I've been looking at MPC Lives; as soon as I find one for the right price I'll pull the trigger. This was a great video. I'm looking to do a very similar setup with my novation remote SL and my Virus TI2 desktop. I started out making music with an ASR-10 and an MC-505 and I miss that hands on feeling of putting tracks together (vs clicking around in a DAW). Both have their merits, but I want to bring my gear onstage and play PA sets. Thanks for the excellent demo, you've helped me realize the the MPC Live paired with a multitimbral synth is the ultimate "groove box" set up. I'm really looking forward to working this way.

How can I turn off midi note into the drum channel? I’m using a midi keyboard in to play a bass line live and want to also play the drum pads live.

As far as I know there is no way to turn the midi notes off into the drum channel. The midi keyboard triggers the active track on the MPC, so if your drum track is active it will trigger it. Is your bass line coming from the Blofeld? If so you can connect the midi keyboard midi in to the Blofeld and use the drum pads for the drums. I know Akai is updating firmware all the time so they may change this in a firmware update.

As far as I can tell none of those features are available if the Komplete Kontrol isn't connected to the computer. BUT, the MPC LIVE has a fully featured pad performance mode that has scale and chord functions built into it.

@wireguy123 I actually don't even use the LSB/MSB information, I'll either name the MIDI channel and track whatever the keyboard Combi/Program is, orrr, and I'll just turn that track into an Audio track and save it as such, then mute the keyboard track, and trigger the audio track as a sample and then save the sequences... with audio samples.. which can be chopped up later if I want to... that kind of works out better with the audio tracks/samples...

Hey Matthew, I do have a question, and perhaps you could make a video to answer part of the question. (questions, more like) I have just purchased a Moog Minimoog Voyager XL. It's a beast of a synth, and can generate lots of great sounds, but... It doesn't have any effects built in. So, my question is, can I do this setup here and use the effects of the MPC Live on the sounds that the Voyager is generating? Secondly, I'd really like to know how you wired everything, or how I should wire everything. As far as I know, midi cables don't carry sound data, so I'll have to hook up the midi out of the MPC to the Midi in on the Voyager. No problem, I can do that. Then, do I hook an audio jack from the Voyager to the MPC Live? I also have a Teenage Engineering OP-1 that I can use as a USB midi controller, should the Voyager be unable to be played while being midi controlled by the MPC Live. The key thing I want to know is, can I use the MPC Effects on the Voyager XL, and how would I go about doing that? Thanks a lot for this video, by the way. From my understanding 3 of the pins are used standard across devices. 5 pins can be used for other applications. To be honest I don't know all the details, but I usually buy the din 5 midi cables and haven't had any issues.

For now if you put your audio outputs into your MPC LIVE and monitor the synth on the audio track, you can then use the MPC LIVE effects on that synth. I need some more information. If you are sending midi from you mpc to the blofeld, then, you will not hear the blofeld through your mpc because in this example your audio outputs for both (mpc live and blofeld) are going into a mixer. I am assuming you are going midi keyboard to mpc live to blofeld. In which case the audio is coming out of your blofeld.

According to some sources, the Blofeld has MIDI out via USB. Have you checked if the Live recognises it if plugged in?

Yes, I checked. You can set the blofeld to send Ctrl Out thru its usb hub. The MPC LIVE does recognize the MIDI signal. I am actually working on a video now about it.

hello matthew! i've experienced a issue when i tried to connect my Samsung j5 to my keyboard with MIDI and OTG. ive bought a midi cable from wish.com and the otg from my country. somehow when i connect those two cables together and open apps that can do midi such as perfect piano and walkband the app completely freezes and i cant touch or play anything. do you know why this is happening? i know this is nothing to do with you video but i hope u can help me thanks!

Kalistagod godkalista he's right definitely a learning curve. But for midi hit the midi icon on track slot then look at lower left and make sure it midi and have your audio going into mpc inputs and play! Hope that helps I just figured it out lol

Great! I am glad that works for you. You can customize your MIDI programs further in regards to Q-links and MIDI CC. For example, if you change midi CC values in program 1 for sound 1, CC values should effect any sound in that program. If you have separate programs for sounds, it should keep your CC settings separate. You can get to your MIDI CC Values by selecting which MIDI program you want and going into "program edit".

Is it possible to get this level of control of the blofeld with a midi keyboard that isn't usb in this set up? I.e. just connected with a 5 pin. The set-up I want to build is much like the above - MPC live, Blofeld & Midi Keyboard, but I want to keep the whole set-up computer-free. So nothing connected via usb to a laptop or anything. Is this possible? I know the blofeld only has 1 midi port.

Thanks for the question. Yes, you can plug a 5 pin midi cable from a midi controller to the 5 pin midi inputs of the MPC LIVE and send the midi out of the 5 pin midi outputs of the MPC LIVE into the 5 pin midi input of the blofeld. Both the keys from the midi controller keys and the cc encoders work with no issue. 👍😉🙏🖖

If you want to record multiple devices at the same time, you need an audio interface with the same number of inputs as the number of devices you want to record. Then just use the sync mpc to your daw midi clock. That's how I do it.

