You saved my life! Your video is 5 years old and I just found it and with your help I could now solve my problem. I suddenly had no audio anymore (Hero 7) and even the GoPro support couldn´t help me. I was asking them about the settings and they had no idea! Before, my audio worked just fine without having Protune turned on but now, after watching your video, I turned it on and my audio works again! I don´t know why that is, but I´m happy to have audio back. I came to your channel, because I was going to buy a new (used) GoPro (Hero 8) out of desperation, but now I don´t have to anymore! So grateful! Thanks!

UHHH! This video is a HUGE life saver. I had bought all the needed products to run a external Mic and it did not work until I watched/listened to your instructions. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO!! Yes, I know I used caps, but when a person spends their hard earned money to get their GoPro to work correctly, it's frustrating with zero instructions. Now for a test run snowmobiling and talking.

OMG finally someone that made a great in depth "tutorial" on the settings and quirks of this freaking audio adapter. Thank you so much...I thought I bought a faulty mic but all I had to do was change the setting to Standard Mic +. Thank you, I'll be subscribing to your channel. You were way more helpful than actual GoPro "support"

Thank you, thank you, thank you, I have gotten so frustrated with my GoPro that I have stopped using it because of the inability to get the mic to work. All because of 1 little ring on the plug. I find it incredulous that GoPro do not have this knowledge and are not willing to share it if they do. Aww, what a shame! Let’s go through this again, maybe we can make it work: make sure you don’t use Quick Capture. Switch on the camera first, then plug in the adapter. See if the menu under I/O appears and choose Standard Mic. Plug in your Mic and see if it works. If it doesn’t, change the 3.5mm connector (like if you had TRS, try TRRS or vice versa - some adapters seem to accept TRS like mine, others seem to accept TRRS). If that doesn’t work, try the whole sequence again, but use Powered Mic in the GoPro menu. Maybe your Polodou is an active mic and it needs phantom power. Before you go ahead, try your mic with a different device (like your phone) and make sure it works. That’s how I would proceed. Hope you get it to work!

You are so amazing for making this! I’ve had my GoPro Hero 7 for a while now and never understood why I couldn’t get the audio to work with my microphone. I have the GoPro adapter that you have but I bought it a while back when I had my hero five session. I’m not sure if it’s outdated or if it’s that I don’t have the correct microphone but I’ve already ordered the same microphone as you to see if that’ll remedy my issue if not I’ll just re-order the microphone adapter and hopefully my problem will be solved! I’ll try my best to keep everyone updated thanks

Thank you! I'm new at all this and just bought this for 7 Black and am clueless. Although this video is over a year old they still do not provide any instructions. This whole GoPro world is hard to learn from scratch. Went out testing all the Protune settings on my motorcycle bar and helmet-mounted and nothing. You couldn't hear me say a thing over the wind noise over 20mph. Hours of poking around the internet found out I needed to spend more money that I don't have to buy a mic for inside the helmet and this Adapter. I was like you, opened the box with a blank stare thinking, OK, so now what do I do? I only knew about the Protune settings. Thank you for telling me about the Input/Output settings. Much appreciated.

Hello The WP Guru. I have a question. Do you know if the mic adapter only records in mono, or stereo as well? I have a GoPro hero 7 black with the mic adapter and for some reason I can only get it to record with the left channel only and I'm wondering if I'm having an audio problem somewhere. I have a purple panda lapel mic with the TRRS to TRS cable adapter but I still only get left channel recording or mono. If you could please help that would be awesome and thanks in advance. 🙂
@WPguru
@WPguru 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Humvee Guy, I can confirm that the adapter can record stereo sources. I've tried this with a line in and it sure does two different channels of audio. With my mono mic, it does record both tracks. If you only get a single one, try taking the TRRS to TRS adapter out and see what happens. If that doesn't work, try using a different mic, or another audio source to isolate the issue. Good luck!

@@WPguru OK. Thanks. I'm guessing I bought a cheap TRRS to TRS cable cause when I bought my purple panda kit I got the wrong one that came with a TRRS to USB type C instead of the TRRS to TRS cable. OH well. Live and learn I guess lol. I just ordered another PP kit with the right cable so I'll see if that fixes things. Thanks for confirming for me that it does record in stereo. Stay safe and have a nice day/night. 🙂

I just bought the GoPro Audio Adapter for my GoPro Hero 7 Black, and my experience is different from yours. In the video, you said that yours won't work with a TRRS connector. However, mine works just fine with TRRS. I used a Boya BY-M1 lavalier microphone with a TRRS connector, and it works perfectly. I don't know if the difference lies with the different microphones or with the Hero 7 Black and your older GoPro. But, as I said, mine works just fine with the TRRS connector on the Boya BY-M1 microphone. Interestingly, I also tested my audio adapter with the Boya BY-MM1 microphone. That microphone comes with two cables - a TRS and a TRRS. And with that microphone, the results mirror yours. It will work with the TRS cable, but it won't work with the TRRS cable.

