should go away by getting a 16 v transformer with 20 or 30 amps. So, I installed a new 16v 30 amp Nu Tone C907 transformer and the chime is worse then ever. So, now Ring is suggesting a new chime kit and I would like to know what’s the best way to go; mechanical or digital? Which brand and model should be the most reliable?

Hi R Cole: Since I am not a Ring Video Door Bell expert - I cannot make any recommendations - based on real world experience - about what type of new door chime you should buy. I am fairly sure that Ring suggested that you have a 16 - 24 Volt Transformer that was rated at 30 Watts - Not 30 amps. This in my opinion may be necessary for the Ring (not being an expert - I'm assuming here) but it will likely not have any positive effect of your electronic chime problem. Have you considered getting rid of the chime all together and adding 1 or more of the Ring wireless, plug in extension chime units? - Chris

I just helped someone installing a Ring Pro with a Broan/Nutone C500 music chime, it has four tubes that, when hit by plungers, make sound when the chime is activated. I did a lot of research and study on my own, I wanted to share this information with everyone out there who have a similar system. However, this video is what got me started so I'm grateful for that. I'm not responsible for any damages if you choose to follow the method I described below. I'm simply providing some description of what I did and what worked for me. Your mileage may vary. If you are not family with electrical work, I suggest you either hire someone or ask someone who has experience and knowledge in this kind of work. The problem with my friend's set up is that, when hooked up everything, the chime will keep making sound without anyone pressing the Ring Pro button. Like I said, I did a lot of study and finally figured out why it it doing this. The Ring Power Kit, when installed as instructed, provides power to the Ring Pro button, the C500 itself, being a digital chime, needs 16vac power for it to work too, I believe the Ring power kit simply bridges this 16vac power to the wire that goes to the Ring Pro to power the unit. The problem is that the Ring Power Kit, when installed as instructed, not only provides power to the Ring Pro unit, it ALSO complete the circuit for the Ring Pro button, so to the chime, that button is pressed all the time. That's why it making non-stop sound. If you look at the user manual for C500, there are two methods to connect to this board, first one is using the unit as a digital chime, when the Pro power kit is connected, it complete the connection between terminals 3 (transformer) and 4 (front), which would trigger the chime to work. Since the Pro button needs power (that's provide by installing the Pro power kit), you can't bypass this connection, or else the Pro button won't get power and therefore, won't work. I'm pretty sure if I can provide a separate power source to the Pro button and not use the Pro power kit, this will solve the problem, but that's extra work to find the place to hide the transformer and run the power to the button. The solution is to use the second method described in C500's user's manual. Use the unit as a mechanical chime. In this configuration, you would connect one of the wires from the transformer to terminal 1, and connect the Pro Power Kit as described by Ring, except instead of using terminal 2 or 3, connect the white/blue wire from the Pro power kit to terminal 1. The black/brown still goes to terminal 3. This will provide power to the button. However, the C500 itself still needs power to work, the designer of C500 provided two 9v battery connectors, so find two 9v batteries and connect them to the connectors. Now the chime will work with the Ring pro button. The only other setting you might have to change is in the Ring app, there is a selection of chime type, digital or mechanical, I used digital and it worked. It was set to mechanical initially and it did not work. I believe there are several other similar chimes made by Broan/Nutone that work this way, like C501, C300, just look at the circuit board, if it is similar to the one used by C500, this method will likely work.

Thanks Mike. I tried to use Hampton Bay digital chime, 1001 407 821 with ring pro. Ring says that this digital chime is compatible with ring pro.The chime runs constantly without the button pressed. Called ring customer service, no resolution, works fine with mechanical chime but not digital musical one. Do you know the solution to this issue? How can I use Hampton Bay Digital chime with ring pro? If I install the diode on the ring pro terminals like Hampton Bay recommends, the constant chiming stops but ring pro does not work.

Sam, assuming you are using the Hampton Bay chime in wired connection, not wireless connection, as wireless connected chime will not work with Ring door bell. Try the following: 1) check the voltage output of your transformer, set your multi-meter to VAC (AC volt) mode, it should be at least 16vac, this is the voltage between F(ront) and Trans(former). 2) try to revert the diode that you installed, in theory, the Ring PRO does not need the diode but it's worth a try. 3) did you install the PRO Power Kit that is supplied with your Ring PRO? If not, install it. It sits across F and Trans terminals, 4) In the Ring app, there is a chime type selection, make sure you select digital, not mechanical. Let me know if these helped or not. I bought a 25-ohm 50W load resistor, a few discrete components (2 resistors, 2 caps, 4 rectifier diodes) and a MOSFET photovolatic relay. It basically senses the ring voltage across the load resistors that then turns on the MOSFET relay which triggers the NuTone to ring. See the video in my channel.

