Now I just did some recording and it has NO sound. I started going into the preferences EVERY time I turned the camera on to make sure it said “standard mic”. It did. Just bought an adapter so that I can use an external mic while vlogging on my motorcycle. Wish that I hadn't bothered. I got home and downloaded all of my footage to find that only the first video had audio. Turns out that if you use 'one touch record' with an external mic this is what happens and GoPro have never addressed it with a firmware update! There is a workaround where you can power up first and then press to record, but it's just a out impossible to do with a chin mounted Session 5 and motorcycle gloves. Not good enough or practical enough in what is supposed to be an 'action cam'

I have the Hero 5 black. Just watched my vacation videos. The picture is great, the waterproofing is great, but the sound... OMG! The microphones pick up every sound from the handling. If I touch the case, the microphones pick it, and it's not a quiet sound. I had the GoPro on a floating grip, and every smallest of sound when I grip the handle is transmitted via the frame on to the microphones. So all I can hear is a terrible racket. I wish there was someway to fix this without an external mic, which would make the camera not waterproof. I've searched dozens of videos and blogs, but no-one seems to have come up with any good solution. They have drilled holes in the frame, put hairs on the mics, but ended up making it sound much worse. Some suggested to insulating the grip with thick foam, which might be the only solution. Not very good one, because judging from the video, they still had some handling sounds.

UNREAL - Thank you. I can't believe that I had to change a software setting in order for my mic to work. I simply thought that my adaptor was broken. Since I had to pay an additional 50 bucks, I naturally assumed that the camera would auto-recognize that an external mic was plugged in and work. Instead, it simply recorded no sound - and was a huge source of frustration. What type of real world testing does GoPro do for their products - or do they? Thanks again - your video cleared this up for me.

would a better solution be to just get a microphone that plugs into your phone and sync the audio afterwards. I know this is an extra step in the editing process but to me it would have its advantages of not having to expose your waterproof case, no go pro adapter and no jerry-rigged setup that looks pretty hideous in my opinion and takes away from the practically of having a go pro in the first place. Any thoughts?
