Our Video Titled " Connecting a Nest Hello WiFI Door Camera to a NuTone Intercom System or Electronic Door Chime" may be our most popular Video. That Video was made 3 years ago and the design and Installation of these WIFI Door Cameras has changed. While much of the information in the original is valid and it will important for you to know - This UPDATE VIDEO address the changes in how this type of Installation is done. I STRONGLY SUGGEST that your watch the ORIGINAL VIDEO : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qme8pKqjebOJr6s before - during or after this new Video. For the battery powered newer video doorbells, like Ring doorbell battery plus, I don't think you need a dedicated transformer as it only trickle charge the battery and it has a lower power draw. Also, the power module is not required for gen 3 or newer products (it is only required for say Ring Video doorbell gen 1 and 2). I wonder if you need the 25Ohm wire wound resistance with the relay solenoid. If the custom relay resistance is close to 25Ohm then I guess you don't need any extra resistance.

Hi Mobius: If a constant power source is required to keep the battery charged - then you need a separate Transformer - I don't know anything about a 250-ohm resistor Since you left 2 comments on this Video - I suspect that you are trying to figure out a 'work around" for what I show in the Video - What I show is "tried-and-true" and many hundreds have followed it with suscess (as far as I know) - Chris

@northsideservicecompany3567 Regarding my comment on whether one need a new dedicated transformer, of course having one will work. What I am saying is, for some doorbell model with battery, the wire only trickle charge so the power requirement is low, compared to say Ring video doorbell pro wired where there is no battery. In the former case you can just reuse the transformer of the existing old intercom system and not likely cause any overloading. This save money getting a new separate transformer. In the latter case of some video camera model without battery, the higher power draw make sense to have dedicated transformer. It depends on the doorbell power draw.

Great Video. I removed the 2 wires dedicated for the "Door Speaker" and connected them to one of the 16Vac Transformers inside the Nutone Panel. I connected those 2 wires to the WiFi Camera and Relay "Power" Side as shown in your diagram. The existing wires on the doorbell were connected to the "Switch" side of the Relay. When I install the batteries into the Ring unit, the doorbell constantly chimes.

@@northsideservicecompany3567 Thanks for the reply. I did change the settings and it would send a signal to the Nutone chime. The only issue now, is the relay will not stay latched. @@recyclepvc The Relay is designed for use with a 16 Volt AC Transformer - 16 Volts is the Industry Standard Transformer Voltage for use in Doorbell Systems - Not 24 volts - Since the Camera is responsible for energizing the Relay and how long it stays turned on - there are probably more adjustments in the app for this - Chris

Hi hstarlin47: A NuTone Entry Door Station with a Chime Pushbutton requires 4-wires - 2-wires to the Speaker Cone, for communication and 2-wires to the Pushbutton to activate the Chime - You have 2 extra, unused wires If you're thinking about installing a WIFI Camera, you can use the 2 extra wires to power the Camera, without giving up the communication to the Entry Door Station Speaker Cone Please Note: That since you will sending AC Voltage through the extra wires - and these wires are in the same cable as the Speaker Wires - There will be some amount of 60 cycle, AC hum present when speaking the the Door Station through the Intercom - Chris

@@northsideservicecompany3567 how would I get the power to the two wires. Would I connect them or add them to one of the sources transformers in the nu-tone electrical loops you diagramed? I don’t think they have power presently. Thanks.

Without knowing the details of your Intercom System, I can only give general advise - The Camera needs its own Transformers in most cases - This new Transformer can often be added to the Wall-Housing of the Intercoms Master Station - Once you have the new Transformer installed, you connect the 2 extra wires to it - this will supply power to the Camera at the Entry of your house - Chris@@hstarlin47

I had a Viewer of this Video follow the Installation Instructions I show in this Video with a Lorex Door Camera and one of our Relay Boards - He reported that after getting everything wired together (on the workbench, as a test setup) he couldn't get the Relay to energize. I suggested that he check the "Settings" in the Lorex App. He did, and this is what he found: From Lorex: "For your chime to ring, the chime setting in the Lorex Home app must be set to Electronic Chime or Mechanical Chime, depending on the type of doorbell chime you have. Mechanical chimes make a traditional ding-dong sound when rung while electronic chimes can play a melody or ding-dong when rung. You can modify these settings at any time in Device Settings > Doorbell Chime." He set the Chime Setting to "Mechanical" and now everything works - Thanks to Danny for letting us know Chris

Why do you need a rectifer on your custom relay? The eufy/ring will close the AC circuit when its doorbell button is closed, which will power the passive relay solenoid which in turn closes the DC circuit contact mimicking a Nutone doorbell button press (as you mentioned in the video time [12:00]) . So why is the DC rectifier required?