The people who installed my Ring doorbell were unaware of the incompatibility with our Nutone NM200 with chime but somehow connected the Ring to power from the outside Nutone intercom box. When originally installed, pressing the Ring doorbell generated both the Ring sound AND the Nutone chime, but power to the doorbell AND the Ring would go off until we manually pressed the house (Nutone) doorbell again (kind of a reset). This worked for two years then failed. The same company returned and hooked up the Ring directly to the original house (mechanical doorbell) and the Ring is currently powered and the mechanical doorbell works also, and the Nutone intercom still works to-from the door. With this setup the Nutone chime doesn't work when the Ring doorbell or the house doorbell are pressed, but I don't care. However, a new problem has cropped up; that is, the Nutone chime randomly turns itself on and when it does, it chimes continuously. By pushing various buttons on the master unit, I've been able to shut it off, but only for a day or so before it returns. Now the question: To prevent this permanently, can I just remove the chime unit from the Nutone, is there another solution to prevent this, or is this a serious problem?

Just use a relay. Hook up the coil side of the relay like you would a standard "ding dong" chime. Then attach the N.O. terminals to the common and your choice of the front, rear or side terminals. I think the transformer in the main intercom box is 16vac. Make sure you match coil voltage. If you can't find a 16vac coil relay just install a SEPARATE 24vac power supply in the main intercom junction and use that to power the ring. 24vac coil relays are common. Ring door bells can handle up to 30VAC. Has to be AC. They don't operate on DC. If they did operate on DC you could just Hook the ring directly to the chime board on the intercom because it outputs DC.

Quite a busy comments section on this video. Thanks for this video and your patience with everyone asking. I have a Broan 63 which I’m guessing works very similarly to the NuTone models shown. It explains why I can measure voltage at the door speaker but pressing the button “shorts” it to ground for sensing purposes. So it wouldn’t provide enough power for other electronics the way it’s currently wired. I don’t plan or using a Ring or other OTS smart doorbell, but I am interested in a DIY low-budget solution such as a camera and Wifi-enabled microcontroller placed in the existing door speaker. If I insist on reusing the doorbell button wires for power but still want to activate the existing chime, I would need to think of some other technique for triggering it, such as a Wifi-enabled relay or transistor by the master system which can simulate the doorbell press that closes the sensing circuit. I’m not sure how other viewers manage to use a relay working unless they have more than 4 wires (2 doorbell, 2 speaker) running to the unit, since there probably has to be a separate wire as a doorbell “signal”.

I have a nutone scoville chime, but the house also has an intercom system built in the late 70's. Ring claims the scoville is compatible but not sure how the intercom fits in. It really isnt functional, and I don't expect it to be integrated into the ring system, just wondering if I can still power my ring gen 2 device and use the scoville chime without the intercom throwing a wrench in the works.

Hi Jonathan: You can disconnect the Pushbutton wires (2) from the Chime and disconnect the Transformer wires from the Chime (2) Splice them together - which will the provide the Transformers voltage to the wires at the pushbutton location. You should check the rating of the Transformer - some Chime Transformers have very low Watt Ratings (VA) - and they may not power your camera correctly - Chris

NSC, I am a renter in a house built in 1975. The intercom is a M&S MU-MC3 3-Note Chime. It has since been converted over to a cheap mechanical chime. I have 4 wires at the doorbell (2 to the speaker and 2 at the push button). I can trace th 2 button wires to the 2 out of the for wires coming from the transformer. How can U test the voltage at the doorbell to confirm the conversion that was done will allow me to hook up the Ring Doorbell without any further modification. It is a very informative video. If I heard him right, he said the Ring Doorbell Pro cannot be powered by your current doorbell. What's weird about mine is that it powers the Ring Doorbell Pro fine and it works. The only issue I have is that the chime do not works on my existing mechanical chime. Chong Lor what he said was it won’t work on a newtone intercom system they operate differently then a electromechanical door bell , A regular doorbell uses 16volts ac.and that is what the ring needs to work and charge battery.

