I don't think racism requires power and prejudice exclusively. Structural racism does but not every form of racism is displayed through class disparities. Additionally in this circumstance the hotel staff did have power, and used it to stop people from accessing they're business due to their appearance or nationality. End of paragraph

Japanese racism get excused a lot I've noticed. Just because they aren't used to foreigners, doesn't justify it even a little. Imagine if in parts of Finland (or any other extremely white Nordic country) they didn't allow black people in their hotels or restaurants. The world would be in an uproar.

Well in Stockholm, I got filmed with my colleagues while walking to a buffet by a supposedly Ukrainian. We remembered the name slightly wrong, so he followed us from the suburb he lived in to the main street just to check we were going where we were. Once we finished he continued to film us as we went by to get back into the car. I asked why he filmed us? said some "chinese" bet him up (so natural conclusion) all asians are suspicious. the moment i said im from NZ he said " u are a good guy." My colleagues gave up, knowing the result is just meaningless. Just happens there was a police car roaming the suburb he went up to them (i dont know what he said but u can imagine). The police car leaves and he goes back onto his iphone 13 to continue filming us leave. So I would say Im quite unlucky but also no shiny uproar. You just take it... this is such a virtue signal, european countries had taken such different stances when it came to the Syrian are treated vs the Ukrainians. its insane and despite the "uproar" did it happen any other way?

The bus driver I had in the outskirts of Sapporo made me wait at this isolated bus stop in the snow. I tried boarding early and he told me to not board yet. Ok , I’ll stand in the elements even though the bus doors were open. When I get to my stop I go up to pay. I put the coins in the machine. Suddenly he starts yelling and yelling. Was fucking livid at me. I had no idea what he was saying. I was just a tourist that couldn’t speak Japanese at the time. While I was copping abuse a line of people were waiting to get off the bus. One kind man took out his wallet and gave me 10 En. He told me I had paid the bus driver 10 en over what I was supposed to pay. I’m not American, I don’t tip but I made a mistake. But maybe he thought I was and by doing that insulting him. I just wanted to get off I don’t care about 10en. But I just said thank you very much to the other commuter and took his 10en and left. It was very embarrassing. Being yelled at and treated that way without knowing what’s going on infront of all these people. The other passengers were very uncomfortable with the whole situation too. Kutabare bus driver. And thank you random kind guy.

I did the exact walk the dude you met did, back in 2015. only I skipped hokkaido due to time constraints with my visa so I started at tappimizaki (near Aomori) and walked south to kagoshima. even had a now dead blog about the travel called "Ahou no Tabi"

Wakkanai is the most unfriendly place I've been in Japan. Restaurants were turning away Japanese tourists too. My friend and I went to one place at like 8:10pm and they said "we close at 9pm", I asked, in Japanese, if we ordered quickly would it be ok and they begrudgingly accepted that. I ordered a fairly basic soup and they grumpily said I couldn't have it. It was just so strange, if they'd said "last order was at 8" it would have been fine. The hostel I stayed in was lovely though, very nice staff. But the general atmosphere around the town was pretty cold and unwelcoming. Hokkaido in general was fantastic, I traveled all over, loved it! I highly recommend the Heso Matsuri (belly-button festival) in Furano. Wakkanai was the only downside.

I love watching the cycling stuff you guys have been doing of late. However, I recommend that if you are going to continue doing them you take an afternoon and learn how to fit a bike to your body. Most people ignore bike fit and, as stupid as it sounds, millimeters of movement are sometimes enough to go from aching knees and a screaming back to a perfectly happy ride. Even on rented bikes you should be able to make those little changes for comfort. Unless the point is to be uncomfortable as a challenge. Then, by all means, carry on!

It's universally bad behavior to reject people under no other basis than the fact that they are different. Doesn't matter the country. Just because something is a norm, doesn't mean its right. That's like saying Saudi Arabia's treatment of women is completely justified simply because its a different country and the norm over there. Common human ethics exist and get called out when they are broken

Another thing that the comments are doing is removing the word "uncomfortable" and only focusing on calling them shy, with the implication of what Chris actually said (to me at least) being that it was a stance coming from ignorance. That is not to say that ignorance doesn't fuel racism, but it is important to understand where people are coming from, and (at least to me) racism carries the implication of there being some sort of malice or superiority to prove when it is used on its own. To use your own example, if somebody was refusing entry to a Saudi Arabian because they thought they would harm the environment because of their views coming from the societal norms of their own country, is that wrong? The answer is that we don't know, they might have harmed the environment of the establishment or they might be a very kind man who can exist with others peacefully. However, regardless of the outcome, the owner shouldn't be getting called absolutely racist by people who's only information is "a Saudi Arabian was told to leave an establishment", because there might've been a legitimate reason behind it or there might have been an illegitimate reason that had nothing to do with race or there might've been an illegitimate reason that they genuinely thought was legitimate

@@sirebellum0 ok but what if that Saudi Arabian guy had also walked in with two women (same age) wearing hijabs and a large amount of the staff are women and several of them had a negative reaction when they walked in. There is now much more probable cause to believe that he will take issue with the workers and there is now a reason to tell them to leave preemptively. However, that interaction could still be called "a Saudi Arabian was told to leave an establishment" as a summary. To connect this back to the video, there is a real possibility that there was information that we weren't told and that they thought was completely natural and didn't mention (or they just didn't know it in the first place) but that had made those hotel workers much more aggressive.

I would also like to inform you that I have never seen a hijab before in my own family. I am both well aware of the fact that some women choose to wear a hijab by their own volition and that some have identified it as unnecessary in Islam. I would also like to say that I am not the kind of fool who would say that "violent people can be identified by their clothes" or something. Further, I would like to point out that in both my comments I never said or implied that this fictional Saudi Arabian man actually beat either of his wives, the point of the description was to showcase that he is both Middle Eastern and very traditional Muslim. In reality, the person I was responding to is the one who said that the societal norm of Saudi Arabia, and thus the common opinion of the people, is the mistreatment of women. Of course, I agree with you, it is not the women's fault that others feel uncomfortable seeing them, especially so if they do as a showcase of their culture. However, just because nobody should feel guilty about others feeling uncomfortable because of who they are, we should not simply discount the very real discomfort that those people feel, even if it is built on the prejudices they grew up on. I will admit that due to the nature of my comment it appears that I was absolving the workers of their negative views towards Muslims, and for that, I apologize. The thing I had intended to absolve was the act of refusing the group service because of the people's discomfort itself, not the discomfort on its own. To connect this point to the argument I was trying to make, it is not that prejudice and discrimination are ok, but that to decide on your own that something is most definitely racist, especially when it is built on "Japan has a lot of xenophobia", is beyond foolish and to presume you know enough to say to say such a thing so definitively is the strongest evidence that you do not