I've just checked again to make sure, mine definitely needs the TRRS to TRS thingy. You're saying yours works straight with a TRRS connector? That's confusing! Perhaps GoPro made a change?

Good Job. I figured it out myself after much testing using my Saramonic Blink 500 microphone receiver. Wish I saw your video before. Would of saved a lot of time. Thankfully Ulanzi has some good cheap cases that will hold the adaptor. Line In is usually from a soundboard, or other device such as other sound equipment. It usually means a 1v Peak to Peak signal. No amplification provided to the signal as compared to any of the microphone settings.

Question?: I have a Hero 7 Black and in the process of building my setup. I ordered a aluminum cage, will be ordering the audio adaptor, microphone soon. My question is I see others setup but nobody has tried using a type-c cable extension to give more options of mounting the audio adaptor out the way. I was wondering if it would be possible to use a type-c extension cable or even a angled type-c connector connected into the GoPro then have the audio adaptor connection to the extension/angled connector? Will the GoPro recognize the audio adaptor still? If so this is how I would like to setup mine.
@WPguru
@WPguru 6 жыл бұрын
Good question, Mark. I would assume so, if the USB-C extension is fully wired, but I don't have such a cable so can't say for sure. I know that regular USB (A-type) extensions sometimes leave out the data pubs, so charging works fine but some data transfers do not. If you find out, please let me know. Angled or not shouldn't matter, fully wired probably will.

@@WPguru speaking with GoPro on Twitter and they seem to say that this could work but they have not tested it themselves. I would imagine this would work. I was planning on buying the GoPro Hero Black 5 for a motorcycle trip but after reviewing this, I might as well not get it. With an adapter the size of a second helmet, the trip is going to be highly uncomfortable. It's not really a ''compact'' solution anymore as I can't put a GoPro on the helmet and a sturdy adaptor inside my helmet while also having an intercom on it. I'll have no place to fit my head! This review was quite helpful to make sure that I don't spend money where it's not needed. Thanks for that!
@WPguru
@WPguru 5 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome, I'm glad it was helpful. I still like the GoPro 5, and before I bought this adapter, I used my iPhone to record a separate audio track with an external mic. This was inconvenient in post production, but a slightly handier solution than using the adapter. Right now, a cable is connecting me and the camera - which means if I have to disembark the bike, I'll have to watch for that cable. With those two not connected, I felt as if the whole camera setup wasn't even there: I could get on and off the bike, walk around it, move it, without having to care about being connected to the camera. Just thought I'd share this experience, because it feels related to your motorbike trip. Aside from GoPro (who I believe do charge a bit too much for their cameras), look into the Yi series. From what I've seen, they're on par with the GoPro at almost half the price. I don't know about their audio connectivity though. Let me know which solution you're getting, I'd be interested.

Many thanks for posting this helpful video on KZbin. Great work for the GoPro users community. Question: My GoPro camera has a case that holds in the GoPro Hero 5. This set up does not allow access to the GoPro Hero 5's mini USB Ports to connect a microphone . How do you connect your GoPro Hero (5,6 or7) to your bike and at the same time plug in the microphone ? Do you have a special Gopro case that allows you to access and open the camera USB's ports? I use the GoPro Hero 5 when I am riding my motorcycle and would like to hook up a microphone.

Hi Osni, I use the regular GoPro frame that comes with the camera when I'm on my bike. To expose the ports and still make the camera fit in the frame, I had to remove the door, but it's easy to pull off. When it's raining I add the door back on and record the audio with a separate device, so that the camera stays dry inside its waterproof design (but I don't do that very often). I'd love to see something like a wireless mic option in the next version of the GoPro, some mechanism that lets us attach wireless mics and/or headphones with integrated mics (like AirPods). As long as it's not raining, you're fine without the door.

Excellent video. Thank you for putting it together. I have a R0DE VideoMicro (which came with a TRRS for the microphone to TRS for cameras). Works fine. I also have a cheap lapel microphone (forgot the brand) which came with TRS connector. It also works fine. But I had to look at a slew of videos on KZbin to figure out what you just put into one video. Thanks again.

Thanks for this...I watched several videos before I bought the case and the adapter. Since I have a Gopro 6 (nonblack) I wasn't sure if it would work....But I took a chance and ordered on Amazon. Luckily I had a standard cable with the two 'bumps' and it records sound with a cheap MOVO mic. Yay...