If I understand correctly, the NuTone intercom system will not work with a Ring video doorbell, but I can still replace the entire NuTone intercom sysem with a Ring video doorbell, correct? I figured it out!! Use 2 transformers, 1 for Ring doorbell and 1 for Nutone Chime, by using a cube relay and wiring the common from the transformer for Nutone chime to one side of normally closed contacts and the front connection of the Nutone chime to the otherside of the normally closed contacts...then take from a mechanical chime which acts as a resistor with the Ring power module that comes with the unit and connect to front door connection from the ring unit to where your ring power pack is installed with transformer power on the white wire on your ring power pack and connect to trans connection of mechanical chime, now take another wire from the mechanical chime front door connection and connect to cube relay 16v coil, don't forget your common wire for the coil from the Ring transformer!!! this energizes the coil opening the contacts, when the ring is pressed you'll notice a big voltage drop, down to 8v or so, this allows the coil to disengage briefly and closes the contacts enough to send current to the front connection of the nutone chime and it will ring just fine...if you don't want the mechanical chime just remove the plunger!! works great!!

10/16/2017 UPDATE: It seems that for the Ring Pro to power up correctly, you really need to have 24 Volts AC at 40 VA (watts) running to the Ring Pro. The wire gauge should be at least 18 gauge between the 24 volt transformer and the Ring Pro. If this is truly the requirement to have the Ring Pro work - the idea of bypassing the NuTone Chime Module and reusing the chime wires - connected to the NuTone Intercom Transformer and then to the Ring Pro simply WON"T WORK In these cases you have 2 choices: 1-> Buy a plug-in 24 volt 40VA transformer and run new 18 gauge wire between the transformer and the Ring Pro - or- 2-> Buy a standard Ring Door Bell and use the built-in battery to power the Ring Finally, when you calculate the power from a 24 volt 40 VA transformer you have nearly 1.75 amps of power available. If a product like the Ring Pro requires that much power to operate correctly, it's a power hog. I think Ring needs to look at redesigning it to require less power, especially since their target customer is someone who wants to replace a standard tract-home mechanical door bell. - Chris

Hi Tim: If your IM3303 has a built-in Chime Module, the voltage you may see at the Pushbutton is not a power source for anything, including a WIFI Camera. It is the voltage that the microprocessor on the Chime Module supplies as part of the "triggering" circuit. - Chris

No! There is something called AC relay that costs less than $10 on Amazon that you can add to it with the Ring Power Pro V2 to make it work. I got it (Nutone IM-3303) to work perfectly, using a 24V AC relay. If interested, ask and I will post a schematic diagram on how it's done. That is my story, and I'm sticking to it!

SkyBell will work with Nu-Tone Mod IM3303. Simply wire a $5.29 relay, SPDT, (you only need one set of contacts, normally open) available from Fry's, part #R14-11A10-12. Follow the directions from SkyBell for wiring and wire the relay parallel, not in series across the original doorbell contacts or sloenoid coils. Then wire the relay contacts to the Nu-tone intercom door bell contacts. It would have been too much trouble for me to run the contact wires to the intercom and I didn't want the old door bell to chime so I removed the old door bell solenoid coils from the door bell, removed the plungers and placed the relay and solenoid inside the wall with the Nu-Tone. I left the old door bell button attached to the intercom so that either the SkyBell or the door bell button wile cause Nu-tone to chime. I did wrap the coils and relay with electricians tape to prevent shorting out anything inside the Nu-tone case. Good luck. This should work with similar circuits and intercoms and perhaps Ring. I am not responsible for damage that might be caused by trying this fix.

Dale: No, No, No, No: You (and everyone else, who thinks they have this figured out) is missing the point of the Video. If you have a NuTone Intercom and that Intercom has a built-in electronic Chime Module (or has a separate NuTone Electronic Musical Chime) You Can Not simply connect any type of WiFi Video Door Bell to the wires that run from the Chime Module to the outdoor Push Button and expect those wires to Power the Video Door Bell AND activate the Chime Module or Electronic Chime.- Period - It will not work. . .. I'm not sure what type of installation you have, but is sounds convoluted to me. You mention coils and plungers (which are mechanical chime parts) which you removed, but then you mention having the Skybell connected to the IM3303 to activate it (does it have a Chime Module? - You apparently have much more wiring to work with than the standard amount. I'm fairly sure that you are powering the Skybell on it's own wiring - not the wiring that run between the IM3303 and the Push Button - So you work-around is entirely different that what the Video addresses- Chris

I have the old nutone mechanical doorbell like the one you showed on the board connected to 16V 20VA transformer, model is Edwards 592 put by previous owner (it has 8V, 16V and 24V terminals). I am planning to replace it with the same Edwards model but with 30VA since ring doorbell pro requires at least 30VA (they’re really bad about advertising the VA required!). The plan now is to connect probably 16V terminals and I am not sure if 24V is too much for the old existing nutone bell. Can I go ahead either with 16V or 24V since ring provides a power bypass kit or safer to stick to 16V 30VA please? If this does not work, the only other thing I can do is hook up the wireless chime that works with doorbell pro but I think I may have to still hook up the power bypass inside the nutone chime. Please confirm?