I like what you doing, but I need to see a video where you are playing from midi keyboard such as a Roland Fantom for all parts. Not use, but direct from the keyboard. I'm having issues. I believe that I need to connect the midi a different way- midi in to the MPC Live and midi out the Fantom. Hopefully that will allow me to play the Fantom sounds into the MPC Live? Hello. If you want to record the audio into the MPC LIVE you can connect the audio outputs from your Fantom into the LIVE. You can record the sounds onto audio tracks that way.

Matthew Stratton today I was able to put the Fantom in performance mode and get all the midi channels to work. I'm hearing the audio and its recording it into the sequences. Will I still need to connect the audio cables for out put to hear final mix?

Once you have the audio recorded into the MPC audio tracks you shouldn't need to connect the audio cables. The audio should be coming from the MPC at that point.

But, if you mean can you record midi from an external midi controller and record the midi cc into the live, then the answer is yes. If you are using a different synth that sends midi cc then it should be able to record it. Do you want to use the keyboard on the Bass Station? You may be about to connect the MIDI out of the Bass Station and connect it to the MIDI in of the MPC. Then, set the keyboard of the Bass Station to be a controller only (is that an option on the bass station?). After that, set up a MIDI program of the MPC Live. Send a MIDI out of the MPC Live to your Bass Station. You should be able to play your bass station then and record midi notes into the MPC. Full disclosure, I didn't check to see if you can use the keyboard on the bass station as a controller, so it may not work. If it doesn't work you can also use the method I should you in this video and use an external keyboard as I show here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4PFmqawrbyAnJo

Mutes work differently with audio tracks compared to MIDI tracks. If you mute your audio track channel in one sequence then it will be muted in all sequences.

Hello , i am struggling between an octatrack m2 or the mpc live,i allready had once the octatrack and it was rock solid (no crashes,glitches etc..),but i had to sell it of personal economic reasons,now i saw the mpc live and regarding producing hole songs and sampling power its on paper actually smokes the octatrack,but i saw many complaints about stability and relaibility,some questions to somebody who had used the mpc live : -can i make a 2 hour live set without worring about crashes,and sound glitches?(clip launch mode) -Does it get stucked while having multiple parameters automated? -can i sequence several midi mashines at once? (example two friends come over for a jam,and i connect two different midi keyboards to trigger different midi channels,so i can jam with the pads,while the others play melodys on the keyboards)e.g. multitimbrality -can i load samples and make editing while the sequencer is running in clip launch mode,without overcharging the performance relaibility? -can i change clips in realtime without stopping the sequencer? if somebody has experience with mpc live,please help me with my decision,thanks!(ps: I dont care about connecting to computer and wireles midi etc,i only want to use the standalone mode)

Hey Matt, I am having a huge problem that I cannot figure out for the life of me. I am trying to sample a vocal into the MPC One from the Boss RC-505, and when I go to sample the sound, the volume is loud when I have it going into the sampler, and can hear it very loud in my headphones, but after I sample/record it into the MPC One, the volume is barely audible, and I cannot get the volume going into it to be around -6 to -3 db, but even when it is going into it and it is reading about -12db, it is hardly audible once it's recorded. This is driving me nuts, because I want to sample my sounds into the unit, not use the audio tracks? Does midi have to be connected, because I thought that midi just sends information? I have benn trying to figure this out for days, and cannot find out why the volume is so low after I record my sounds? And I have the volume on the back up almost as loud as it goes for the input signal? PLEASE! Someone HELP ME here!...SBN RESONATE

MIDI shouldn't affect the audio signal. If worse comes to worse you can increase the gain of your samples in sample edit, or even normalize them. But if you meter reads -6 it should record at that level. Do you have effects on the inputs in the sampler? If so that may be the problem.

The MPC Live 1 doesn't have CV and neither does the blofield or a lot of synthesizers.

The blofeld only has a MIDI in port. There is no real advantage to sending MIDI out of the blofeld or any synth that doesn't have a keyboard and isn't designed to control external gear. The MPC can control parameters on your synth and you can automate them within the MPC using MIDI out of the MPC into the Synth.

Hey Matthew. Is it possible to record the audio from the waldorf back in the mpc while playing the recorded midi notes? So mpc midi to waldorf and then audio back to record audio on mpc?

the mpc live and X can record analog audio whilst playing back a sequence. you can record more than one analog track at a time by going into track grid, holding shift and arming the analog track(s) you want to record to.

Mines doing all that but I can't hear nothing out the mpc x earphones but I have it connected to my roland famton x 6 and I can hear sounds out of its earphones bring control by the mpc x so is anything wrong I'm wondering