Hello, great video. I have a couple questions though. Have you noticed the audio out of sync with the video? Currently I am recording with an external audio recorder for my gopro footage on my hero 7. I'm asking because my hero 4 audio usually gets way out of sync. Also, would using the pro tune option to create a separate audio file cause a lot more space on the SD card to be used up? Im assuming having the separate audio file would give the ability to sync up the audio if it were to get out of sync. I use Adobe premiere elements to edit video. Thanks for the info!
@WPguru
@WPguru 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Matoosky, the separate audio file is relatively small, about 50MB per minute of video. It's uncompressed WAV format as far as I can tell, so that's in addition to the video file (that's 300-500MB per minute, depending on resolution and settings). The audio sync is a funny one, I've noticed this as well. I'm not sure why GoPro have such issues keeping this in sync. On my HERO 5, most footage is about 6 frames out (when I record at 60fps, so that's 3 frames in 24/25/30fps, or about 100ms), however sometimes it's spot on, about 1 in 6 recordings or so. Go figure! When I see this during editing, I simply separate the audio and video and shift it accordingly, it's a fixed value (audio is early when compared to the video, so shifting audio to the right will fix it). I don't usually record a separate audio file, iMovie and Premiere Pro will let you separate them, I *think* Premiers Elements can do this using the Expert Timeline. Hope this helps!

The mysterious “S” of TRS is sleeve. Tip Ring Sleeve. In sound wiring, the sleeve is always the ground or shield which prevents external electronic interference from external source.

Great video! Does it mean that it's impossible to record with a wireless mic? I use a waterproof housing to record videos in the backcountry so plugging in additional wires won't work... thanks!
@WPguru
@WPguru Ай бұрын
Hi Jess! Sadly yes, if you use a waterproof housing there's no way to record the audio directly to the camera. For those situations I suggest recording the audio separately to something like your iPhone, then match up the footage in post production. Use a sync point for both (movie pros use a clapperboard, but a simple clap with your hands will work so you can identify it later). If the audio from the camera is somewhat usable, you can also use that to sync up the footage automatically if your editor supports it (Premiere does, but it's often overkill to use that function). Hope this helps!

I bought a used gopro hero4 silver for my son and my band practice and man it sounded so good and rich with the on board mic but unfortunately it went on the fritz 😭, i bought a used 7 silver and that was terrible for music because the 3 mics were fighting with each other and it was super muffled. I'm back to my hero 3 white which isn't too bad on the sound but it isn't nearly as good as that 4 silver. I'm looking into an external mic for it now.

Ah the HERO 3 was a nice camera. I believe a regular cheap USB to 3.5mm adapter will work on it, together with the mic that I've linked in the description. I think it even comes with the adapter you need ;-) Good luck!

Thank you for the amazing video! Is it possible to replace this box with a simple USB C to 3.5 adapter? Or do I have to buy the GoPro Adapter? Also, does that mean I can use any mic? Do you have any experience connecting it to a zoom h1?
@WPguru
@WPguru 2 жыл бұрын
You'll have to buy the original GoPro adapter, it appears to contain some proprietary magic and the audio encoding logic. The cheaper generic adapters won't trigger the menu to enable the audio input. Any mic will work, as long as it has a 3.5mm TRS output. Sadly I don't have any experience with the H1, it's more like a recorder itself so I'm not sure if you can loop the mic through.

Can you plug in a wireless adaptor to the microphone adaptor? I'm just about to purchase the external microphone adaptor for my hero 5 black and I already own a wireless microphone set. The wireless kit has the 3.5 jack sockets. I know it will turn the gopro to quite a bulky set up but I really do want to use my wireless set on the adaptor you are reviewing. Many thanks.

I tested the adapter and rode separately, they work just fine.
@WPguru
@WPguru 4 жыл бұрын
Oh that's interesting. When you attach the adapter without the Rode mic, the menu comes up and you can make selections? And when you plugin the Rode things stop working, is that right? See if a different mic will do the trick, even a cheap one. If that works, it appears the Rode is causing an issue. I've never heard this before, thank you for bringing another GoPro quirk to my attention :-)

I doubt it, but you never know until you try. For smartphones with a USB-C input you may be able to use one of the cheaper generic adaptors (which in turn won’t work on the GoPro cameras).

@WPguru
@WPguru 5 жыл бұрын
Hi John, it sounds like your TRS or GoPro Adapter isn’t connecting the right channels. If it happens with different mics, one thing in the chain has to be the culprit. I’d try another TRS connector, they’re cheap to come by. If that doesn’t fix the problem, your GoPro adapter may have the issue (let’s hope it doesn’t though).