Hi hdbagger4266: I'll try to answer all of your questions - You should follow the Ring Pro instructions as to how to connect the Ring along with your Trine (mechanical ) door bell, I'm not sure how Ring handles a "rear" door button. How you install the ring depends on if you plan on keeping the Trine door bell - if you remove the Trine, you can simply reuse the wires to send voltage to the Ring You should measure the voltage to the Trine at the Transformer - Door Bell Transformers are typically AC Voltage - Transformers have 2 important ratings, Volts and Watts (VA) - as I understand it, Ring requires the correct Voltage along with enough Watts - Your Trine Transformer maybe to small (wrong volts and not enough watts) in this case you will need to replace the transformer - Chris

@@hdbagger4266 Transformers Volts and Watts - both are important - Think of Watts as the amount of available power - as if it were in a bowl. If there's to little power in the bowl -- the Ring will drain the bowl and it will be starved for power - You need a big enough bowl (more watts) to supply all of the power the Ring needs, plus some left over so the bowl doesn't go dry. - More than enough watts is always better - Chris

I am able to use my Ring Video by simply connecting the two wires coming from the transformer. So I guess I'm getting enough power. However my Nutone La-55 is not working. Now I know why. Thanks for this video. I am trying to get my Ring 2 (which has the battery) working correctly with my NuTone 3003 chime. When I manually bridge the two red wires from the Intercom button, the Door Chimes keep ringing until they are separated. When I connect these to the Ring, using the Diode, I have the same result. The chime just keeps ringing indefinitely, until I remove the wires from the Ring. When I connect them to the Ring without the Diode, nothing happens. Any idea what I am doing wrong? I understand that the existing wires from the NuTone chime module can not power the Ring, but for some reason, I can't even get the chime working correctly.

I have a 16V 10VA transformer. Just bought a Ring Pro. I debated whether I should buy a 16V 30VA transformer I saw on Amazon and install that, but the when I chatted with Ring's customer support online, they told me that the Ring Pro should work as long as my transformer is between 10VA and 30VA. I am going to give this a shot and if it doesn't work then I'll get the transformer on Amazon. I measured 19V at the doorbell with my multimeter so I believe I have enough voltage at the moment, but I am fairly certain the load of the new Ring Pro will be much higher than my current doorbell. Has anyone had any success with a 16V 10VA transformer. It seems like the guy in the video did, but the light around his doorbell button was flickering a lot before he tested his doorbell and I am guessing that his doorbell may still be having issues.

Northside Service Company The ring doorbell comes with a tiny speaker built inside the unit. The tiny speaker inside is heard probably about 10ft away. Maybe you could somehow attach an amplifier or a loudspeaker to the internal speaker connection and talk to the people about 50-100 feet away.

I'd love to find a way to make it work without losing any features of my Nutone system even if I have to custom make a mount so Nutone's intercom speaker can be heard clearly.

If the Pro Elite is capable of activating a standard mechanical door bell (the type with electromagnetic coils) then it should also be capable of activating the coil of a small relay. The switching contacts of the relay can be connected to the back of the NuTone Entry Door Station's Push Button - so when the relay is activated - its coil is energized - closing the contacts of the relay - which makes a closure at the Push Button - which makes the Chime Module ring - We have a Video that shows this - when using a Ring Pro with the Pro Power Pack - Here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpjTmo15hbiViqM Chris

Hi K: While I admit that I'm not a Tek-Tone expert - All of the Tek-Tone Intercoms I've ever seen are Apartment Intercom Systems. If that's what you're working with - You may have gone way down the wrong path with trying to connect a Ring Camera to the System. Hi write2warriors: Yes, but there are some considerations - You will loose the functionality of the NuTone Chime Module - If the button pair of wires run in the same cable (or parallel with the entry speaker wires) as the Entry Door Speaker, you will likely get some (or a lot) of 60 cycle noise when speaking to the Entry Door Station, from the AC power in the button wire (now being used for the Ring Video Door Bell) - Chris

Losing the functionality of NuTone Chime Module is not an issue. Looking at the 2 transformers behind the master unit, they are only 16V and 30VA. It's probably not enough to power Ring Pro. It requires 16V to 24V, and 40VA. The wire between the master unit and the doorbell button shouldn't be long, but I expect it loses some voltage along the way. I might give it a try and report back.