@@northsideservicecompany3567 Thanks that makes sense. I got myself an AC relay which I will test, but I can see a DC relay with rectifier maybe cheaper. I am not sure my AC relay would work as the trickle charge may trigger the relay without the doorbell being pressed. I will report back.

I manage to get R1BU1C AC relay to work. I connected the AC solenoid side in parallel. The shorting when ring is pressed de-energises the parallelly connected relay and the normally closed pole switch is actuated to the normally open position, closing the normally open SPDT circuit where the cold traditional chime button circuit is wired to.

First and foremost greatly appreciate the level of explanation and just knowledge you put in your videos. I have a little project going on for a friend he has a NuTone 4406 system and throwing in Arlo Doorbells in place of his NuTone Doorbell Speakers. The Arlos recommended input is seen in different places as 16v-24v 10VA Transformer or "be supplied with 16v-24v and atleast 1 amp" the exact distance of the runs in unknown but there are 3 that are pretty even immediate distances from the system located centrally in the home. I am curious if adding single 24v 40VA transformer is likely to power all 3 well enough? Thank you!

Hi Chris, Thank you for putting this content. You are the best! In my home I have Nutone IMA-3303. I have few question 1 Can I use my old transformer ? Its tyco 33224007, 24 VAC 10VA 60Hz. 2. Depending upon model, transformer comes with 2 wires(black and white) or three (White , Black & Green). How should we wire it it, does white goes to the Wifi Camera or Black to the Wifi Camera? (green is Ground but if i need to get new one then how should we wire ground, since Nutone has only 4 wire connections, 2 each for the button & speaker)
@northsideservicecompany3567
@northsideservicecompany3567 Жыл бұрын
Hi MONIL: I am unclear on your comment about the "old transformer" The IMA3303 use 2) 16 Volt Transformers - and not ANY 24 Volt Transformers. The Black (hot) White (neutral) and Green (ground) Wires on any Transformer are the 120 Volt connections to the Primary side of the Transformer. These wires power the Transformer - more modern Transformers use a Green Ground Wire. When connecting these wires to 120 Volt Power, you simply match up the wires - color to color - Black to Black - White to White - Green to Ground These wires have NOTHING to do with the connections to the - Intercom - Door Station - Pushbutton - WIFI Camera or anything else. Those items need to be connected ONLY to the Low-Voltage (16 volt) side on the Transformer - Chris

Hi Chris, thanks for the video! I have a System from a company called Comelit. On the doorbell, there appears to be 3VDC and the current ring will close the circuit when pressed and upon release it opens up the circuit again. This mechanism seems to ring the chimes. I tested this also by connecting the 2 wires directly and then releasing them and it rang the bell. I have a ring doorbell 3 and I tried to connect the two wires to it and with any setting it would just not manage to ring the chimes. What am I doing wrong?

I did a somewhat similar workaround on my home security system, which I didn't want to pay to have monitored by a security company. I had no way to access its dialer, so I wired a relay in series with the siren circuit. The relay, when energized by a siren, activates a Radio Shack phone dialer, which dials my cell phone several times, indicating my alarm has been tripped. My home phone number displays "EMERGENCY" and the ringtone is a claxton sound. There's something wrong with me...😂

Hi Chris, Great info! I have a NuTone 174 with 2 pairs of wires. I pair (Red and white let's name it as pair AA ) producing 18v and the other pair (pair BB )doesn’t produce any. Both pairs’ whites are connected to Yellow, One Red to the ( AA redwire, Power producing one) and the other Red wire to the 1st door on the circuit board. In the garage I have a transformer, if pair BB is connected to the Nutone then I get voltage at the doorbell. (as rated by the garage transformer) . So it looks like I have 2 power sources. I get voltage at the doorbell if and only if pair BB is connected to the Nutone system. My question is, given this, where do I connect the Nest power device and relay ?
@northsideservicecompany3567
@northsideservicecompany3567 Жыл бұрын
Hi omnamahshivaya7007: Your LA174 is wired in a conventical way, as any Chime which requires constant power would be wired. 1-Pair of wires from the Transformer supply constant power directly to the Chime. The 2nd pair of wires come from the Pushbutton, which activates the Chime when the button is pressed. There are no "power wires" outside at the Pushbutton - The wires that are connected to the Pushbutton are the "Trigger" wires, which tell the Microprocessor in the Chime to activate. Your Camera must be installed exactly as I show in our Video(s) - which includes adding a 2nd Transformer to power the Camera - running wires for the new Transformer to the Camera - including whichever "power device" comes with the camera - adding a Relay between the "Camera System" and the LA174 for activation - Chris