According to the Ring web site - The Ring Pro requires 16 VAC @ 30 VA (watts) - The voltage drop would be minimal in a wire run on less than 100 feet. Requiring a 30 VA transformer to power their product is somewhat defeating, most common 2-note door bells (their target product for replacement) are powered by 16 VAC 15 VA transformers. Also, if the Ring Pro requires almost 2.0 amps to operate, it seems like a redesign is needed - Chris

Interestingly, I have two 16V @ 30VA transformers for my Nutone 3303. Will definitely try to rewire the doorbell wires to power up the Ring Pro this weekend.

I disconnected the wires from a 16V/30VA transformer. I wired the doorbell wires to it. It works in day time even though the app says voltage is poor. Maybe I need to check to see if it has enough power for night vision too. If everything works, now I just need a big metal plate to cover up the outdoor speaker hole.

The Ring Pro IS compatible with the Nutone. Just use double sided tape and secure the Ring so that the button is right over the Nutone button. It is a kludge but it works 100% of the time.

Are you saying that ALL digital or electronic chime systems have a microprocessor or just digital chimes from NuTone? I’m getting beeping and buzzing on my digital door chime ever since I installed the Ring Pro. I swapped out the 16 volt 10 amp transformer to a 16 volt 30 amp one and I’m still having the same problems. Are you saying Ring Pro video doorbells will only work properly with mechanical chimes? Ring states their units will work with either mechanical or digital chimes as long as they are the ones on their list of compatible chimes...

HI R Cole: What I am saying is that you cannot use the existing wiring from a NuTone Electronic Chime or a NuTone Intercom System with a Chime Module to power another device - like the Ring Door Bell I don't know how other brands of electronic chimes are designed so I can't comment on their compatibility with a product like the Ring. - Chris

I know that NuTone made a video intercom back in the early 90s, I actually found that out when I looked at one of the NuTone catalogs on your site. I do see why you can't integrate one of these in with a NuTone intercom system: because the technology is just too outdated to support a Wi-Fi enabled device, and there's no way to put in a video screen.

Hi Vincent: The original Video Entry Intercom was the VS1000. It was a hardwired systems that could accommodate up to 4 cameras and 3 monitors. It was a black & white system with CRT low resolution in the monitors. It used technology that carried the video signal along with the DC power to each camera on the same RG58 coax. The VS1000 was a closed system and it could not be incorporated into any of the NuTone intercom systems. The common failure point on these systems is the CCD chip in the cameras, with exposure to bright sun light, over time the chip losses its sensitivity and the result is a lack of contrast in the picture on the monitor and then the image fades to gray. Since the chip is no longer made by Toshiba (I've asked them directly - they said no) the cameras are not repairable. Chris

You can connect the ring to a nutone intercom, use a 24v rib relay and have it powered off the load side of the ring doorbell then use the normally open contacts on the relay and connect to the old doorbell wires which will set it off every time the relay is powered... wasn’t that hard or expensive around 40 dollars (the nutone intercom uses 12 volts)

The point of this Video (from 2 years ago) was that you cannot simply connect a WiFi Video Door Camera to the wires that originally were connected to the push button - which is what everyone wants to be able to do. - Chris

You are trying to use obsolete electronics with the latest technology. I don't see a return on investment. There are modern chimes that will replace the old stuff cheaply and quickly. That said, Maybe it could be done, with some added stuff. I suspect that If you connect relay contacts to the doorbell switch contacts on the Nutone chime, and powered a suitable relay coil in series with the Ring, the surge current when the Ring is powering its speaker would close the relay and fool the Nutone chime to work. Again, this is a waste of time and money. Get a modern chime. The Ring Chime gives you a chime and WIFI repeater in one, and installs simply.

People have sentimentality for there Door Chimes and will go to great lengths to keep them working. Also, You will hard pressed to find a "modern" electronic chime that has the sounds quality and features of the Electronic Chimes NuTone made between 1975 and the early 2000's - Chris
